My ‘12 tundra gets 9mpg towing. Most trucks same. I trust Toyotas turbo 6 cyl over the ford ecoboost any day. Those motors have known problems. I looked into the new tundra I force hybrid but it gets only a small increase in mpg. Ford still has the 5.0L V8 and it pulls hard with the towing gear option. Toyota Air ride is good when you tow or haul. 👍

I run a 2013 Ford FX2 F150 with the 5.0 V8 towing a Skeeter ZX200. About 17 mpg with nothing behind it. Add the ZX200 behind it and it goes to 9.0 mpg. It has 205k miles on the clock; paid for, and as soon as the auto industry corrects I’ll be going truck shopping. As anyone does, I’ll be looking for something they gets better fuel mileage across the board. I may go by and look at Tundra’s just because of the extras available on them but will probably wind up in a 3/4 ton gas truck with the gearing for towing.
I have a 2022 Platinum Silver 4WD. I learned to get true gas mileage you have rest the mileage button. I do when I am driving highway vs in city. I have gotten 22 mpg from OKC to Dallas at 80 mph. I get mostly 15mpg in city. I use ECO in the city/ hwy or the Comfort mode on the highway. I haven't towed anything yet. I do have a rolling bed cover for my 5.5 bed. Clarence
Go back to Normal mode mate. You'll get better MPG. I'm actually surprised you got such a good MPG out of a 4x4. I got 23.4 MPG doing 85 MPH through NM and AZ on I-10 in my Limited 4x2. Normal is 24.7 MPG at 72 mph, 23.2 here in Hawai'i now.
Huge Toyota fan, but average 10 mpg with our 07/08 Tundra with the 5.7 towing a 06 Z21 Ranger. One reason why we’re deciding to go diesel and not new tundra is cause there isn’t really a difference in tow mpg for that 70k price tag.
@@vskplmr Eh, I get it, its only about $1 more but for diesel but the difference in MPG is worth it to us. From Lake Havasu in Arizona to Bakersfield CA, our 07/08 Tundra averaged 8.4 MPG with the Z21 Behind it (I would expect the new tundra to do this too). I would assume that a 3/4 Ton truck wouldve averaged somewhere 11/12 MPG.
I got my 2023 1794 two weeks ago. I am averaging around 13 mpg combined with very light-footed driving. Hopefully this will improve over time. The trucks is amazing but the MPG is not what Toyota advertises.
@@williewang6493 make sure you hit the reset button when you fill up your tank. I have 2023 sequoia and i get 18-19mpg from pearland to dallas. 80-90mph speed
It'll get a little better as engine breaks in and less friction occurs, but any turbo engine is thirsty for fuel. Without the turbos working this engine feels like a small 3.4 liter v6 in a 3 ton truck.. I'll be keeping my 2014 supercharged and get better mileage and having more fun! Newer is not better anymore, EVERYTHING is getting made cheaper even Toyota parts. Not much made in Japan anymore.
Not a mechanic but I opened the air box took the mesh/wool looking material off the top went from 12-13 to 20mpg can't see that it would void anything, seems overdone to have double catch in the airbox anyway good luck
You got to factor in the camper shell that knocks your fuel economy to 2-3 mpg . Ppl who can afford $70K trucks have no issue with fuel cost. I trust TOYOTA reliability over THE BIG 3.
I agree with that, my question is why did Toyota go to a V6 turbo and if it wasn't going to get better mpg than the V8? Just driving the Nissan Titan gets 20mpg on the highway and around 15-17 in town, and that is with the 5.6L V8 so that is what I am deciding between
Chris how does it compare with your old tundra while towing. I would like to get a hybrid but my mileage on my 19 tundra(3rd also) is 11ish at 75 mph with a 20’ Triton . Thanks for responding if you can.
Been looking at Toyotas as my next truck and what I'm getting mid way through your video is it's kinda a roll of the dice if your getting one that grenades it's engine and gets recalled or it's going to be a great truck
I appreciate the v8 diehards. I have both a 2003 4.7L v8 SR5 sport with 240,000 miles. I recently bought a 22 1794 Edition. Love it. For those that want a v8, eventually the v8s across all manufacturers will go away due to the EPA emissions continuing to tighten over the next few years. It’s not for fuel economy, simply tailpipe exhaust gas limits. For those that have v8s keep them. Their value will only increase over the next few years. Eventually, the next generation of buyers will never have driven a v8 or possibly even a v6, making it even easier for manufacturers to sell smaller displacement power train vehicles.
The Gov't is making manufacturers do this..all manufacturers would rather keep their v8's...BUT, our "wonderful" govt. is pushing the EV's & better mpg out of bigger vehicles
V-8 could do better with gas mileage. So what was the reason for changing from V-8 to V-6 ? Wasn't so difficult improve transmition and add hybrid to V-8 models ?
I bought one of the last 2021 tundra made November 2021 v8 limited silver. I did add a trans cooler to protect my trans I am scared of turbo Mx costs on the new generation and since I got mine to tow I felt it might be safer to stay with A proven reliable truck vs a newer version that was still working out issues
I couldn't help but notice that you're getting 13.5 MPG. Wasn't the hybrid supposed to do a lot better than that? I have a 2020 Sequoia with the 5.7L and it gets 14.5 in the city.
So many complainers and haters. You came here to argue fuel economy 😂 If you want good fuel milage then go get a Prius. Also, the new Tundra is amazing, so aren’t the older ones.
Hate to break it to new 2023 Tundra owners. But, turbo charged engines do NOT last for the same sort of extended mileage without service as a normally aspirated engine. Higher cylinder pressures and more power per unit volume means lower engine life. Only time will tell how long these drive trains will last under normal usage.
Great review. But it’s the 3rd Gen not 5th, and your infotainment screen is 14” not 13.1… I know what you meant, but newcomers don’t. I have a 22 limited with TRD package
I had a 2010 and then bought a 2015 Tundra 3 years ago and it's by far the best truck I've ever owned. I really like the looks and technology of the new ones but the fuel economy is terrible compared to other brands. I get 12.8 around town in my 2015 with a lift and 35s so as much as I like the new Tundras, I doubt I'll buy one. If I want better MPGs, I'll keep my Tundra and buy a Tacoma for my DD. Go to toyota ,if the truck has issues as you say then they will fix it for free and in no time, one of the best things about toyota is they take care of their customers and own to their mistakes.
@Johar Kn so I should just expect issues with a top tier truck? I've never had issues with any vehicle in the past. QC should be better on the assembly line.

The 1794 trim is my favorite trim, but I still do not like how the new Tundra looks. I would prefer the previous gen anytime and/or if I have to buy a brand new truck, the GMC/Chevy 1500 twins with the 3.0L diesel engine - that is the best 1/2 ton truck(s) today (although RAM 1500 is an amazing truck as well.
Never used to be the case but the interior and ride of the Ram is untouchable. Wish they’d use an inline 6 diesel in their half ton. Otherwise that GM baby dmax is hard to beat.
@@cummins4408 The RAM 1500 is a very solid truck. If I am not wrong, it is currently the most reliable 1/2 ton truck according to Consumer Report. No V8 (or even a small V8), No Tow Hooks, No Steel Bed *Plastic Bed (Yes, "Composite" is a fancy term for plastic) No rear Bumper step... All the quality control complaints, wind noise, loose vents, rattling center armrest, window seals not sealing, failing Turbos, plastic base on driver's seats cracking, thin foam in driver's seat. *These complaints are well documented on TH-cam videos (KERevs, Trigger Happy, 251 REELING, TRD Jon just to name a few). Those Turbos won't last as long as a naturally aspirated motor.. Finally, the ridiculous MSRP and dealer mark ups. I clearly understand there are some issues with a New Gen but this is ridiculous. Toyota has ruined the Tundra name. *Keeping my 2nd gen *Thanks for the review.
Agree 100%. Hope my 2020 crewmax lasts forever. Toyota ruined the Tundra and it is mind boggling to understand what they were thinking, almost as if on purpose. The new truck is a joke.
Nice review and obviously there are Toyota Bonus and bucks, I don't have anything against Tundra I have had one before, the Ford Tremor I have IMO has a little more benefit in terms of tow etc. ,They are all roughly the same now, Ford has a great deal of HP and torque as well. I guess whatever you choose in turbo motors make sure you SERVICE then as needed don't procrastinate.! They all are not friendly towing in MPG.
And I disagree do not need v8! This engine will do just as fine! More power, double the gas milage…. I have a trailer 8k lb and it was superb Accross us and East coast
Do the following items bother you? Maybe I am more discriminating: 1) No decent truck box access solution (no in tailgate step assist) 2) 'Hump' in the center of the rear passenger floor. F150 and Ram are completely 'flat.' Flat floors allow for more stable storage of longer items without a teeter-totter rocking issue. 3) Poor Door/Window Seals - I read a LOT of complaints about wind noise squealing into the cockpit because of poorly designed weather stripping. 4) Lackluster fuel economy - Ford turbos provide much better mpg 5) Poor fit and finish and hardware - Read a lot about poor fit and finish..... cheap side seat plastic panels breaking, etc. 6) Ridiculous feature where the vehicle shuts off when you open the door after remotely starting it. I am not a 'hater'..... I did own a new Highlander Limited in 2014 and hated the fact that the vehicle would shut off when opening the door after a remote start - what a stupid thing to do. You don't remote start a vehicle with the thought of entering it and having to restart it)
I just came from an F-150 3.5l ecoboost to the new tundra, and the ford did not get any better mpg. The quality of the tundra is also much better than the ford. Mine is a 23', and I think Toyota has worked out the new-gen issues with rattles, etc. I also have a bed step, so no issues getting in an out. I couldn't care less about rear hump.
@@user-mh5qg5jb7d Most serious truck owners care about the things I listed..... also, rear seat legroom is not as big as its competitors.... and headroom in the rear seat is horrible. I am 5/11 1/2" tall, and my hair hits the rear headliner on the outboard sides...and, with a sunroof, I literally have to turn my head sideways and smashed against the headliner in the 'center' rear seat position. Combine that with your knees halfway up to your chest because of the dopey rear passenger floor hump, and it is one uncomfortable place to be. Do you like how the remote started vehicle shuts off when you open the door? WTH is with that? My Highlander did that and I hated it. That side bumper step is so funny.... looks like a complete afterthought.... did they buy that from Home Depot and bolt it on? Hard pass on this Tundra for me...and I HAVE owned a Toyota in the past....so, am certainly not 'anti-Toyota'..... or I would have never checked one out for fun. Just curious, how can you say the 'quality is much better on the Tundra than the Ford?' The tundra has lots of online complaints about window frame wind leaks, rattles all over the dash and door panels, and breaking cheap plastic seat side trim pieces... not to mention some mechanical issues when first released - not sure if those were adequately addressed or not, but, not sure that quality fit and finish is something that can be attributed to the new Tundra based upon many, many user reviews. But good luck with yours!
A bit disappointed in the fuel mileage. My 2018 F-150, 3.5 Eco boost gets 20 mpg when not towing and 13 when towing. Probably need to remove the Toyota from my list of next trucks.
Your fuel mileage is no better or worst than the 5.7 V8. I would not buy one because of the V6 Turbo. I will just keep my old Tundra with the V8. That V6 turbo will not last 400,000 miles as the 5.7 V8 do. You will have trouble and spend big money on those turbos after the 100,000 mile mark. Turbo V6 not for me.
So Get the same MPG as 19 and 21 TRD PRO and 19 has been made into overland type vehicle. I test Drove a 22 TRD PRO. It felt so cheap and for money they want its insane. No way those are gonna last 400K miles. The Cummins turbo 6s dont even do that most of time and that is a much better engine. After I pay off 21... gonna get like a 2026 GMC 2500 AT4X. Toyota had a chance to crush it. It has such a long front end, looks like a giant clown shoe.
I'll pass. I'll keep my 2020 1794 tundra. 14in screen is redundant. Pano is OK but regular sunroof is nice in mine. Been in the new tundras the jbl sound system is still ass. If I had to buy another truck, I'd probably get a diesel with these prices of tundras.

My V6 Silverado gets 13 towing and 21 without. It’s a 2015 with 236k on it lol boat/trailer come in at 3,236lbs.
Is diesel price itself not good reason?
@@vskplmr Eh, I get it, its only about $1 more but for diesel but the difference in MPG is worth it to us. From Lake Havasu in Arizona to Bakersfield CA, our 07/08 Tundra averaged 8.4 MPG with the Z21 Behind it (I would expect the new tundra to do this too). I would assume that a 3/4 Ton truck wouldve averaged somewhere 11/12 MPG.
Great looking truck Chris. Love the new Tundra's.
I love my 23 1794! Coming from a 20 Trd Pro it’s a HUGE upgrade!

I got my 2023 1794 two weeks ago. I am averaging around 13 mpg combined with very light-footed driving. Hopefully this will improve over time. The trucks is amazing but the MPG is not what Toyota advertises.
Same. Love my truck though!
My 2023 1794 is around 10mpg. I drive very gentle. Hope this will getting better after 5000miles.

Not bashing the the new tundra but I think it's funny as hell that your getting the same mpg as my 2020 Magnuson supercharged 5.7
Did you have any issues with the recall on your engine?
I love the looks of that Tundra! But my 2017 5.7L 381 hp V8 Tundra gets 13.5mpg towing my 19’ Airstream about 4,009+ lbs.
Just driving the Nissan Titan gets 20mpg on the highway and around 15-17 in town, and that is with the 5.6L V8 so that is what I am deciding between
😂 A topper killing mpg by 2-3?
@@bcw686 Why did Ford go to a V6 if it wasn't going to get better mpg than the V8? Although they still offer a V8.
Thanks for the information
I’m still driving my first Tundra. 2000 without any problems but I’m considering the 23.
Bro, I'm getting 20-21 mpg in FL panhandle (usually 40-65 mph on small highways). Great review though! Nice dog.
Can I ask for a status report on how it's going? How many miles so far? Any major issues?
I pull with a duramax diesel game changer after coming from a 1/2 ton. Don’t know boat is behind you and 18mpg or so. To each is own , all preference
So they stopped putting the 5.7 in the Tundra because people complained about the MPG but you with the 3.5 turbo you get worse then I get with the 5.7
The Gov't is making manufacturers do this..all manufacturers would rather keep their v8's...BUT, our "wonderful" govt. is pushing the EV's & better mpg out of bigger vehicles
V-8 could do better with gas mileage. So what was the reason for changing from V-8 to V-6 ? Wasn't so difficult improve transmition and add hybrid to V-8 models ?
I would've thought your boat with trailer to be heavier than 2,400 lbs
Nice video man and good luck on your BASS Elite tour 💪💯
all tundra have the air bag for towing or just the higher trim
I bought one of the last 2021 tundra made November 2021 v8 limited silver. I did add a trans cooler to protect my trans
I am scared of turbo Mx costs on the new generation and since I got mine to tow I felt it might be safer to stay with
A proven reliable truck vs a newer version that was still working out issues
I couldn't help but notice that you're getting 13.5 MPG. Wasn't the hybrid supposed to do a lot better than that? I have a 2020 Sequoia with the 5.7L and it gets 14.5 in the city.
Great video. Thank You! I have a 22 trd 4x4. What tires did you put yours? Looking to go more aggressive on the next round of tires.
I have to agree with everything. I’m loving mine so far to.
Did spark plug change yet?
So many complainers and haters. You came here to argue fuel economy 😂 If you want good fuel milage then go get a Prius.
Also, the new Tundra is amazing, so aren’t the older ones.
Wait those are all black 1794 wheels?
2015 f150 w a 5.0L V8 gets around 20 mpg at 70 mph on the highway without towing around 13 mpg at the same speed towing a bass boat
Who cares? All makes are ditching naturally aspirated v8's for smaller turbos. And who really wants to drive a 10+ year old truck!
Can we get a new update tundra video?
You ever go to hedgewaters in Florida?
Following up on this older video, how’s your truck holding up? Lots of horror stories on the Internet. Thank you.
I just want to know where you got the 13 fishing hat. Not on their website and it’s SICK!
Great review. But it’s the 3rd Gen not 5th, and your infotainment screen is 14” not 13.1… I know what you meant, but newcomers don’t. I have a 22 limited with TRD package
So I can’t get a v8 but I’m goin to get crap mpg anyway?
I had a 2010 and then bought a 2015 Tundra 3 years ago and it's by far the best truck I've ever owned. I really like the looks and technology of the new ones but the fuel economy is terrible compared to other brands. I get 12.8 around town in my 2015 with a lift and 35s so as much as I like the new Tundras, I doubt I'll buy one. If I want better MPGs, I'll keep my Tundra and buy a Tacoma for my DD. Thanks for sharing, really helped me decide.
If you’re lifted w/larger tires, consider a bump in your rear gear. It’ll help acceleration and you might get back some mileage.
@@georgiafan6618 This is good, it's got all kinds of power. I've built several Land Cruisers over the years and they wouldn't fall out of a tree unless you put 4.88s in with 35" tires. @@cherokeelaketennessee7895 That’s pretty good mileage. I went to 4.88’s and swapped in an auburn posi. My towing is strong on stock 20” wheels. Lost only 200 rpm at 70-75, reach 17mpg hwy. City is 13
@@georgiafan6618 I use to average 13.8 with stock tires and no lift, now it's 12.7. The best I can do on the hwy is 15.8 and that's really taking it easy. Thank you Chris for your honest opinion. I was wondering what you as B.A.S.S. professionals thought of the truck. The towing and V6 were my biggest concern. I have a 22 Tundra Capstone and at 12k miles I have several rattles and squeaks. Just seems like it's out together with cheap plastic. The MPG is terrible without stock size tires. The infotainment system constantly has issues. This is my first and last Toyota Tundra.
@@copelandcook7273 No, not really ,your case is the exception as most run these trucks for over 15 years with minimal maintenance schedule and face no issues .
I have Hilux 2012 model and still runs like they day I got it while getting only battery issue which Toyota changed and gave me extended warranty for.
what I'm saying is that you might got a bad one where mistakes might be from dealership or factory, in such case you should go to Toyota and complain as you paid a good amount , and unlike most manufacturers Toyota will actually listen without question and fix your truck completely as they should .
Beautiful truck BUT….that mpg sucks. I own a ‘17 Denali Duramax and get 20-25 mpg not towing and 17-22 towing boats or utv’s. 🤷🏻♂️

All American trucks are really light years ahead than the Tundra, and since they all are not cheap, I still think that the GMC/Chevy 1500 with the 3.0L diesel is the best money wise too.
Damn you have more miles on your 2022 than I have on my 2016 Tacoma . Looked at a 2022 1794 at Holman Toyota the thing was listed $74,000 and that was no markup

U know that truck will last 400,000 miles?
Do the following items bother you? Maybe I am more discriminating:
1) No decent truck box access solution (no in tailgate step assist)
2) 'Hump' in the center of the rear passenger floor. F150 and Ram are completely 'flat.' Flat floors allow for more stable storage of longer items without a teeter-totter rocking issue.
3) Poor Door/Window Seals - I read a LOT of complaints about wind noise squealing into the cockpit because of poorly designed weather stripping.
4) Lackluster fuel economy - Ford turbos provide much better mpg
5) Poor fit and finish and hardware - Read a lot about poor fit and finish..... cheap side seat plastic panels breaking, etc.
My v8 Tundra on 35s has the same fuel economy.
I get 18 city 24 hwy in my trd pro hybrid
I'm not wild about the exterior styling or the poor fuel economy from a boosted v6.
Gas mileage is pretty bad. My 3/4 ton (6.4 gas) Ram gets 17-18 with 1,000 lbs in the bed.
tow + is for 6000lbs or more towing
A bit disappointed in the fuel mileage. My 2018 F-150, 3.5 Eco boost gets 20 mpg when not towing and 13 when towing. Probably need to remove the Toyota from my list of next trucks.
Was gonna say, my boat/trailer is at 3236 dry so about 3500 loaded. I get 13 towing and 21 without out of my 2015 v6 Silverado.
I get better mileage than in my 2013 ram 5.7 liter hemi. I wish Toyota would have kept the v8’s.
Blame the govt...destroying all manufacturers
The MPG is pretty disappointing considering it’s a v6.
9.2 Bro... like god that's terrible. I got 15.3 MPG towing 5400 lbs (trailer + Corolla). 9.2 is atrocious.
I'd Love to see that Truck get another 400K miles on it being a Turbo???
Yeah he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about
I'll pass. I'll keep my 2020 1794 tundra. 14in screen is redundant. Pano is OK but regular sunroof is nice in mine. Been in the new tundras the jbl sound system is still ass. If I had to buy another truck, I'd probably get a diesel with these prices of tundras.
I think Toyota has had a rash of bad batteries, I’ve had two bad ones in my 2022 Tacoma
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know a v6 will get worse towing mpg than a v8, regardless if it's a turbo
That MPG is absolutely garbage for a new truck especially towing a only a bass boat. The truck itself is nice but no way I could live with that especially if driving across the country was my job.
V6 Tundra? Are you stranded? Need a tow? Let me know, I got a V8 SR5 TSS Offroad.
V6 with turbo? I doubt it'll reach 400k miles...
So economy didn’t increase a bit towing from the previous gen V8. Those numbers match the 14 Tundra Platinum I had with 220K plus miles on it. So glad I switched to a F150 PowerBoost!
I thought the v6 was supposed to get better mileage? My 5.7 gets better towing.
