    As for the care of the real horses, Viggo Mortensen is quite a horse lover & took time out of his schedule during filming to care for them. He even bought one of them & kept it until it died a few years back.

      And a lot of the extras on horseback are people from all over New Zealand that answered a casting call for people plus their horse. Some even brought their own costumes/ weapons to use as props, too. So I'd guess that those horses were in the best hands - their owners. Most of the riders of Rohirrim are women they slapped beards on, apparently the majority of people who came to participate with their horse were women.

      He bought 2 horses. One of the extras did a lot of horsework but she couldn't afford to buy her horse at the end of filming. She was trying to get some money together when she heard that the horse had been sold, and she was devastated. Wouldn't you know it, Viggo knew about her dilemma and purchased the horse and gifted it to her.

    One of the more understated effects is the unnatural way the Ring just drops to the ground without so much as a bounce (Compare to the moment Bilbo found it*).
    Little things like this do a good job of showing how unsettling it is... and it was managed with simple magnets.
    * The difference is that the Ring wanted to leave its current wielder, with Bilbo being an unexpected obstacle.
    When Bilbo left, however, the Ring did not want to part paths. The willpower it took Bilbo to drop it cannot be understated.

      I think what he meant with not being green was mix of couple of things he might have heard.
      First: They planted Shire's vegetation a lot (year or two?) before shooting, so it would look like the city has always been there.
      Second: They used color correction In the film to make it look all magical and oversaturated. Like a fairytale.

    Like most who have never seen this trilogy:
    “It’s 3 1/2 hours long!”
    Most everyone at the end of this movie:
    “Wait!? It ends here?” (When they still haven’t realized that the 3 1/2 hours is already up).

    • @Muck006
      @Muck006 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The difference to other trilogies is that it is a continuous story from a book, whereas Star Wars for example was rewritten during filming, which makes it inherently weaker and also inconsistent (because the whole "Luke and Leia are brother and sister" thing was added later).
      This is one of the most important things to fix in Hollywood ... and with people like Rian Johnson "first draft" is even enough.

    The reason why Frodo almost became a wraith is because he was struck by a Morghul blade. A really rare evil artefact. It not only hurts your body but poisens your soul. Untreated, even a graze is fatal.

      And to add a little bit: In his wound got lodged a piece of the weapon which Aragorn didn't find and get out. That shard started to travel towards the heart (because of enchanment or something?). That shard being in him was the reason why Frodo was turning as wraith. In Rivendell they finally found and extracted the shard at the last moment possible.

    One of the main reasons that the fellowship don’t go on their journey on horseback, is because their journey to attempt to destroy the ring is intended to be a secret journey, out of the eyes of the servants of Sauron, Orcs, Nazgul, Saruman etc. The same reason that they don’t rely on or involve the great eagles every time they get into some strife. Horses and eagles play big parts in the overall story, but at least in the early/initial parts of the journey, the horses aren’t involved because the fellowship are trying to go under the radar.

      Terrain also plays a big part here - horses are only much faster than humans if they can run (which they also can't do for hours on end). Ponies and donkeys are much better suited for rocky terrain (though there are some horse breeds that are good climbers, such as the Haflinger). Horses that work a lot usually need some kind of supplementary food, like oats, to sustain their energy.

    Missing back story:
    During the time that Bilbo possessed the ring, Sauron did not know that the ring had been found and was able to be located in the shire. Bilbo's use of it went unnoticed. Bilbo used to enjoy long walks and was in the habit of using the ring to disappear if an unwanted person was about to cross his path. Merry happened to witness one such disappearance and observed when he reappeared that Bilbo put something shiny into his pocket. From Merry, Pippen and Sam learned about the ring. From the time that Bilbo gave Frodo the ring to the time that Gandalf told him about the nature of the ring was several years. The 3 friends knew that Frodo might be leaving sometime and conspired to join with him. Sam was the spy because he gardened for Mr. Frodo. Once Gandalf caught Sam listening, Sam wouldn’t share anymore news with Pippen and Merry but enough was known for them to be prepared. They were determined not to let Frodo journey alone.
    I wish that the movies didn’t cut so much of the relationship building.

    Answers for some of your (rhetorical questions :) )
    1. Sauron is a Maiar, just as Gandalf and Saruman are (and the Balrogs as well). Maiars are sth like Demigods. Gandalf and Saruman also are Istari, which are Maiar, who were sent to Middle earth to help the people withstand the evil.
    2. The nine are the ringwraiths or Nazgul - they are the men, who got the 9 Rings and were corupted by the one ring
    3. the 3 Elven rings were not corupted by the one ring and all of them have an appearance in the movie(s); the 7 dwarf rings are lost, presumably Sauron has them

    1. Good catch that Saruman is motivated by fear. Probably the biggest theme in these films is hope vs despair. We see how each character deals with the existential threat posed by Sauron. This will be shown even more in the third film with Theoden and Denethor (no spoilers!) Something I wish I had understood when I first saw the film is how improbable, almost hopeless, the quest to destroy the ring is. Note also that since Isildur’s death, humanity is divided into several factions. These groups are not necessarily friends, or (in the case of elves and dwarves) even allies. The fellowship is them coming together as one last gasp of desperation.
    2. Interestingly, the big reason Bilbo and Frodo can carry the ring and Gandalf can’t is that they’re NOT special or powerful. If the Ring takes over Frodo’s mind he’ll turn into (at worst) another Gollum. If the Ring takes over Gandalf’s mind he could turn into another Sauron.
    3. When Boromir reached for the ring and you called “SECURITY” I absolutely lost it XD XD

      Interestingly, in the Books Saruman is revealed to be motivated entirely by Power, and to supplant Sauron himself when it’s revealed he has been searching the Anduin for Isildurs remains before Sauron has even begun rebuilding his fortress of Barad Dur. @@VeggieGamer yes, amazing radio adaptation - much more faithful to the book of course as they were able to focus more on so many dialogues from the book, which Jackson's movie was not able to add, becouse they have to focus more on visuals like battles and such. The radio play was created by Brian Sibley who himself is known in Tolkien fandom as one of us :) and who had written some of the books about P. Jackson's movies (films albums). The cast of this play was huge about 50 voice actors. Their choices of adaptation were IMO pristine. And Ian Holm's role is smt on another level :) Though its very different from E. Wood's interpretation of the role. Probably becouse Holm at this time was 40 years old so his age was more similar to 50 year old book Frodo, while Wood was 18 when he started his work for Jackson's movie. It was 13 episodes made in 1981 though after the premiere of LOTR : TTT BBC recorded new prologues and epilogues to this masterpiece which were read by I. Holm.
      So its funny that Ian Holm was probably the only actor ever who'd played both Bagginses and even played them twice :) As he played Frodo in BBC adaptation in 1981 and reprised his role for these new prologues and epilogues in 2002, and then he played Bilbo in Jackson's LOTR in 2001 and then reprised this role in 2011 in "the hobbit" trilogy. Sadly I got only the older version of the radio play without those new additions. :)

When Peter Jackson's first movie, "The Fellowship of the Ring" was released I jumped at the chance to see it. Remember we had to wait a year for the next one after each part! I love watching these reactions and enjoy reliving these experiences each time I view (or re-read them). Such is the power of imagery and writing that arose from the gift that Professor Tolkien gave us and the genius of Peter Jackson et al. (with Howard Shore's brilliant score) in bringing this inspiring epic to film in a way no one, especially J.R.R. thought was possible. Lovely reaction BTW. One major area where the movies depart from Tolkien's book is in the treatment of Aragorn and Arwen. In the book, Arwen is hardly mentioned except at the very end of the story. (Fun fact: the only dialogue Arwen has with another character in the book is with Frodo!) Tolkien was never able to fit the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen into the main story in a way that satisfied him, so he relegated it to one of the extensive Appendices in the last volume of the book. It's a beautiful story and definitely worth reading, but it exists outside the main narrative.

      But thankfully she was in it, it fit in the movies to progress Aragorn and I don't think they would have done Glorfindel any justice anyway. PLUS, it was done just enough to parallel Beren and Luthien. Especially when Galadriel comes to rescue Gandal parallels to her brother and Beren and clashing with Sauron just like her brother did! and this place is the same the place she destoyed when that area was first taken over by Sauron long before the lord of the rings era even took place, second age i believe.

    The seeing stones are called Palantiri. Relics of an earlier Age, brought out of Numenor just before it sank. 7 came out, most were lost over the centuries. The Lidless Eye in Saruman's shows Sauron controls one, which he can use to communicate with other stones & dominate the will of their users. One of the main means Sauron used to subvert Saruman.

  • @Dheyjin
    @Dheyjin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    the seeing stones have an interesting flaw that the characters aren't aware off, that's a great design choice from Tolkien: they always show you the truth but you're bound to draw the wrong conclusion. That's in part the reason of Sarumans decision to join evil. He saw Sauron gathering strength and concluded he couldn't be beaten.
    This will be a recurring theme throughout the movie

    About those other rings (3, 7, and 9) that came before Sauron forged the One Ring and the races to whom they were given: 1. The fact that elves are potentially immortal is important. They do not "desire power" like men do and I believe that is because they do not have the fear caused by mortality. The relationship between death, fear, power, and corruption is fundamental to the mythology of the LOTR as created by Tolkien. I believe this is connected to Tolkien's religious philosophy. Hobbits, while not immortal, do not seem to live with the fear or hunger for power as men do, and are thus much less corruptible. Hobbits are a remarkable invention of Tolkien, when you think about it, not specifically virtuous like saints but simpler and thus more pure of heart and satisfied with the years of life they have; and thus they have a certain courage and strength to them despite being mostly unlearned. I don't know about the dwarves; maybe someone else will elucidate. 2. When Gandalf realized Bilbo had found a ring, he didn't think it possible he had found THE ring; just possibly one of the lost ones or maybe other magical rings were made over the years. But when he returned and saw some of the effects of the ring on Bilbo, he became suspicious and went to research it. When he took it out of the fireplace and handed it to Frodo, he was still hoping/wishing that it wasn't the One Ring - but it was.

    Some notes:
    - The ring wouldn't have the same effect on Bilbo as Gandalf because Gandalf is a wizard with powers
    - all 3 movies were 100% filmed in NZ both sets and real world
    - They built Hobbiton, took it down and then rebuilt it for The Hobbit but decided to make it a permanent thing for people to visit.
    - Not sure what you meant by 'they made it green with computers' in the original they did add a green hue but that has since been removed when the 4K editions were released. They didn't have to CG any green in, it was just a bit of a colour filter. The grass was real.
    - Unfortunately you'll have to get used to the feet haha but the soles of hobbit feet are stronger than shoes so yeah they don't need them!
    - Its spelt Elrond (might help with pronunciation)
    - Halflings are not half human and half dwarf lol

    Regarding dwarves being taller than hobbits: this is actually where Gimli’s actor, John Rhys-Davis, came in handy. He’s actually a very tall bloke, standing a head above the actors who played the hobbits, meaning the filming crew didn’t need to pull any special tricks to simulate the height difference between Gimli and the hobbits as they did for all of them and the “tall folk.” Who knows, perhaps that’s one of the reasons he was cast.

    "I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." It's awkwardly worded, but it's actually a compliment. In other words, some of you deserve to be liked by me, more than I have liked you. Or, I haven't been as good a friend to you as you deserved.
    The number of rings is not arbitrary. There were three "kindreds" of elves, seven clans of dwarves, and nine ancient kingdoms of men.
    Bree (and the area around it) is an independent land inhabited by both men and hobbits. They're used to seeing hobbits around.
    It should be noted that Pippin is not nearly as much of an idiot in the books (though he still is a bit of an idiot). Both he and Merry are essentially teenagers, by Hobbit standards. The scene in the tavern was simplified for the movie. In the book, it was no one's fault but Frodo's that he put on the ring. And it wasn't the cooking fire that brought the nazgul to Weathertop.
    Orcs and goblins are the same thing. "Orc" is simply based on the Elvish word for "goblin". The words can be used interchangeably. However, there are several different "breeds" of orcs. Some are bred for stealth and spying, and others for heavy infantry, and others for command, etc.. And different types live in different areas of Middle Earth. Moria orcs, and Morgul orcs and Lugburz orcs, etc.
    17 years passes between Biblo's birthday party and Frodo leaving the Shire.

    TLDR on the questions you asked-
    .Sauron and Gandalf are both Maiar: Before time began Eru illuvatar (The god of this universe) created immortal spirits called the Ainur. He taught them to sing together and gave them music as guidance, the most powerful of the Ainur (the Valar) then created the world in accordance to his Eru’s design. One of the Valar (Melkor/Morgoth) rebelled, corrupting the music, and became the first dark lord. Morgoth was eventually defeated and his most powerful servant Sauron took his place as dark lord. In a past age 5 Maiar were sent to Middle Earth by the Valar to help people resist Sauron, they took the form of Mortal Men and became the Wizards.
    . Orcs in this universe were originally Elves that were corrupted by Morgoth. Orcs and Goblins are essentially the same thing.
    Goblins are, but not strictly, just a variant of Orc(Uruk)
    “Goblin” is just a sort of synonym, like calling something a “critter”
    . The hobbits are distinctly their own people, but are technically just a sub race of Men.
    . Sauron went to the elves in disguise and taught them how to craft magical rings. The elf that he went to didn’t trust him, so he took the knowledge and creates 3 other rings. When Sauron created the master ring the elves sensed the deception and took them off. The 3 rings were then given to Galadriel, Elrond and Ciridan (who later gave his ring to Gandalf) and went into hiding. These rings were uncorrupted by Sauron as he never learnt their locations. The Dwarven rings corrupted their bearers by amplifying their greedy nature, which eventually attracted gold coveting dragons. Some of those rings were consumed by dragons, some made their way back to Sauron.

    The seven rings of the Dwarves were all either lost, consumed by dragons or recovered by Sauron. The three rings of the Elves were made by them and were not corrupted by Sauron. They still exist and wield a different power. Elrond the half-Elven has one and he uses it to protect and preserve his realm. The lady Galadriel has another and uses it in a similar manner. The third ring, Narya, the ring of fire, is worn in secret by Gandalf. It aids him in his ability to inspire hope in others and gives him a command over fire.

    Once you finish the Harry Potter audiobooks, you should definitely check out the Lord of Rings ones. I really enjoy listening to your thoughts chapter by chapter, rather than the book as a whole. I’ve actually just finished relistening to all the Harry Potter books and have now started on the Hobbit, narrated by Rob Inglis. I am really enjoying his narration. I was instantly hooked!
    Thanks again, Veggie! Can’t wait to see part 2!

    They don't really go into the backstory of the Rings in the movie but basically long story short:
    Sauron is an ancient angelic spirit (a Maiar) who loved craftsmanship, excellence, order, and perfection. He was corrupted by the first Dark Lord Morgoth.
    During the Second Age (approx. 6000 years before LOTR) Sauron hid in Middle Earth after Morgoth was defeated. At first he desired perfection again (but also control) so he came up with a master plan over the next 1000 or so years to forge rings with the Elves that would benefit the Elves while also making the Elves loyal to Sauron. Disguised as "The Lord of Gifts", he teaches them his knowledge of ringmaking and then retreats to make his master Ring, at which time the Elves make the 3 Elven rings on their own. Unfortunately for Sauron, as soon as he puts his ring on, the Elves feel his deceit. Sauron declares war on the Elves and reclaims the remaining 16 rings (not including the 3 Elven rings).
    Of the 16 he gives 7 to the Dwarves (who just get greedy for money) and 9 to men. The 9 become great Kings, sorcerers, and warriors of their day, with unending life, but eventually fall into becoming the 9 ring wraiths.

    Finally we get to see this! I loved your HP reactions but these are my favourite movies and Tolkien is just another level of fantasy.
    Some fun facts:
    1. The Shire was modelled after Warwickshire, where Tolkien spent some of his childhood.
    2. Gandalf, Sauron and the Balrog are Maiar, the race that was the helpers of the gods. The gods are called Valar.
    3. There are High-Elves, who went on the journey to the Undying Lands before sun and moon, and the 'Low-Elves' who did not. Wood-Elves are mostly of the second group, while in Rivendell there are mostly High-Elves.
    4. Saruman and Sauron having similar names is a coincidence. Sauron is a name in High Elvish. Saruman is a name in the language of Men, modelled after Old Norse. His Elvish name is Curunir.
    5. Tolkien loved giving his invented words fake history. He said that Hobbit is the modern English version of Old English Holbytla, which means cave-builder. Brandy-wine is the Hobbits' simple way of saying Baranduin, the Elvish name of the river that runs through the Shire.

      The High Elves glow because they have seen the light of the two trees in the Undying lands which is a flaw with Arwen glowing (the original character to take Frodo to Elrond's was Glorfindel who had seen that light - but I understand why they used Arwen to flesh out her character instead of dropping her in at the end) Arwen and Elrond and Legolas have never been to the Undying Lands so they would not glow. Galadriel and Celeborn had also lived in the Undying Lands and thus glowed

      Actualy according to Tolkien's letters hobbits are a branch of humans. Two branches of mortal humanity. Thats why they were called Big People and Little People. Elves and dwarves are different species.

    Fun fact, in addition to playing Bilbo in the movies, Ian Holm also played Frodo in the BBC radio drama of the Lord of the Rings (Which is well worth getting if you like audio dramas. It's still one of my favorite adaptations). So it's a little strange to me sometimes during the first act of the movie to hear his voice talking as Bilbo, but in my head he's the voice of Frodo.
    Of course, he absolutely nailed it. Because he's Ian friggin' Holm. He was a genius actor.
    The reason the Fellowship went on foot was because the terrain they were traveling would be exceptionally hostile to horses. Walking on foot might have been slower, but it allowed them to go wherever they had to. The one animal they did take with them, they had to turn loose before entering Moria anyway (Bill the donkey actually survives and makes his way all the way back to Bree, which is where they got him in the first place).
    Sauron is a god (albeit a minor god). He isn't a species of man. He's the same race as Gandalf and Sauruman, just immensely more powerful.
    The ring doesn't make you invincible, but a mortal who holds it doesn't age. The way Gandalf describes it in the book: "He doesn't grow, or obtain more life. He merely.....continues. Until at last every moment is weariness."

    • @darthvegan435
      @darthvegan435 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill is a pony, not a donkey... Also, the Maiar (Sauron, Gandalf, Saruman, etc..) are more equivalent to minor angels than minor gods (Valar are arch angels, and Eru Illuvatar is God)... They probably also avoided horses to be more stealthy since that was the strategy of the 9 walkers (the Fellowship). Otherwise, you look pretty spot on in your statements.. :D

      @seraphinaaizen6278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darthvegan435 Eh, Angels, gods and demi-gods are essentially interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. They're pretty much the same thing, some are just Goddier than the rest.
      And you're correct that Bill was a pony. I even meant to type Pony, but instead I had a donkey shaped brain fart.

    • @darthvegan435
      @darthvegan435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seraphinaaizen6278 I'm sure that Angels, gods, and demi-gods weren't interchangeable to Tolkien though (as he was a devout Catholic), so for a thorough understanding of his works, I think its important to keep the distinction correct...

    Gandalf is from a race of immortal celestial spirits. He along with four others were send down to middle earth in human forms to look after it. They are in a way caretakers of middle earth. Gandalf is ancient at this point and he lived over 2000 years in his mortal form and at least hundred times longer in his spirit form. His stay at middle earth is temporary but keep in mind that because they are immortal - the world temporary means several milénia, maybe more.

    The Wizards of Middle Earth, or Istari, were incarnated Maiar, from the group of spirits who assisted in the creation of the world, so they've been around a long time. Only three are still kicking around at this point in this region of Middle Earth, Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast (who appears in the Hobbit movies). They are powerful, but constrained from either taking charge or confronting Sauron head-to-head. It's pretty obvious that, of the three, Gandalf has "gone native" the most, hanging out with Men, Dwarves, Elves, and Hobbits. You know, the riff-raff 🙂

    • @Makkaru112
      @Makkaru112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Constrained because last time the Maia clashed it destroyed the world and had to be remade TWICE already. This is why Valinor is an anomaly compared to everything else as it used to be part of a wider world that it was connected to that’s now evaporated!!

A fun and VERY helpful thing to do is get a map of Middle Earth (you can find them online, maybe print one out) so you can see where the cities, regions, and landmarks are. Characters travel long distances and split up, taking very different journeys!

    Strider(Aragorn) met Arwen when his mom took Aragorn at a young age from where they lived to Rivendell for safety. So he grew up with the Elves. Arwen is like centuries or even millennium older than Aragorn. Their tale is very similar to a old tale told by Aragorn when he was leading the hobbits to Rivendell in that swamp. My history of it all is a little foggy so please feel free to correct me. But basically from spotty memory there were two branches of men from Isildur's line. One branch stayed in Gondor where their main city was but that branch died out. The other branch lived in a region fairly close to where the hobbits lived called Anor. This area was attacked by the bad guys long ago and Aragorn and his mother escaped it to Rivendell for safety. He and many other people from his old kingdom became Rangers and one of their chief jobs was to protect places like The Shire.

    I've watched so many reaction videos to LotR in the past little while, but I have to say, this is one of my favourites! The reactions are so enthusiastic, and this is one of the few videos that includes Merry's "Well, that rules you out, Pip" line, even though it is so iconic!
    But I'd just like to add that the ringwraiths' horses themselves were not evil; they were stolen from the Rohirrim and _used_ for evil ☹This is what Éomer says in _The Two Towers_ ch. 2 ("The Riders of Rohan"):
    "Some years ago the Lord of the Black Land wished to purchase horses of us at great price, but we refused him, for he puts beasts to evil use. Then he sent plundering Orcs, and they carry off what they can, choosing always the black horses: few of these are now left."
    As for why they didn't just take horses, the four hobbits actually start off on ponies in the books. They make it all the way to Bree on pony-back, but the ringwraiths send all of the horses and ponies scattering in fear - Bill the pony is the only one left in the whole town, so that's what they're stuck with (...until Moria, when they send him back). I think the writers/PJ just decided to condense this sequence by having them travel on foot from the get-go.
    The Fellowship might have been able to take horses from Rivendell to Caradhras, but once over the pass (...if they were even able to get over the pass on horseback), they intended to travel downstream along the Anduin by boat, which is far faster than horseback. Bill may have known his way back home, but those of Rivendell might not (especially since they are not mearas, which is the Rohirrim's special breed of horse).
    (P.S. Calling Peregrin "Pediguin" is giving major "Benedict Cumberbatch not being able to say 'penguin' properly" vibes 🤣 I loved it!)

    One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

    Your freaking out about the hobbits not wearing shoes really made me laugh due to my own history with Lord of the Rings. I grew up reading the books (this film was released when I was a freshman in college, so I didn't grow up with it, though I love it), and the books inspired me as a young child to go barefoot outside whenever it was warm enough for several years. This had the effect of toughening the soles of my feet to the point that I once stepped on a line of carpet nails and was completely unharmed by it!
