  • In this video, Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor, turn a French-style rolling pin with an ornate detail in the center using a lathe.
    SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.
    Host Kevin O’Connor joins Tom Silva in the workshop to learn how to make a French rolling pin on a lathe. A French rolling pin has handles that are fixed in place, whereas American rolling pins have handles that move independently from the roller.
    Time: 2 days (glue needs to sit overnight)
    Cost: $40
    Skill Level: Hard
    Tools:
    Sliding compound miter saw [amzn.to/2SMRQAe]
    Lathe [amzn.to/3hopTsH]
    Bar clamps [amzn.to/3eIc86d]
    Roughing gouge [amzn.to/33CM2vk]
    Pencil [amzn.to/3hs7V8C]
    Calipers [amzn.to/3y96ge9]
    Parting tool [amzn.to/3boXVJH]
    Skew chisel [amzn.to/33JCChD]
    Sandpaper [amzn.to/3uXR0yV]
    Small brushes [amzn.to/3eLZmUC]
    Shopping List:
    Mahogany [thd.co/3y6SWH3]
    Maple [thd.co/3tEp3uk]
    Painter’s tape [amzn.to/3boIYXW]
    Wood glue [amzn.to/3w1ZW69]
    Food safe finish [amzn.to/3bjMhzF]
    Where to find it?
    Tom used a REVO 12|16 110V lathe [amzn.to/3hopTsH], which is manufactured by Laguna Tools [lagunatools.com/]. The tools Tom used to actually turn the rolling pin can be found at any specialty woodworking store.
    To create the custom piece of wood for turning, Tom used leftover pieces of mahogany and maple that he had from other projects, but that lumber can be found at most home centers and woodworking stores. To cut the in-lays and secure it all together, Tom used a Kapex KS120 sliding compound miter saw [bit.ly/2SEU2tm] by Festool [www.festoolusa.com] and some wood glue [amzn.to/3w1ZW69] from Gorilla Glue [www.gorillatough.com].
    To finish the rolling pin, Tom and Kevin applied Odie’s Oil [www.odiesoil.com/].
    The other tools and materials Tom and Kevin used to turn the rolling pin, including the sandpaper and coping saw, can be found at home centers.

    Protect Tommy at ALL COSTS. Man, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a This Old House clip more than this one. Tom Silva is the definition of a Grandpa, the kind who can literally build you anything, let you help out and teach you with patience and care. Thanks, Tommy!

    More or less End-grain glue joint on a long thin item? Isn't that a weak joint?

      @@clausdicovskiy1350 But when there is a lump of dough in the middle and you push down on the ends, that would put quite a bit of bending force on it, don't you think?

      @clausdicovskiy1350 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianbutler1983 yeah I guess, but I can’t imagine it being anywhere near the force required to damage the joint. But maybe I’m wrong. I guess Kevin’s wife will find out! Lol

    Looks nice, but typically end grain glue joints are considered week, but I’m guessing baking isn’t to aggressive.

    • @jasonhogan1614
      @jasonhogan1614 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's end-grain to side grain so not as bad as end grain to end grain. You can also strengthen end grain joints with two applications of wood glue. The first will get sucked up by the grain, the second will create a stronger bond.
