“The perk of being in this industry and being your own boss, it’s not how it used to be where it was like people scrounging on the streets selling their bodies because they had literally no other option.” This is classist bull shit. “Being your own boss” is a function of your class and intergenerational wealth and has nothing to do with sex work per se. There are and always have been plenty of people who are extremely poor and are forced against their will to obey the demands of their boss(es) because they can’t afford to turn down work. And that has nothing to do with sex work, it is true for all kinds of employment. It’s great that the bougie class is now normalizing sex work, but let’s not pretend that normalizing sex work will end worker oppression - ie poverty. The only way to end the oppression of poor workers is to empower the least of us with enough resources that we can stand up to our employers and tell them to go fuck themselves if they refuse to treat us with dignity and respect. In order for work to be consensual workers must have the power to refuse work.
