  • Spur Cross Conservation Area is a great place to take Mom when she visits you in the Phoenix Area. Located near Cave Creek, we picked out an easy trail that shows off some of the most impressive saguaros we have ever seen. This trail is easy and flat, and because it connects with other trails, you can extend this hike if you like. The trail we picked is the Spur Cross and Matate Loop, which is 2.5 miles long with minimal elevation. We added an out and back section and ended up completing 5 miles.

Beautiful area especially in the Spring when the water is running. Thank you for taking us along! Try out the Limestone Loop, a bit more challenging and route finding, good day hike in cooler weather. You can figure out the loop route on on the Spur Cross trail system map. There is a cool what you could do as an overnight hike out there goes from the Spur Cross trail ( a little past the corral turn off- see trail system map- go across the creek, there is a sign and spur trail that goes UP HILL) to Cave Creek trail #4. Don't take TR #247 go the other way on #4. Keep in mind that you will have to cross the creek 3 more time to complete the hike ending at the Cave Creek trail head (shuttle hike)or just do an out and back of some of it. If you stay straight on 48 (Spur Cross}after the creek crossing, keep following the Horse hoof prints(trail rides) and eventually you will see a sign hiding in the brush and a fence keep going and eventually you will see Petroglyphs and Metates on your right

I haven't tried the Limestone Loop yet but thanks for the info! I've done Elephant Mountain Loop and Skull Mesa, and I've done a bit of Cave Creek Trail from the upper end. Always wanted to do the whole thing top to bottom.
