Visit Lockett Meadow NOW! Arizona's Epic Aspen Grove
The time to visit Lockett Meadow is NOW! We visited this amazing place on Oct 3, 2024, and the fall colors are in full bloom. We shot, edited, and published this video in one day so you have time to make weekend plans. There's still a week or so left for you to experience this magical place before most of the leaves are gone, but go as soon as you can.
Locket Meadow in located in the inner basin of the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, Arizona. This 3.5 mile (round trip) trail is popular for a reason. Imagine walking through an Aspen Grove so incredible that you can't even believe that it's real. The road to the trailhead is closed, so the price of admission is an additional 6.5 mile round trip on the closed dirt road. It's worth it, and it keeps the crowds away, making this place even more special.

Leave No Trace! Trashpacking at West Clear Creek
มุมมอง 183วันที่ผ่านมา
Leave no trace when you're in the wilderness. Seems pretty obvious, right? But what do we do about the people that just don't care? When we were backpacking to Maiden Falls at West Clear Creek last week, we saw a lot of trash at our campsite. Normally we would just pick it up and take it with us, but there was just so much of it. In addition to the regular small trash items that you see at a ca...
Maiden Falls, The Beautiful Hike that Wants to Kill You

Maiden Falls (sometimes called Indian Maiden Falls), is one of the most striking features of West Clear Creek Wilderness. The hike there is amazing and treacherous, and one of our absolute favorites. We like to backpack to the creek so we can spend a whole day going to the falls then back to camp. There's about a half dozen campsites along the creek portion of the trail. The trail starts at the...

Thompson Trail and Black River Trail in Arizona's White Mountains

On this adventure, we explore a part of the White Mountains that we have never been to before. The remote White Mountains feature miles of creeks and rivers, endless dirt road, and lightly trafficked trails. How to Run Without Injury: Lean, Land, Launch

You can also get this tent in DCF fabric with carbon poles and it’s as light as the Duplex; however, better because you get to keep the double wall and thus don’t have to deal with really bad condensation that the single wall Duplex causes. Furthermore, you also keep all the features that this tent offers that the Duplex doesn’t have. The carbon poles for this tent in the upgraded version are also lighter than the pole flex-kit for the Zpacks Duplex too and this tent is semi-freestanding and the Duplex is not and requires two trekking poles. That being said, this tent in DCF with carbon poles is like $300.00 USD more in price than the Duplex though and double the regular price of this tent. In my view, it was worth it as I sold my Zpacks Duplex tent to get the Tiger Wall 2 Carbon/ DCF.

I purchased the "SheWee" brand of stand-up urinal on Amazon a number of years ago and have used it on many outdoor trips, finding it convenient and discreet, and quite portable. It comes as a set of 2 detachable pieces-- the funnel itself and then a hose-like tube that connects to the end of the funnel to increase the distance of the flow of liquid away from the body and help with direction. It has its own carrying case and I looked at the website again recently and see they've added a lot of fun colors now. The only caveat I have with any of these is of course to pay attention to wind direction; as you can imagine, that can create a bit of an issue in higher wind situations if you're not facing away from it. But the description even shows that you can place the end of the spout into a water bottle or other similar device; due to its narrow shape it can fit into other containers while using it and thereby prevent any splashing or wind-related accidents. Prior to purchasing this one, I have also used a small paper type device that comes with a napkin wipe but found that after some years, the glue holding the paper together had separated maybe in the heat. They were still helpful and are even smaller, but those ones are fully disposable so you would have to buy more, whereas the first one I mentioned is washable and reusable.

@@shutupandhike We (2 of us) went down 142E and had one man boats strapped on our BP's ( looked like turtles) with a bellows air pump and patch kit. The Boats could go thru the slots easy ( put in and lay on top) and didn't us much energy ( enjoyable , very serene) at the end I had 5 patches, he had 7. We took 5 days, no rush. Went in June no monsoon. YOU DEFINITELY NEED A HIKING 'STAFF', a nice thick tall wood pole - it will save you big time. Yes, sometimes the Creek is the best route to go. We wore Boots for support and a change of dry clothes for nights. One man tents kept bugs/ants at bay. LOL - when we made it to Bull Pen the Camp Host ( campground has been removed ) there said a lot of people coming out look like death warmed over. Now a lot of people know about WCC, when we went not so much. I did a lot of BP'ing in my Day - Down the Grand Canyon 11 times. etc,etc , but WCC was my ultimate adventure. Where ultra-light goes ultra wrong. It's not the light weight that causes the feather leakage, it is the weave that is not tight enough. I've been using Warbonnet down ultra light products and have never had any problems with feathers leaking through. The downside is that they make only single wide products as the primary target are hammockers. Another great thing compared to the Zpacks quilts are that you can have one custom made and with extra down. I really like my other Zpacks products but their sleeping bags and Quilts just don't cut it imho. :)

I look forward to the days I get to hike in a canyon like this. So cool seeing this oasis. I am always curious about flash flood risk management in places like this. What is your process on determining the right time to go?

    • @shutupandhike
      @shutupandhike 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

Flash flood risk management is the responsibility of the hiker in this canyon. The risk is very real. We watch the weather in the area using the Clime app. It is the best real time localized one we have found. There is a little bit of signal at the trailhead if you have Verizon. That said, it’s impossible to check weather from inside the canyon. Our favorite campsite is near a good escape route, and that is on purpose. We always carry our Garmin just in case we get stranded and need emergency assistance. Another app that I find useful is called River. It shows the flow and depth of most creeks in the area, and you can look at historical data to see if it is deeper than you are used to. Ultimately, you need to have a Plan B and the good sense to ditch this hike if you are even a little bit worried.

A lot of people make similar comments on our other videos, telling us to stop showing everybody where all the cool spots are. I figure if it's on AllTrails and TH-cam and easily located on Google Maps, I'm not really giving away any secrets. But still, I do sympathize with these comments. The internet has made it really easy to explore the wilderness, and it must be frustrating for people who had to do it the hard way. And now, because it's so easy, you have annoying desert dwellers like me coming around and making stupid videos. We do try to leave places cleaner than we found them, and we are starting to create videos that encourage others to do the same. So hopefully, if somebody visits the White Mountains because of this video, they will be respectful guests to your home. I ultimately want people to get out there and experience the amazing wilderness that is all over Arizona. For me, it's everything. Living in Phoenix is hard. It's hot, dirty, and crowded. But, in addition to our local desert mountains (that are too hot half the year), you can drive for a few hours in almost any direction and ascend a REAL mountain and find trees and streams and fresh air and life, and it's less expensive than therapy.

@shutupandhike I do agree I have a home also in gilbert because my family after they closed down Southwest lumber my dad started building custom basement homes down in the valley including one for us to come and go while growing up making working in the summertime a must at age 13 so when I was able to legally drive I was taking my friends I made down there and took them up ther for weekends to escape the heat and alot of my friends were shocked by the temperature change which led to quite a few families getting ther own places up ther over the years.. im not against people discovering it but I'm against the type of people that just do whatever they want and they don't respect the land and tge people which I think is a common courtesy thing which unfortunately there are a few more than one might think which those people can got somewhere else imo.. the white mountains is sacred in a way because it's shared with alot of reservation land that welcome people to enjoy their land also and only ask to please stay out of and off ther certain sacred areas that are burial sites and what not that's why ther marked off limits on maps and by signs as you wonder about but other than that I'm all for people getting out and seeing some of Arizona's best kept secrets I only ask that you do it with respect and leave it either the way you found it or better it's not too much to ask I love your guys videos and you guys do a very good job of showing the way to enjoy it so it can remain that way for generations to come

I was fortunate to grow up in lakeside/pinetop area so was lucky to have have the white mountains in my backyard.. that area you said not to go is actually sacred land and something they do not take lightly if you trespass for a few reasons I won't state incase it provokes others to try and venture there.. I always said if I was able I'd love to build my home right at the tree line to one of the many meadows on the Eastside of baldy the best kept secret in Arizona where you truly can get away from it all

Growing up in that area sounds awesome. We would like to live near the White Mountains someday.

@shutupandhike it's definitely seems like it's not part of the same state as down in the valley, I have a house in gilbert too and it's strange you can hardly get a neighbor to wave back at ya let alone say hi.. it didn't use to be that way, but anywhere I go up there everybody has nothing but time it seems and will wave & talk your ear off about anything if you let them.. lol.. anyways I enjoy your videos and never hesitate to move there if you find a deal or a way take it

In Sanders Arizona .. I have plenty of chicken wire fencing you can use to build a cage ..😲🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇 I noticed I have 8 baby rabbits .. these are meat rabbits ... They grow fairly big .... I am not sure the mom would take care of them but I put a temporary nest box in the cage .. someone could take the vial I have and feed them whole milk .. let me know

Well, maybe not Better than fossil springs, but it's a lot easier to get to. And the crawdads taste like trout, I kid you not.

The fact that a permit isn’t required is one of the best things. They require actual planning, and that’s a pain. Didn’t know that about crawdads!

Cool! Was it the one with the rock table and chairs? We discovered that one on our second trip, but haven’t camped there since.

That's great! But, how do you keep out the cold and rain without suffocating yourself? With all the comments on this video, nobody has explained that yet 😆

@shutupandhike A frame tarp works but I stick the bivy inside my ultralight tipi tent.
