    Sam, you must be extremely proud of your daughter. The way she speaks and the maturity of her thoughts are awesome. Happy birthday Skylar. 🎊

    my daughter is also in theater and I try to see every show but it is tough not being able to actually see her on stage. Like you, I can pick her voice out in the chorus and I cherish every time she has a solo. The silver lining of the pandemic is that her shows were performed virtually which was great so I can watch it on my large screen...

    I ran a business and my employee once remarked.. "damn your Vulcan hearing!" My parents struggled with their own issues and they were sighted. I think quality parenting is about a joyful attitude and I'm glad you get to have a good dad. ^5 guys! (that's high five in case you didn't know)

    As a legally blind dad of two adult daughters who have both been married for some time now with children of their own, I can say I very much enjoyed and appreciated this.
    Like y'all, our family had to work with it, and I can happily say that my daughters ALWAYS had my back. Looks like you've been likewise blessed, Sam.
    All the best to you and your amazing family!

    Thanks Skyler! My own adult children are not adjusting easily to my vision loss. I’m glad you’re so supportive of your dad and open to people with disabilities.

    Hey! This is a fun video, it was interesting to listen to all of the answers! I’ve always been wondering what it would be like for a child with a visually impaired or blind parent, I’ve always been interested to hear the perspectives, thanks so much for this video, very interesting!

  • @MrDavidlfields

    Good perspectives. I think it does confuse folks when they see those of us who are legally blind do things. Vision is a spectrum and some of us have more functional vision than others. Thank you Skylar for your insights.

    And Skylar, your perspective is refreshing, and wonderfully put. I think as you stated, growing up with such an “awesome” dad gives you more insight into life than most people.
    Sam and Skylar, thank you so much for letting us peek into your lives.
    👍🏼❤️

    I am so glad you guys did this video again now that Skylar is older! I especially love hearing her take on the "struggles" of growing up with a VIP parent.

  • @balbinol.f.8976
    @balbinol.f.8976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi from Spain.
    Y'm also a vip, with RP and also with a daughter, and yours attitude, reminds me of her when she was a teenager, so...
    Must congratulate you for the daughter you have.
    She seems very mature for a 14 year old girl and very elocuent speaking too, which nowadays, sadly isn't common among teenagers.
    And of course...
    Happy Birthday in advance!

    You should both be PROUD! Great father & daughter. You made some great points wich one can relate. Sometimes it is nice to have perks but on the other hand it is also nice to not have all the attention on you when you would like a little privacy. I never really struggled with my children, however did get really upset one time due to the fact I couldn't read books to them. I almost had a meltdown over a trivial matter, then realised i can just make up the stories & need to get a grip! And if you're considering having children and are visually impaired / blind, I definitely wouldn't hesitate either. You only regret the things you didn't do but was considering. :-)

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that’s what I did a lot when she was younger as well. I would just either make up the bedtime story or tell her the story of a book I had read. Spending the time with the kids and making the connection was more important than the story!

    Awesome video!
    For my son it’s a bit different. He was 19 when I was diagnosed with vision loss. He’s 27 now and we’ve kind of switched roles. He does a lot for me, like taking me places when his dad can’t and that one is hard on me. I remember the days when I was taking him to Scouts, Little League, that kind of thing and the roles are reversed. He’s also my biggest cheerleader.

    What would be really cool would be to get a number of all of our kids together and just turn the camera on and let them talk to each other about our being VI. That would be a hoot.

    I want to share a vaguely related anecdote. I've been visually impaired for about 60 years and legally blind since 1994. When our son (many years ago) went for his first driver test, one of the questions on the multiple-choice test was, "How can you tell if a pedestrian is blind?" He chose, "You can't tell" as his answer. The "correct" answer was, "A blind person carries a white cane." Fortunately our son had the sense not to get confrontational with the police officer administering the test, and she accepted his explanation that his father is "blind" and doesn't carry a white cane. He got his license.

    as been a vi person all my life and male been vi think inpacks on your life as you dont have the freedom to be spontainous and have to plan things more .think it must have been hard to have to deal with some of the questions but quedus and respect. to move on in life with vi its important to understand how people feel around vi to move forward . can i say your daughter is older in her mind than her years so you and your wife have done a great job .
    black lifes matter . this is not about that but as got me thinking the people we gravitate to in life are people who have simular interests or values what ever skin colour or religious backgrounds so the problem isnt the colour of are skin its more to do with in the differences in are values or interstes .what colour skin are vi people in a sighted world people dont understand are lifes .sorry for the rant you are a top guy if we stop thinking how to make are lifes better and others life doesnt get any better

      Unfortunately, the only options would be to cover your eyes with dark sunglasses. I would recommend wraparound sunglasses to block out the most light.

    As a blind adult hahaha!!! I get two things from people these days and I laugh. 1. They say. “Wow!!!! You don’t sound like a blind person.” I say back. “Well, what is a blind person suppose to sound like.” And the other thing is they say “you don’t act blind.” The other thing I get commented on is people think I can see totally as a sighted person they say all the time I conduct my self like a sighted person and I am actually great full for this because I had 2 great parents growing up both sighted of course. But yea. I guess people think that blind people are suppose to sound compleetly different than a sighted person when the person is a compleetly normal individual without their sight. Hahahahaha!!! I even forget that I am blind. I have learned to live in a sighted world and conduct myself like that of a sighted person. I mean i am a working person just like the next person I don’t sound any different or look different to anyone else. Everyone is different of course in their own way but as far as a person same thing hahahahaha!!! Sam I hope you have Skyler on again. That was so awesome father daughter video.

    I know you said you're sick of explaining it so I tried Googling it but no answers so I noticed he can still see some things at first I thought he was just following sound but then as the video progressed so he's legally blind sorry I'm just trying to understand this but he can still take pictures so he's not completely blind I feel silly asking these questions but you don't know if you don't know

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should never feel silly for asking these questions, I’m happy to answer them! Yes, I’m legally blind due to a retinal disease that has caused me to lose central vision. So I can only see with peripheral. If you would like to learn more, I have lots of videos on my channel talking about it. Including one video explaining my entire vision story.

    • @theblindlife

      My wife Rachel and I have actually done a whole series of videos together called couples Q&A. We talk about dating, marriage, home life, parenting, etc. You can find those by searching couples Q&A on my TH-cam channel. They are also in the couples Q&A playlist.
