    It's an ex-Southern Alco RS3 owned by New River Railway (museum train) that broke down in 2008 and lack of funding by the museum that ownes it it remains there for now. It is not abandoned, it is in "Storage" there as the call it until they have the means and funds to tow it back and restore it properly.

      Guess towing would cost a whole lot if it's been that long of a time. Thank you for update.

    This train has only been sitting for about 8 years.
    The owners used to run it until a mishap where this train almost went head on with a company train that was transporting materials and the company banned the owners from operating on their tracks so the train was moved to this track and that's where it sits. But it wasn't abandoned in the 80's.
    The owners and the company don't mind people visiting the train and it's not haunted.

  • @ExplorationUnknown
    @ExplorationUnknown  7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Upon futlrther research this train was actually abandoned in 2008. Not in the 80s like I had originally thought. I made the mistake by reading an article about a diffrent train that was in the same area.

    I was young but i remember when they shut down the tracks grom Crab Orchard west to Cookeville Tn. The train still runs limestone from what was Franklin Limestone there in Crab Orchard east to Knoxville. It pretty much follows the (old road) as we call , but Hwy70. Some really cool places along that road. My mom side is from the Lenoir City area. Love that part of the country. Great video

    with your fascination of trains you would love to come to New York City and see the train under the Waldorf Astoria that was made for FDR for him to get out during the war. Its been there since it's still considered an active military section because all the presidents used to stay at the Waldorf Astoria they would have access to it in case of a catastrophic emergency.

    There's a movement amongst us fans that live along the Second District, CNO&TP, to get 520 up and running again. She's too big for the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, as the curves are too narrow and tight. We're starting either an Indigogo or GoFundMe page to support her restoration.

    1950s San Francisco PCC tramcars had the same seating setup, you were traveling backward or forward depending on whether the tram was on the outward or inward leg of its journey. And I have ridden on one, there's one of those at the Sydney Tramway Museum at the outer Sydney suburb of Loftus.

    What a totally awesome vid. Perhaps mechanical issues for being abandoned in place, the train in itself is in beautiful condition, I'm also glad as others have said, no real vandalism, no graffiti and the like, I'm sure thats subject to change which would be a real shame. Thanks to you guys and TH-cam for for posting this great video so others, like myself can in the comfort of or own homes watch and view this kinda find. Great job guys.....Looking forward to more....

    By lake Ohpacon ( that's how the word sounds, don't know the spelling) in N.J. they have a place where there's a large room & on a very long table is a little town with houses & stores, & train stations & alot of miniature trains that go about the town. Then the lights go dim & the little houses & trains & lamp posts light up. I think the place is called Trains America but not sure. I haven't been there in years.Near by you used to be able to ride steam trains. It was alot of fun.

    I don't know its age, but it was parked in 2008. A lot of people go check it out. It's a SHAME that people had to steal a lot of the parts from it. It's such an attraction, the state needs to make it a Tourist Attraction site and secure the rest of it. It's great for people who love to do photography. MOTHER NATURE is slowly reclaiming it.

    I've been trying to search for this this on g-maps for awhile.... There is no direct location for this...and that's a good thing, the less people know about its location, the longer it'll be preserved there in nature... I've watched a few videos about this particular train and a few forums, gathered some indirect data, and pieced it together... I'm convinced I have found it on g-maps...lurking in shadows...as it should be and will remain... I'm just glad I found it... If I'm ever up that way, I shall pay it a visit if it hasn't been rescued, which one can only hope... Great find, great video...

    The ALCO RS-2 is a 1,500-1,600 horsepower (1,100-1,200 kW) B-B road switcher diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) from 1946 to 1950. ALCO introduced the model after World War II as an improvement on the ALCO RS-1. The locomotive was one of several road switchers in a crowded market, including the Baldwin DRS-4-4-1500, EMD GP7, and FM H-15-44. ALCO discontinued the RS-2 in 1950 in favor of the ALCO RS-3. Several examples have been preserved.

    Locomotive is an Alco RS3 unit built late 1940s or early 50s. First car is a combine baggage coach, with the baggage room turned into a concession area. Second car was as a commentor said a former commuter coach, hence the seating.

  • @JPVideos81
    @JPVideos81 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The seats in the last car are reversible. if you notice, they all have a raised part near the aisle, that's a handle for you to pull to switch the direction of the seat, some passengers don't like riding backwards.

  • @snowdropbrisk

    I can't for the life of me recall all the details but back in the mid 1970s to early 1980s Southern went through a merger or mergers (almost all the big U.S. railroads that still existed at the time went through mergers or simply shut down) and passenger service ended rather suddenly. I THINK that is how CSX came into existence as we know it today. Also AMTRAK became the only full time passenger train service about that time. I've heard, over the years, that some trains were simply left on sidings and the crews walked away unemployed. It's been a while but the last time I made the trip back home to South Carolina via I-95 in the day time (I prefer to drive the route at night...It's an old man thing) I saw maybe five to seven passenger cars, but could not see if there was an engine attached, just parked on a long disused section track in Southern Virginia or there abouts. I verified, for my own peace of mind, that what I had seen was not just a train parked for some mechanical or safety reason when I made the return trip to Maryland by the same route and saw those same cars right where they had been a week earlier. Those cars looked rather modern and are/were visible from I-95 to anyone who is looking for them or happens to be looking in the right direction at the right time (if you are South bound on I-95 they would be to your right and visible through a tree line).

    • @dennisb9157
      @dennisb9157 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FD Mackey The Southern Railroad merged with the Norfolk & Western in the late 1970s to form Norfolk Southern. CSX was formed through various railroads that ended up defunct. The passenger cars you saw more than likely belonged to the RF&P, P&W, or NJT/CNJ. The RF&P and P&W ran commuter trains primarily in Maryland and Virginia, to the best of my knowledge. They discontinued service in the early 1990s. The P&W turned to all freight. CSX took them over if I am not mistaken.

    That train was used to film the re-make of the movie, The Fugitive. A debunk
    railway sold the train to the film company for pennies on the dollar. After the
    movie was filmed in 1993, the train was abandoned, stolen my Hobo's and
    drove it until it ran out of fuel.

    This train was last operated about 2010-2011. The tracks have not been used since 2012 by RJC but i believe is still owned by RJC. They have filed to officially abandon and tip out the line once and for all. That request as not been approved as of yet as some would like to bring the tracks back for storage and or excursion train.

    Thanks to the internet and where to look it didn't take long to find it and what happened. Looking at there rear, the non cab end, there's a box fan on the cooling fan. It seems the installed fan quit, the box fan wasn't enough to cool her and i'm led to believe the poor girl overheated. Not saying that's what happened but as i see it, and as a lover of trains and what info is available thats my thoughts. Sad to see that the main lights and ditch lights have already been vandalized :( There's two sides of the ending, as an old RS-3, she can remain with nature, and not turned into razor blades and soda cans like so many have before her.

    This engine ran in 2010. It hasn't been sitting since the 80's. Plus it wouldn't have ditchlights if it was from the 80's

    I enjoy your videos. You don't try to do stupid scary crap, if it's tense it's natural to the environment. You don't have that stupid ass background music, THANK YOU for that. That is so super annoying. You take your time and move slowly so we can actually explore vicariously through you. You make really good videos. Thank you. :)
