I was just talking about this house the other day!!! I grew up in Oak Ridge TN always saw this house at the top of the hill over the water, I was always so amazed! My old landlords ended up building a house on the property Jake butcher owned! When I saw it up close I fell in love! I was always scared to go inside because I heard ghost stories growing up & people like staying in the house also it's not mine😂 but I did get a up close look.. it's such a work of art! It's so sad to me no one has taken this house on as a serious project! I know if I had the money I would! I live in FL no so I don't get to see it anymore.. Thanks for taking me inside with you! I LOVED it!

Hell, 85% belong to the religious cults and believe invisible imaginary heroes and villains with super powers actually *exist!*
People molest, rape, rob, torture and murder each other by the millions every year. What's a little property destruction by comparison?

I, too, remember the "Butcher" days in banking. I had just began my banking career that lasted almost 30 years. It changed the banking industry in Tennessee forever. The days of "good ole boys" banking were over in Tennessee. BUT LET'S NOT FORGET....Jake was not alone in this story. His brother, C.H. Butcher, their friend Jesse Barr and MANY more that were also involved in this mess. And as a matter of fact, from the things I remember, Jake appeared to be the lesser of the evils.
However, there is still no excuse for their actions.

FollowYourDreams google "Whirlwind Mansion". A lady did a blog about this house back in 2012. Lots of interesting information about it. I'm from Knoxville/Oak Ridge as well. I grew up admiring this property. In the 90's a developer purchased the property, divided and sold off the land. That is when they built the houses around it. I was crushed to look over river and see all the construction. It was so beautiful. He divided the house into 5 apartments/condos. He did rent them out but the tenants complained of unusual high utility bills. They quickly became impossible to rent. The house is now owned by the bank. It's currently for sale. The parts of the house where you see framing only is where the mold took over. Within the last few years they have removed the sheetrock and wood floors. They can't very well ask for 1.2 million with all that mold growing. They have lowered the price to 799,900.00. Like he said in the video, it is too expensive to maintain monthly. Very sad to see it in such disarray.

Knoxville world's fair was the first world fair that didn't lose money. It made a profit for the city. The area where the park was built was really run down. There a really nice park that there now. There also a small convention center and hotel at that location. I think the world's fair was a plus for the community not really that negative. If you had seen this area before the fair I think you would agree.

Nice video, thanks. There is nothing there in "disrepair". That would mean the house was collapsing on itself to be called "disrepair". Not bad shape for as long as it's been abandoned. The 70's was the last decade when houses were built with QUALITY materials to last. Had it been built in the 80's, it would be in a lot worse condition.

My dad lives just down the road from there. I've passed by that place 100s of times. Jake Butcher's daughter Scarlett is about same age as my older sister. In the town, Jake Butcher built this ugly monstrosity of a bank building right across the street from the old stately courthouse building. Its giant hulking bulk totally overshadowed the courthouse and the architectural styles totally clashed. That bank is the ugliest thing ever to be built in that town to this day. Soon after they built this hideous bank, Jake went to jail.

Just FYI ... Knoxville to my knowledge is not paying off any World's Fair Debt. In fact during the fair they actually burned the bank note. World's Fairs are not designed to make money, but in the case of Knoxville's attempt, the debts were paid off. That's not to say that the city hasn't incurred debt on efforts to revitalize the site, which before the fair was a dilapidated rail yard between downtown and the UT Campus.

Quite a house in Tennessee, however, Illinois has the record for corrupt politicians. Illinois is the only state to have a Governor sent to prison and there have now been THREE (one still serving his 14 year sentence). Illinois also has the great city of Chicago which has had several politicians sentenced to prison terms for a variety of reasons, most recently, Jesse Jackson Jr. and a long, long, long list of others.

I remember Jake Butcher and his campaign slogan " Jake in '78". Actually my baby brother was named after his father Jake and Jake Butcher. Rumors had it that there was a pond on Cecil Butcher's property that the Butcher family hid millions of dollars in gold coins. I remember when authorities came out and drained that pond. My little brother's father Jake Nicley of Luttrell Tn helped with Jake Butcher's campaign. I will never forget meeting Jake Butcher in Halls at the IGA owner by his supporter Mr. Allen Cocker. Mr. Butcher shook my hand and at the age of 13 I knew not to trust him. Do not misunderstand he was very charming but there was a look in his eyes. My father always said if a man's eyes are shifty never trust him or any politician. Jake Butcher ended up being a slumlord in Maynardville Tn.

Truth to tell, for the amount of time house the house has been empty and what with it being so accessible I'm surprised the vandalism hasn't been much worse. What a beautiful house and so is the setting. I'm not an expert but I suspect the mansion it's not yet at but not far from the point where it won't be worth the time and expense of fixing up. I hope someone will salvage more of the woodwork and other usable fixtures and fittings. Looks like some work is being done on the lawn and shrubs. Maybe odd but I think it would be fascinating to live by a deserted house and to watch it being gradually reclaimed by nature but it would be better that the house be occupied and enjoyed and cared for.

IT was purchased by a wealthy couple after lost by the Butchers. They found it way too expensive for the upkeep. The banks remodeled and made it into condos, but renters said the heat/a.c. bills were more than their rent. Bankers wanted to turn it into a home for senior citizens, but neighbors protested because of the narrow road leading there and an influx of traffic. About 10 years ago, mold became the overriding issue. Water and time produce mold and it would be millions to remove it properly. People who have dealt with that property testify that it is haunted and cursed because of the way the Butchers cheated the city of Knoxville and its residents. Jake went from bank to bank taking out loans to pay for their lifestyle while he charged the food for the parties and did not pay the stores afterwards. He rarely paid his hired help as well. He should have rotted in jail, but spent his time is a "country-club" prison. Both he and his brother deserve whatever the good Lord decides is their fate now that they are both dead.

As a person that started a transportation museum from $0.00, I see great potentials for people to acquire places like this, get grants and donations (and volunteer labor) to restore such places (let homeless volunteers that help stay there while restoring it); and turning it into a tourist attraction or museum, or a hotel or ???? You could do well acquiring these places you find and partnering with someone to do something with them.

    • @Sunspherebook
      @Sunspherebook 5 ปีที่แล้ว

All were tried years ago. Main problem is the road leading to the place. Won't hold more traffic and is not zoned commercial. Neighbors have fought all attempts to turn it into a business as that would affect their daily lives. House is full of mold now and would take millions to resolve.

In about 1985, I was at that house to purchase a horse from the man who purchased the house from the court for very little, after Butcher went to jail. The family only used part of the house (because it was so large.)

I found this video quite interesting and I enjoy the observations and comments you make. I just don't understand how any property can just sit vacant for so long. Love watching your videos.

Back in the 70's and 80's in order for it to be called a estate for lower taxes it needed to have a tennis and basketball court . To get the tax break.

Hold camera up eye level when walking around. Got dizzy cause it was moving on floor. Otherwise, good job.

You should have gone upstairs one last time, just to chronicle it all in one video. (yes I know you have a link from a previous video). I think it would have been neat to see if anything changed, plus you had better lighting and equipment now, and you had exploring companions, so it would have been a nice addition to this video. You could have taken your time and looked around one last time. Would be pointless to go back and do a video for just the upstairs now.

It would be so much better if u didn't shut the camera off from room to room. I really prefer seeing the entire layout. Also...if people have tried to live there since Butcher (I think that's his name), then the papers and such was probably theirs not Butcher's.

I hear EVPs often so much better when I slow the audio speed down to 0.5. You can change the speed in the settings option in the lower right corner of the screen. These are good examples of EVPs heard much better at the 0.5 audio speed. Especial the first one at 3:00. I hear "Beat'em!" at 3:00. "Hey,there" at 3:32. "Had a lot of money." at 4:05. "Who are you?!" at 5:52. "Hey!" at 6:04. You might find it hard to hear the EVP at 6:18. I hear "Who is it?!" I only hear it when I slow the audio speed down. Thank you for sharing. That was fun.

My Mother Rebecca Sutton Tweed used to date Jake Butcher. That was back in the 1950's when he was driving gasoline trucks. I met him about the time of the World's Fair in 1982. It was Jake's brother that was the crooked banker more than Jake.

Not that it matters,I don't think that house has been abandoned since the 80's at all. maybe since late 90's 2000's. The reason I come to conclusion is because of the pool cover. I used to install those covers for wealthy people..did it for about 15 years. even though that pool looks like shit...that cover is a Macco freeform mesh cover with reinforcements on the corners. They didn't have thoughs in the 80's. and its in pretty good condition and worth about 4000 dollars. And I'm betting the anchors are brass.

There is a tunnel from the main house to the house where is wife’s parents lived. Also I dated a girl that lived there in the 2000s with her grand parents. I have been in that house with they lived there got lost a couple times trying to find the passage way. The old man would never tells where it was located

The candle wax around the house is a spiritual candle ceremony called hoodoo candle magic. It has alot to do with casting spells and some how them doing that with the wax tells them if the spell will be a success or not.
