How To Make Improvised Smoke Grenades

  • Improvised smoke grenades are simple that: smoke grenades made with improvised methods and materials. Something you can do, as an individual, easily and legally in the US. Sure, improvised smoke grenades are not as "glamorous" as factory smoke grenades, but they are effective for what they need to do: produce tons of smoke for cheap. Now, we never show how to make anything on this channel as YT would shut us down for good. This is one subject we can show as it's so innocent and harmless that even the YT censors can get along with it. So, this is our very first long format video featuring instructions on how to make one version of an improvised smoke grenade using tin cans as the hull.

We finally found a subject we can show on YT that won't get us flagged for "indirectly sponsoring terrorism" as one karen pointed out. That line always gets us laughing. This will not be our only video on smoke bombs as Jake is working on different styles to show you. This includes a video on how to make colored smoke. We will also do a video on improvised tear gas, we just can't show you how we made it. Sorry!

improvised tear gas sounds pretty interesting. Something like mixing in peppers, I remember reading a news story where a building with a large amount of hot peppers inside caught fire and they said the smoke caused a lot of irritation. Also something I would like to see tested is using PVC for the hulls, it produces some nasty irritating fumes when heated so I wonder if that might work.

This brought back memories. I received a Gilbert chemistry lab kit for my tenth birthday in 1962. It contained the ingredients and instructions for the first one you showed, so naturally I made one. It advised the addition of various substances to get colored smoke, like KMnO4 (also included) to get purple smoke. That was fun.
No, the cops didn’t show up, but I was briefly very popular with the neighborhood kids. Then I followed a different recipe and blew a chunk out of the sidewalk and my mom took the set away.
They don’t sell toys like that any more.

I live in Switzerland and I was an airsoft player for a while. I wanted to have smoke grenades, but wanted to stay within the boudaries of the law, so I checked the laws and regulations about this. Here, in Switzerland, "pyrotechnical smoke producing devices" are also subject to authorization and an explosive device permit. The reason invoked is not because of any blast, but just because of the temperature these compounds produce. So, audience, be aware of this when playing with smoke grenades, don't set the forest on fire ! Greetings from Switzerland !

A small amount of powdered nitrate/sugar pressed on top of the molten mixture really helps it in igniting reliably and taking off faster. A ball of toilet paper loosely pressed on top will keep it in place.
Sodium nitrate works a little better than potassium and can still be found pretty easily. You can use a slightly higher ratio of fuel thus more smoke but it can accidentally ignite easier so beware of that.

Chilli peppers contain irritants other than oleic capsicum that aren't regulated that you could also add into the mix. :) Upscale this by using a coffee can or large paint can. You do not want to make the holes in the lid until the very end of the process. Fill up the can to about 50% to 70% of the can's volume, and make sure to have the hole in the middle of the mix to accept the fuse. In a bucket, a bit larger than the can used, mix up some plaster of Paris to just cover the bottom with an inch or two of plaster and let harden. Once hardened, place the can in the middle of the bucket and proceed to fill the gap between the can and the sides of the bucket and continue to fill the bucket till the can is covered in about a half inch to an inch of plaster of Paris and let harden. Now drill the centre hole and the surrounding holes into the lid and insert the fuse. No need for paraffin as that lid is staying put even with the increased pressure of the paraffin free mix of the v2 smoke device in this video. This will give a bit less smoke without the paraffin, but the increased rate of production will help fill an area with smoke very quickly.

If you can moderate the temperature low enough (to avoid combusting the dye itself), you can use common household dry dies to color the smoke... a little (nothing like the vivid colors you can get from a professional device). I only did it a few times, as I was more interested in volume of smoke than color, but it is doable.
I also found adding a bit more baking soda would lower the temps and give a longer burn time, thicker smoke, and smoke that didn't rise as quickly (go figure- a cooler gas rises slower than a hotter gas 😂 ).

First off, thank you for creating some of my favorite content.
I’ve had good success with melted, paraffin wax and adding potassium nitrate, then pouring that into a canister which utilized cross supports on the lids, similar to yours. After adding approximately 50% of the comp, insert a Dow, Rod, and form the rest of the comp around it. Once the wax solidifies twist the rod and remove creating a cylindrical cavity where the fuse will bottom out. Depending on the Rod used, coating it with oil can keep it some sticking to the composition.
I forgot to mention that an initiator compound helps. Potassium nitrate and aluminum powder works well so long as it’s loose.
Here’s a link to a channel I follow that made colored smoke which utilized organic dye. I have not tried it yet, however, I plan to do so as it seems to create very thick smoke. I believe potassium chlorate as the oxidizer which can be made using electrolysis and potassium chloride. It’s not a very fast process, but in theory it could provide large quantities for little cost which would likely be needed for making several devices.

There is another method that works well that is easier and safer then the cooked method. You take same mix of chemicals used in the first mixture, but instead of melting it or dumping it in the can directly, you mix it with some water. Just enough to get everything dissolved. Next lay some sheets of news paper into the water and let it set for a few hours or until the liquid has evaporated. The smoke mix is now bonded to the newspaper and can be tightly rolled and packed into your container. Makes a reasonable amount of smoke and no risk of premature combustion.

Works even better with ammonium nitrate because it tends to hold onto some water, but not enough to stop the burn and steam adds to the smoke density. An added advantage if you get the mix right is it won't start a fire. Figured this out about 30 years ago and they wouldn't start a fire even in a full trashcan.

I do quite a bit of reloading and know that grain shape can effect burn rate. Using the Mk 2 formula but allowing it to dry and harden then making it into a powder or granular form would that increase the smoke output? since you're increasing the total surface area burning that would make the reaction faster but would also give you the ability to mix in other reactants or retardents for the reaction. Is that something you guys would test for effectiveness?

I spent a good amount of my time in high school making and perfecting this mixture. I would be surprised if you didn't see some of my videos.
The addition of flaked paraffin wax to the mixture really makes the oxidizer work for its money.
A soda can that fits inside the opening of the tin can makes a nice barrier, which with wettened baking soda, works as a nice retardant to the reaction and insulator.
The epoxy putty would only serve as a way to ensure it's all one piece, but if you are assembleming just to test and are not transportating, should be negligible.
I found a 2:1 mix of nitrate to sugar, with the appropriate amounts of corn syrup added with water to boil it all down, and paraffin wax at the end to a broken up powder mixture and remelted and reconstituted, works especially well.

Unfortunately, This was before the internet, and I had no idea of how to blend, mill, and otherwise increase the strength of the combustion. So I ended up with what amounts to smoke powder. It was difficult to light with a match but would light with a fuse. Smoke volume was roughly equavalent to your #3, but IIRC a shorter burn time.
Fun times. Plus, back then I could afford the ingredients on a kids yard mowing wage.

depending on the propellant type and quantity inside, the opening must be a certain size otherwise one could easily confuse it for live ammunition (enclosed propellant case with an external ignitor). my opinion would be to crush the top shut but do not fold, this will allow the contents not to spill but if burn rate/pressure exceeds normal limits the vessel with be pushed back open this creates a relief valve sort of and control regression rate of the smoke emitting fire

The first one I've made before, remarkably fun and effective. KNO3 aka Potassium Nitrate aka Saltpeter aka Niter should be available in well stocked grocery stores (used as a preservative, among other things).
You can also use Sodium Nitrate but it's quite hygroscopic so it doesn't really store well (and drying it is iffy when mixed because too much heat sets it off), this wasn't an issue for me last I did it since I bought it dry and used all of it in a large batch, and used up all of the smoke generation in an afternoon.
