I was 13 years old at the time and was lucky enough to be at this seminar in 1981. This took place at a small music store in Greensburg Pennsylvania a bout 30 miles away from Pittsburgh. This was a special event being the only seminar Randy ever did. He was known to look in the yellow pages and fine tune his classical chops on his down time in the town he was playing at the time. Truly a guitar giant and the world would be a better place with him in it.
He did teach quite a bit in Burbank and North Hollywood where his Mom taught when were teenagers. I always felt that he really enjoyed passing on what he knew to kids on their way up.
@Michael Bennett he was literally my introduction into hard rock. Think about the timeline we're talking about, 1982. Michael Jackson, the Knack. Thats what i was listening to before a cousin of mine gave me my first guitar. Oddly enough it was a white Gibson Les Paul Japanese copy that was identical to Randy Rhoades. I had a 1 speaker cassette player that had Crazy Train playing on a loop for about 3 months. As it turned out, one of the employees for this music store was in an up and coming powerhouse metal band called "Assassin "! He was also friends with the same cousin of mine that gave me that guitar. Keep in mind the Randy agreed to giving this Seminar basically about 3 hours before hand so its not like a hugely advertised or promoted event. So me and my cousin lived about 20 minutes from where the Seminar had taken place. He had got the call and was informed about 30 minutes before the start of it all so basically throw on a pair of shoes and get your asses movin! I cant remember exactly how long the Seminar lasted but 2 things that i do remember is that he left Greenburg and went directly to the Pittsburgh Civic Arena where Ozzy was playing just 2 hours later and the 2nd and saddest thing that i remember is that 3 weeks after that Seminar, Randy would be dead! Im not gonna pretend that i was in awe when i saw him that particular day BUT from that day on Randy Rhoades became a pivotal part of what shaped me into a guitar player for the next 38 years. When i look back on that day, truly one of the greatest days of my life. Oh and another thing that has always been in my memory since that day is how big Randy had become of a guitar giant, he stood there in front of me that day only about 2"taller than me being a skinny 13 year old kid. Truly amazing!
He did two that day. A morning seminar and an afternoon seminar. I was at the latter. So was Paul Gilbert not coincidentally.Ron Wlloschell's Music City. I wish someone could explain to me how in the hell Ron got Randy to come there and do two seminars before playing the same friggin night at the Civic Arena. Or was it the day before, I forget? Either way less than two months later he was gone.
I actually know the answer to your question. Ron was in a band out in California called Assassin on the verge of being signed in the late 78,79. He met and became friends with a couple of the guys from Quiet Riot, Randy being one of them. Assassin played the metal circuit in Cali and met Randy Rhodes in the process
Randy seemed to me to be a genuinely good person. My heart aches when I hear his voice. Just a sweet, patient, considerate soul. He did not have the brash, insecure, ego-driven attitude that many of his contemporaries had. He was a teacher and student. His Mother was a music teacher, as everyone here probably knows. Sharon Osbourne said that "Randy had a great sense of humor and liked to have fun like most normal young men. But deep inside, Randy had an old soul, a very old soul." She meant that he was like a sage. He had a wisdom that was uncommon for a man so young. I think he got it from his Mom and from years of teaching his students. Life can be awfully unfair sometimes. If fate had not been so cruel, Randy would have blossomed into an even more impressive person and musician. He was around long enough to make one hell of an impact on tens of thousands of young players throughout the continents. God bless Randy and his Mom Delores. Thank you so much for this clip. @Ken M, so so genuine wasn't he? Speaking about is attitude, he always told people how he got his sound or how he played something. I recently read that at one time he asked Eddie Van Halen how he got his tone and Ed responded "That's a secret" and that Randy seemed confused and dumbfounded because he always thought it was kind to share, and part of the reason he loved teaching. If you listen to how cordial he is when the audience members are asking questions, it's so evident what his spirit is all about. To share and learn. He is basically conducting a guitar lesson in this clinic. Class. Pure Class.
@@randarmax yes indeed. I agree. He seemed like such a caring, personable, genuine soul. He knew what he knew, he put in the work and time. But, he was also interested in what information others had because he realized always knew there was more to learn.
Yes, very "old soul". As such, I'm sure he's sailing away either back into incarnation on planet on Earth somewhere -- or off to some other Universe -- doing music :)
@Bruce S Randy would have won Eddie over. Eddie was a decent soul, although his insecurities often belied that fact. Randy had patience and maturity on his side. He was growing like holy-hell in the last year of his life. Eddie, God Bless him, had already shot his load. Randy was the forefather of progressive neo-classical metal. Eddie had NO INTEREST in this kind of thing. Eddie was just Eddie. Randy was the future. Eddie never realized that fact, but perhaps he never had to. Ed made his mark. Yngwie and all his clones would take it to a new level. Eddie/Randy influences that would give us, for better or for worse, the future of the genre's that they created. PEACE.

That's because he was. He barely knew me in school, but he was always nice to me. I don't know how he knew my younger brother was a musician, but he brought him up the few times we spoke.
@@markkroll8884 A long time ago when we were at Burbank High School...maybe Muir Junior High. I knew him well enough to say Hi and maybe talk a little about Music and Theater. We were either in the same grade or one year apart. It was the 1970s! I also knew his sister, but I'm sure she doesn't remember me. My brother died 9 years ago.

He even sounded sincere and kind. It almost makes me a little emotional honestly. He was a teacher at his core. He didn't mind sharing "secrets". I loved Eddie, but early on he wasn't nearly so transparent about his tricks and secrets
I saw the 1st US tour with Motorhead here in Seattle at the Paramount Theater. I stood 15 feet in front of Randy for almost 2 hours and that changed my life.
Randy says he doesn't have a favorite guitar player. Says he likes anyone who's good. Talks up Leslie West, Michael Shanker, Richie Blackmore, even Eddie Van Halen. Randy Rhoads is a classic gentleman.
I was 20 when he passed away and it's weird for me too. I'm so glad I discovered this. He accomplished so much in such a short time. And he was humble and kind without a real ego which is so rare. Incredible.
You can tell Randy was an old soul, he was 25 but people engaged him as an elder, a giant of a guitar player and creator of some of the greatest metal songs ever recorded. How lucky are the people that had the honor of being at this seminar? Talk about something you'll never forget.

I had stage fright so bad one time the guitar player had to start the song three times (I'm a drummer, this was like 1996) the beginning of "Suck My Kiss" it was really off beat, syncopated if you will and was relatively new to me since i wasn't much of a Chili Pepper fan at the time and had anxiety problems and really couldn't concentrate and my head was blank. Then it popped in and as soon as 10 seconds in the song i was fine from then on, on stage in the pub. That was very imbarrassing to say the least! Now? Hell that was 25 years ago i have a kit in my room and just play for fun with my headphones into this phone to songs. I'd like to play with a band again but every weekend type of thing at 55 i think i'm too old idk 😐
I can't believe it has been 40 years. I was 16 and at school when I heard the news over the radio. A very tragic day for me and millions of fans around the world. Randy was a one-of-a-kind musician that was a true student and master of his craft.
Randy really doing what he truly loved more than anything....teaching....he wanted everybody to enjoy the instrument as much as he did. One of kind...generational...
Looking at pics of Randy is like looking at a ghost or an angel or something. I think it's a mixture of his great talent, his pure & innocent looks and the fact that he died so young. It's sometimes hard to believe he was a real person. I started playing guitar in 1981 and didn't know about Randy until a year or so after his death, so he's ALWAYS been like a ghost or a myth to me. (It's a beautiful myth though)
Yeah..I heard Crazy Train for the first time about a month before he died. Didn't know he was dead for about a year. News traveled more slowly in those days.
You're not the only one who feels like Randy was some kind of angel. I highly recommend the books out there on Randy. So much potential, such a tragic loss. I remember when I heard he had died. Luckily I got to see him twice with Ozzy.
Man, this is gold! I was fortunate to see Randy play with Ozzy 4 times before he passed and from the moment I first heard the Blizzard record, I was immediately a huge Randy fan, in fact, all of my friends were. When we heard Randy was killed in a plane crash, we drove around in my friend's van listening to a lot of Ozzy and grieving for his death, we were beyond bummed out, but hard to understand as 15-16 y/o kids. Later that night, when went into my garage and got a can of black Rust-OLeum spray paint, drove to our HS and painted LONG LIVE RANDY RHOADS on the front of the school. This became a big deal because they had to sand blast it off and the word was out that they were going to make the perpetrators pay for it and charge them with vandalism. Of course, all the hard rocker/metalheads were suspects, but the 4 of us swore ourselves to secrecy and to this day only the 4 of us knew who did it...well, and anyone reading this now lol. Out of all the artists and musicians that have passed away, Randy is the one we grieve for the most, he just meant so much to us as a guitar player, musician and just the person he was.
I had been a fan of Randy's after I heard and bought the Quiet Riot ll lp. His amazing playing is all over the first two Quiet Riot lps, even though the music was nowhere near what Ozzy's albums sounded like. They are hard to find but should be heard by any fan of Randy's.
@scottroberts7103 those first 2 QR albums were only released in Japan and are quite expensive. BUT...they have been re-released in "unofficial " colored vinyl and are very affordable!
Randy taught my teacher, and she always talks about how genuine he is. I picked up classical guitar because of him as well, thank you for your legacy, Randy!
We have so little left of Randy as his life was cut way too short. We can only imagine how much more he would have changed the face of music. IMO the Greatest Guitarist of my lifetime!
I've said for the last two years the only way we can turn things around from the hell we are all headed for, would be to not have internet for 5 years. And that is not going to happen, barring nuclear war. But then it's too late. Or maybe its just a reset.
I can only imagine how great it would have been to be a student taking guitar lessons from him! He knew his theory and was very patient and thorough in explaining how he did his playing.
Randy being a humanitarian a student and a teacher,gave so much to us all. I read recently where he met Eddie Van Halen years ago and asked him how he stayed in tune without a locking nut and Eddie wouldn't tell him,as I sit here and listen to Randy give a public seminar. Blizzard & Diary Monumental records. God Bless you Randy. I learned how to play by practicing your leads on tablature.

@@TedDiabetes I think that Eddie was truly threatened by Randy while Randy was just bewildered as to why Eddie wouldn't share with him how he did a certain thing. Randy was always a teacher and a student. So sharing the knowledge came naturally to him.
Randy was so humble and gracious, no ego, so sad he died so young, kind of annoying hearing people asking about all this guitar players, instead of digging into Randy's brain. So much lost so soon, how sad.
I remember hearing “Blizzard of Oz” the day it was released and going WOW who is this dude! It was life changing, as a young guitarist, and I went home and started learning that entire album. Simply brilliant!!! RIP Randy
Next to Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker is my second favorite. It's great to hear Randy mention Michael as one of his favorites. Michael must be honored, that coming from a late guitar god/legend. RR Forever!!!
I got to see Randy on March 17th 1982 in the Omni in Atlanta. Just 36 hours before he passed away. It was the best concert I ever went to. I couldn't believe it when I heard he passed away. It broke my heart. I was just learning how to play the guitar and I would sit in my room and listen to those two albums over and over again.

This is pure GOLD!!! Randy was an absolute musical genius, God rest his soul. I get chills when he goes over the different chords in Diary, and the riff that starts at 30:43 is IMO the most face melting riff in all of hard rock history! To this day I still get goosebumps when it comes up, never gets old. I’m so grateful for this !!

If I remember right, Paul gilbert said in an interveiw he attended this seminar when he was 15. Crazy that a young Paul might be asking one of these questions.
Randy Rhodes was ahead of his time.. He had a great handle on what was to come in Rock-n-Roll.. This guy was an actual pioneer to laying out chords that in 83-84 would become the new sound of Rock-n-Roll . Guys like this come along seldom.. But when they do.. They create things that have a lasting impression on their field. I mean look back at those that came along.. Blazed a trail.. Then they were gone.. Little Richie.. Buddy Holly.. So many.. The list is long. But all left great things behind.. Changes from the Norm.. It's almost like a higher power says. Okay..Let's put this guy down there and get these things on a better path of perfection.. Then Boom.. He is here then gone. Leaving masterpieces of change.. I could go on and on.. Life is so full of surprises.. Randy was just one in a long history of Greatness.. It's just sad,he couldnt have watched the seeds he planted in Rock,Blossom and Mature.. He would have loved seeing what he helped create.. It seems,sometimes.. Stars do fall from the sky.. Rest in Peace Randy Rhoades..
You can see Paul Gilbert in one of the phots. This tape circulated in the Pittsburgh area for years before it was on TH-cam. People thought it was a fake when I would play it for them until they would hear the playing.
Whoever put this out thank you so much for that. I grew up listening to Randy in the 80s. To me he is the greatest musician to ever play a guitar. Some of the choice sounds he has pick the scale he has put together and in the combination he did it he just absolutely Mozart, Bach, and Chopin, all put in one. We love you, Randy God bless man. Not to mention he’s is the cutest man on the face of this planet.
Oh my god, this is utterly priceless. To listen to him like this and wonder about where he could have gone while he was musically ascending is beautiful and crushing. I've always loved his talent
When I was a teenager in the late 80’s Randy’s mystique was immeasurable. Nothing was available to the public. Just the little remnants here and there. I used to listen to Dee on the live album just so I could hear his voice to get some sort of feel for who he was as a person. I mean there was nothing available to the public! Then the internet became what it is today and there is soooo much out there now it’s incredible. I never thought for a million years what is out now would be right at my fingertips. He seems like such a genuine nice guy. And of course the talent was always there. Thank you for so many memories Randy. I hope you’re up there in heaven so we can meet when my time comes.
A tremendous musician, a beautiful soul, completely humble, he came out and captured you and still does till today, his impact is endless, he was and still is a complete rock star, everything about Randy pulled you to him, the interest in.him is as great today as it was then, his attack on the guitar combined with his complete understanding of the instrument makes him stand out more than most, no gimmicks, no tricks.. This is so beautiful to hear. Thank you Circus Magazine. I still have a bunch of old pristine copies of the mag. Randy is the epitome of kindness, generosity, humbleness and just such a sweet spirit! I could listen to him alone for hours. Sure wish this was the whole seminar but it's fantastic for what it is. It's sad that after all these years we still have so little footage of him.. though some new clips have come out. Sharon needs to release the film's she has from the Diary tour already. It's a travesty and a real shitty thing to do by not giving Randy all his due. Nothing would have made him happier than for all his fans to be able to see him tearin it up in all his glory on some full clear shows! Plus.. we're missing out on hours of recordings and film's that Bob Daisley has in the Holy Grail that's a treasure trove of Randy's memory. Him and Randy's brother would like to see it released..but Sharon put a stop to that! It'll take a miracle if we ever hear and see all Bob has! I can't think of another musician who deserves to be seen and heard more than Randy!! ✌️💜
Wow! Sharing his secrets note for note is just awesome. What a nice young musician he was. I wish I could have been there. I'm sure I speak for everyone else watching this. If he was still around today, he would blow us away at the NAMM shows and imagine him playing on stage with G3' Satriani , Via and Randy Rhoads, etc.
At his core, Randy was a composer and a teacher. He always wanted to better himself and help others around him. If only he'd had a few more years, who knows what he would have done!

I was fortunate enough to see Randy in 1981 Detroit. Back in the day before tabs it eye opening learning his stuff. His musical ability dwarfed Van Halen.
ThumperOne yes. Eddie is a bad man I can't say anything bad about him. He rips. My point being Randy musical knowledge from teaching music dwarfs Eddies off the cuff style.
Leslie Thompson yes his playing is more fluid. Its very electric. I always like the fact he picked a lot more than tapped and climbs and scale work was great. He had great feel too. He had a great way of building solos. In addition he weaved a lot of licks in between his rhythms. He mentioned once that he starts his solo with a capital and ended them with an explanation point like a sentence.
ThumperOne I saw them both. It wasn't close. Imho. Tapping is over rated. I liked Randys tapping better than any tapping ever did. Eddie is great no doubt. The one Randy preferred was George Lynch. Eddies vocabulariry was limited imho. He dried up a long time ago. I wish We could have seen what Randy could do.
I can't believe I've never heard this. Incredible. I've been listening to him since the first Ozzy record came out and every time it still moves me. So little music that totally stands the test of time.
Wow! To hear Randy talk about this stuff is amazing. I never knew this was out there. Makes me wonder if anyone else has anything in a vault somewhere? I doubt it, but I can hope.
One thing hearing Randy play on the album, truly GOLDEN hearing him speak and break down parts of songs to the people there, just hearing him go over what he did in this recording was simply mind blowing....thank you for having this on here
Words cannot describe how cool and humble Randy was I used to see him with Quiet Riot back in the day when he was coming up as a Guitar Hero all the while teaching guitar at Musonia his Mothers music school. He was all about Music not fame and fortune. He is truly missed...
So wish this was the whole seminar. I could listen to Randy alone for hours! Sad thing is..there is film of him on the Diary tour..but who knows if we'll ever see it. That's a whole story man. If you wanna see a few cool videos you've probably never seen I can point you to where they are. As well as if you wanna hear one of if not his best concerts from March 15,1982. It's a sick recording. His playing at that point was beyond the earlier shows..as great as they were.
@@mbass718 around March 15th I believe he had all his wisdom teeth pulled plus according to his mother he was very sick with a bad cold when he left for the 2nd leg of the diary tour....she told him remember to call me, when u get where u r so I know how you been feeling...she said she felt terrible about him having to go on tour with all that he really didn't want to go because he felt terrible.....dedication for sure rip randy
@@ArronP Serious dedication!! Maybe that's why the March 15th show in particular is so ferocious! When I heard it..I thought.. this was the show they should have released as the Tribute album! Rip... gone but certainly never forgotten.. which is beyond amazing for a guy who only put out two Albums. Not counting the Quiet Riot stuff.. cause I think he really came into his total greatness when he was free to compose and play anything he wanted to for Ozz. I lost all respect for Ozz cause of the way Bob and Lee and so many other musicians were treated..but most of all because they haven't honored Randy's legacy in the way he deserves to be honored imho... after all he did for Ozzy... and yeah Ozz did plenty for him too..but still..he deserves to be seen by the millions of people who wanna see him but can't cause Sharon won't release the shows she has which is just unforgivable to me.
He was just so sweet and boyish looking. It's hard to believe that it is almost 40 years since his death. I was just a 10-years-old imperishable little girl who had watched the news of his tragedy on "Good Morning, America". #sosadsopainful. RIP,Randy!!!!
Randy was gold. I just pray that ozzy takes care of the Rhoads family and helps Randy's moms school. Oz heard 1 min of Randy and knew this was the guy .
So grateful for this upload. You can hear the " teacher" in him as he explains the specifics of his playing to the members of the audience asking questions. I just saw a video with his older brother Kelle who said Randy had over time, about 60 students that he taught at his mom's music school Musonia in North Hollywood and that before he left for Ozzy he kept only 5 or 6 students. He wanted to pursue a master's in music, concentrating in classical guitar at UCLA, his mom's alma mater. What an amazing life, though tragically brief. His legacy lives on. RR forever. 🔥❤

So true, he was such a confident bad ass in his guitar abilities, he was never afraid to share info and technique, pretty rare in guitarist this good...what a special guy and yes, the world be a better place with him in it...we lost a lot of great music when he left us. RiP R.R.

I dare say that hearing Randy speak is to guitarists the equivalent of hearing Jesus. Randy was a kind, knowledgeable, person who wanted everyone to know what he was doing, but he was so great, nobody was as smooth and amazing as he was. I was 12 years old when my older brother brought home Blizzard of Oz and I had to start guitar and figure out those sounds and tones. We didn't have TH-cam then, we had to slow down the 33rpm records over & over again til we figured it out...Kids, the struggle was real!
We miss you Randy Rhoads. Your guitar playing lives on. I wish you had lived longer but I’m glad you were alive at some point and released great music. People are saying he looks like an angel but I would say for me it’s because he’s so soft spoken and humble. Plus the fact that he’s wearing all white with his cream Gibson Les Paul makes it seem like that to me. R.I.P Mr. Rhoads 👍🎸❤️
I'm sure this has been commented on but Paul Gilbert admitted to taking the day off from school to attend this clinic. Check out Nick Bowcotts Sweetwater video about Randy. It looks like young Paul standing behind another fan with Randy in the same shot. Pretty cool!!
I love these old interviews and watching the footage of RR playing he was such a genuinely nice and humble person he’s my all time favorite player and the reason I picked up the guitar I get really melancholy when listening to these

Yes exactly evh was doing the whole smoke and mirrors hiding his riffs and technique's. While Randy would literally break it down and show his tricks and chord progressions. He also sounds very nervous during this and probably new that this was more of a meet and greet and ask questions instead of a actual lesson.
What in the world possessed him to get on that airplane, we will never know. This is especially baffling, considering everyone said he had a fear of flying.

I remember a funny commercial where Tiger Woods was giving golfing tips. “I’ve been asked what a golfer should do if he slices a drive on a par 5 and lands in a bunker. Easy! Just pull out your 5 iron and hit a 250 yard shot to the green.” It’s funny because only a few people on the planet are good enough to do that. Listening to Randy Rhoads explain his solos reminds me of that. “It’s really just an e minor scale,” then he plays a riff only a few guitarists in the world can play.
As those back then remember none of this music was aired on radio. Us fans would have to buy the records/ cassettes or go to the concerts. Headbangers ball MTV was all there was. Nothing like today where you can look up and find anything or anyone. Remember hearing when he died and it just burned through me as a fan. What a GREAT GUY!!
I cant believe how good Randy Rhoads was especially at the young age of 25 and even younger because you know he was not just all of a sudden playing that good, he had such a cool style almost crying so emotional no wonder Ozzy wanted Randy he was never egotistic at all and i heard he would go to local music stores and actually take lessons from local music teachers and he said you never know what you can learn from people that arent even famous the dude was Destined to make it because he was a musicians musician it seems like i learn something new every time i listen to Randy, and diary of a mad man is a masterpiece and will go down in history as just that, R.I.P Randy Rhoads you are an extreme legend and will never be forgotten.
He was the first young player that composed classical guitar for a hard rock OZZY album !!. I enjoyed the fun " is that wah-wah ? question... " Mr Rhoads kindly plays crazy train verse... nope no wah-wah just heart, fingers and deep pocket playing. Studio tight and clean. He was a race horse at this time in his life. Being shy in public groups he still was so mature and concise with his playing. So caring and giving with his time for each request. He was the Rick Beato of his day.... make em' learn something. Teacher spelling it out. b5's makes it eerie etc. He had up to 60 students at one time. This man was very important to music history. I hope future generations can still hear his playing, feel his timing and study his composing.
He can't release it sadly... it's a travesty. Sharon owns the rights to anything Randy did for Ozz and he offered to sell it the Osbourne family and they offered him peanuts and he turned them down. They should be ashamed of themselves but they have no shame. There's so many people who would love to hear and see all he has. The few clips on his site sound great but he's got a treasure trove of Randy's legacy and history... it's a bummer that there's such a slim chance we'll ever get to hear the Holy Grail.
I was 13 years old at the time and was lucky enough to be at this seminar in 1981. This took place at a small music store in Greensburg Pennsylvania a bout 30 miles away from Pittsburgh. This was a special event being the only seminar Randy ever did. He was known to look in the yellow pages and fine tune his classical chops on his down time in the town he was playing at the time. Truly a guitar giant and the world would be a better place with him in it.
He did teach quite a bit in Burbank and North Hollywood where his Mom taught when were teenagers. I always felt that he really enjoyed passing on what he knew to kids on their way up.
@Michael Bennett he was literally my introduction into hard rock. Think about the timeline we're talking about, 1982. Michael Jackson, the Knack. Thats what i was listening to before a cousin of mine gave me my first guitar. Oddly enough it was a white Gibson Les Paul Japanese copy that was identical to Randy Rhoades. I had a 1 speaker cassette player that had Crazy Train playing on a loop for about 3 months. As it turned out, one of the employees for this music store was in an up and coming powerhouse metal band called "Assassin "! He was also friends with the same cousin of mine that gave me that guitar. Keep in mind the Randy agreed to giving this Seminar basically about 3 hours before hand so its not like a hugely advertised or promoted event. So me and my cousin lived about 20 minutes from where the Seminar had taken place. He had got the call and was informed about 30 minutes before the start of it all so basically throw on a pair of shoes and get your asses movin! I cant remember exactly how long the Seminar lasted but 2 things that i do remember is that he left Greenburg and went directly to the Pittsburgh Civic Arena where Ozzy was playing just 2 hours later and the 2nd and saddest thing that i remember is that 3 weeks after that Seminar, Randy would be dead! Im not gonna pretend that i was in awe when i saw him that particular day BUT from that day on Randy Rhoades became a pivotal part of what shaped me into a guitar player for the next 38 years. When i look back on that day, truly one of the greatest days of my life. Oh and another thing that has always been in my memory since that day is how big Randy had become of a guitar giant, he stood there in front of me that day only about 2"taller than me being a skinny 13 year old kid. Truly amazing!
He did two that day. A morning seminar and an afternoon seminar. I was at the latter. So was Paul Gilbert not coincidentally.Ron Wlloschell's Music City. I wish someone could explain to me how in the hell Ron got Randy to come there and do two seminars before playing the same friggin night at the Civic Arena. Or was it the day before, I forget? Either way less than two months later he was gone.

I actually know the answer to your question. Ron was in a band out in California called Assassin on the verge of being signed in the late 78,79. He met and became friends with a couple of the guys from Quiet Riot, Randy being one of them. Assassin played the metal circuit in Cali and met Randy Rhodes in the process
Randy seemed to me to be a genuinely good person. My heart aches when I hear his voice. Just a sweet, patient, considerate soul.
He did not have the brash, insecure, ego-driven attitude that many of his contemporaries had.
He was a teacher and student. His Mother was a music teacher, as everyone here probably knows.
Sharon Osbourne said that "Randy had a great sense of humor and liked to have fun like most normal young men. But deep inside, Randy had an old soul, a very old soul." She meant that he was like a sage. He had a wisdom that was uncommon for a man so young. I think he got it from his Mom and from years of teaching his students.
Life can be awfully unfair sometimes. If fate had not been so cruel, Randy would have blossomed into an even more impressive person and musician.
He was around long enough to make one hell of an impact on tens of thousands of young players throughout the continents.

@Ken M, so so genuine wasn't he? Speaking about is attitude, he always told people how he got his sound or how he played something. I recently read that at one time he asked Eddie Van Halen how he got his tone and Ed responded "That's a secret" and that Randy seemed confused and dumbfounded because he always thought it was kind to share, and part of the reason he loved teaching. If you listen to how cordial he is when the audience members are asking questions, it's so evident what his spirit is all about. To share and learn. He is basically conducting a guitar lesson in this clinic. Class. Pure Class.

@Bruce S Randy would have won Eddie over. Eddie was a decent soul, although his insecurities often belied that fact. Randy had patience and maturity on his side. He was growing like holy-hell in the last year of his life. Eddie, God Bless him, had already shot his load. Randy was the forefather of progressive neo-classical metal. Eddie had NO INTEREST in this kind of thing. Eddie was just Eddie. Randy was the future. Eddie never realized that fact, but perhaps he never had to. Ed made his mark. Yngwie and all his clones would take it to a new level. Eddie/Randy influences that would give us, for better or for worse, the future of the genre's that they created. PEACE.
Randy is not just a guitar player, he's a true music composer.

Paul Gilbert’s dad took him to this event. This is where Paul was from and he said it was amazing that randy showed up in this little farm town.
I saw the 1st US tour with Motorhead here in Seattle at the Paramount Theater. I stood 15 feet in front of Randy for almost 2 hours and that changed my life.
Randy says he doesn't have a favorite guitar player. Says he likes anyone who's good. Talks up Leslie West, Michael Shanker, Richie Blackmore, even Eddie Van Halen.

I had stage fright so bad one time the guitar player had to start the song three times (I'm a drummer, this was like 1996) the beginning of "Suck My Kiss" it was really off beat, syncopated if you will and was relatively new to me since i wasn't much of a Chili Pepper fan at the time and had anxiety problems and really couldn't concentrate and my head was blank. Then it popped in and as soon as 10 seconds in the song i was fine from then on, on stage in the pub. That was very imbarrassing to say the least! Now? Hell that was 25 years ago i have a kit in my room and just play for fun with my headphones into this phone to songs. I'd like to play with a band again but every weekend type of thing at 55 i think i'm too old idk 😐

I can't believe it has been 40 years. I was 16 and at school when I heard the news over the radio. A very tragic day for me and millions of fans around the world. Randy was a one-of-a-kind musician that was a true student and master of his craft.

Looking at pics of Randy is like looking at a ghost or an angel or something. I think it's a mixture of his great talent, his pure & innocent looks and the fact that he died so young. It's sometimes hard to believe he was a real person.
I started playing guitar in 1981 and didn't know about Randy until a year or so after his death, so he's ALWAYS been like a ghost or a myth to me. (It's a beautiful myth though)

Yeah..I heard Crazy Train for the first time about a month before he died. Didn't know he was dead for about a year. News traveled more slowly in those days.

You're not the only one who feels like Randy was some kind of angel. I highly recommend the books out there on Randy. So much potential, such a tragic loss. I remember when I heard he had died. Luckily I got to see him twice with Ozzy.
Man, this is gold! I was fortunate to see Randy play with Ozzy 4 times before he passed and from the moment I first heard the Blizzard record, I was immediately a huge Randy fan, in fact, all of my friends were. When we heard Randy was killed in a plane crash, we drove around in my friend's van listening to a lot of Ozzy and grieving for his death, we were beyond bummed out, but hard to understand as 15-16 y/o kids. Later that night, when went into my garage and got a can of black Rust-OLeum spray paint, drove to our HS and painted LONG LIVE RANDY RHOADS on the front of the school. This became a big deal because they had to sand blast it off and the word was out that they were going to make the perpetrators pay for it and charge them with vandalism. Of course, all the hard rocker/metalheads were suspects, but the 4 of us swore ourselves to secrecy and to this day only the 4 of us knew who did it...well, and anyone reading this now lol. Out of all the artists and musicians that have passed away, Randy is the one we grieve for the most, he just meant so much to us as a guitar player, musician and just the person he was.

I had been a fan of Randy's after I heard and bought the Quiet Riot ll lp. His amazing playing is all over the first two Quiet Riot lps, even though the music was nowhere near what Ozzy's albums sounded like. They are hard to find but should be heard by any fan of Randy's.
@scottroberts7103 those first 2 QR albums were only released in Japan and are quite expensive. BUT...they have been re-released in "unofficial " colored vinyl and are very affordable!
Randy taught my teacher, and she always talks about how genuine he is. I picked up classical guitar because of him as well, thank you for your legacy, Randy!

Randy being a humanitarian a student and a teacher,gave so much to us all.
I read recently where he met Eddie Van Halen years ago and asked him how he stayed in tune without a locking nut and Eddie wouldn't tell him,as I sit here and listen to Randy give a public seminar.

I got to see Randy on March 17th 1982 in the Omni in Atlanta. Just 36 hours before he passed away. It was the best concert I ever went to. I couldn't believe it when I heard he passed away. It broke my heart. I was just learning how to play the guitar and I would sit in my room and listen to those two albums over and over again.

This is pure GOLD!!! Randy was an absolute musical genius, God rest his soul. I get chills when he goes over the different chords in Diary, and the riff that starts at 30:43 is IMO the most face melting riff in all of hard rock history! To this day I still get goosebumps when it comes up, never gets old. I’m so grateful for this !!

You can see Paul Gilbert in one of the phots. This tape circulated in the Pittsburgh area for years before it was on TH-cam. People thought it was a fake when I would play it for them until they would hear the playing.
Whoever put this out thank you so much for that. I grew up listening to Randy in the 80s. To me he is the greatest musician to ever play a guitar. Some of the choice sounds he has pick the scale he has put together and in the combination he did it he just absolutely Mozart, Bach, and Chopin, all put in one. We love you, Randy God bless man. Not to mention he’s is the cutest man on the face of this planet.

I've always loved his talent
When I was a teenager in the late 80’s Randy’s mystique was immeasurable. Nothing was available to the public. Just the little remnants here and there. I used to listen to Dee on the live album just so I could hear his voice to get some sort of feel for who he was as a person. I mean there was nothing available to the public! Then the internet became what it is today and there is soooo much out there now it’s incredible. I never thought for a million years what is out now would be right at my fingertips. He seems like such a genuine nice guy. And of course the talent was always there. Thank you for so many memories Randy. I hope you’re up there in heaven so we can meet when my time comes.

I could listen to him alone for hours. Sure wish this was the whole seminar but it's fantastic for what it is. It's sad that after all these years we still have so little footage of him.. though some new clips have come out. Sharon needs to release the film's she has from the Diary tour already. It's a travesty and a real shitty thing to do by not giving Randy all his due. Nothing would have made him happier than for all his fans to be able to see him tearin it up in all his glory on some full clear shows! Plus.. we're missing out on hours of recordings and film's that Bob Daisley has in the Holy Grail that's a treasure trove of Randy's memory. Him and Randy's brother would like to see it released..but Sharon put a stop to that! It'll take a miracle if we ever hear and see all Bob has! I can't think of another musician who deserves to be seen and heard more than Randy!! ✌️💜

If he was still around today, he would blow us away at the NAMM shows and imagine him playing on stage with G3' Satriani , Via and Randy Rhoads, etc.

I was fortunate enough to see Randy in 1981 Detroit. Back in the day before tabs it eye opening learning his stuff. His musical ability dwarfed Van Halen.

Leslie Thompson yes his playing is more fluid. Its very electric. I always like the fact he picked a lot more than tapped and climbs and scale work was great. He had great feel too. He had a great way of building solos. In addition he weaved a lot of licks in between his rhythms. He mentioned once that he starts his solo with a capital and ended them with an explanation point like a sentence.
ThumperOne I saw them both. It wasn't close. Imho. Tapping is over rated. I liked Randys tapping better than any tapping ever did. Eddie is great no doubt. The one Randy preferred was George Lynch. Eddies vocabulariry was limited imho. He dried up a long time ago. I wish We could have seen what Randy could do.

Wow! To hear Randy talk about this stuff is amazing. I never knew this was out there. Makes me wonder if anyone else has anything in a vault somewhere? I doubt it, but I can hope.
"I was in a local band in LA (with Rudy) before i met Ozzy" So strange to think there was a time before Quiet Riot was a household name.
One thing hearing Randy play on the album, truly GOLDEN hearing him speak and break down parts of songs to the people there, just hearing him go over what he did in this recording was simply mind blowing....thank you for having this on here

Words cannot describe how cool and humble Randy was I used to see him with Quiet Riot back in the day when he was coming up as a Guitar Hero all the while teaching guitar at Musonia his Mothers music school. He was all about Music not fame and fortune. He is truly missed...

So wish this was the whole seminar. I could listen to Randy alone for hours! Sad thing is..there is film of him on the Diary tour..but who knows if we'll ever see it. That's a whole story man. If you wanna see a few cool videos you've probably never seen I can point you to where they are. As well as if you wanna hear one of if not his best concerts from March 15,1982. It's a sick recording. His playing at that point was beyond the earlier shows..as great as they were.
@@mbass718 around March 15th I believe he had all his wisdom teeth pulled plus according to his mother he was very sick with a bad cold when he left for the 2nd leg of the diary tour....she told him remember to call me, when u get where u r so I know how you been feeling...she said she felt terrible about him having to go on tour with all that he really didn't want to go because he felt terrible.....dedication for sure rip randy
@@ArronP Serious dedication!! Maybe that's why the March 15th show in particular is so ferocious! When I heard it..I thought.. this was the show they should have released as the Tribute album! Rip... gone but certainly never forgotten.. which is beyond amazing for a guy who only put out two Albums. Not counting the Quiet Riot stuff.. cause I think he really came into his total greatness when he was free to compose and play anything he wanted to for Ozz. I lost all respect for Ozz cause of the way Bob and Lee and so many other musicians were treated..but most of all because they haven't honored Randy's legacy in the way he deserves to be honored imho... after all he did for Ozzy... and yeah Ozz did plenty for him too..but still..he deserves to be seen by the millions of people who wanna see him but can't cause Sharon won't release the shows she has which is just unforgivable to me.

He was just so sweet and boyish looking. It's hard to believe that it is almost 40 years since his death. I was just a 10-years-old imperishable little girl who had watched the news of his tragedy on "Good Morning, America". #sosadsopainful. RIP,Randy!!!!
Randy was gold. I just pray that ozzy takes care of the Rhoads family and helps Randy's moms school. Oz heard 1 min of Randy and knew this was the guy .

So grateful for this upload. You can hear the " teacher" in him as he explains the specifics of his playing to the members of the audience asking questions. I just saw a video with his older brother Kelle who said Randy had over time, about 60 students that he taught at his mom's music school Musonia in North Hollywood and that before he left for Ozzy he kept only 5 or 6 students. He wanted to pursue a master's in music, concentrating in classical guitar at UCLA, his mom's alma mater. What an amazing life, though tragically brief. His legacy lives on. RR forever. 🔥❤

So true, he was such a confident bad ass in his guitar abilities, he was never afraid to share info and technique, pretty rare in guitarist this good...what a special guy and yes, the world be a better place with him in it...we lost a lot of great music when he left us. RiP R.R.

I dare say that hearing Randy speak is to guitarists the equivalent of hearing Jesus. Randy was a kind, knowledgeable, person who wanted everyone to know what he was doing, but he was so great, nobody was as smooth and amazing as he was. I was 12 years old when my older brother brought home Blizzard of Oz and I had to start guitar and figure out those sounds and tones. We didn't have TH-cam then, we had to slow down the 33rpm records over & over again til we figured it out...Kids, the struggle was real!
This is such a gem. what an angel Randy was. My idol and inspiration.
We miss you Randy Rhoads. Your guitar playing lives on. I wish you had lived longer but I’m glad you were alive at some point and released great music. People are saying he looks like an angel but I would say for me it’s because he’s so soft spoken and humble. Plus the fact that he’s wearing all white with his cream Gibson Les Paul makes it seem like that to me. R.I.P Mr. Rhoads 👍🎸❤️

I'm sure this has been commented on but Paul Gilbert admitted to taking the day off from school to attend this clinic. Check out Nick Bowcotts Sweetwater video about Randy. It looks like young Paul standing behind another fan with Randy in the same shot. Pretty cool!!

I love these old interviews and watching the footage of RR playing he was such a genuinely nice and humble person he’s my all time favorite player and the reason I picked up the guitar I get really melancholy when listening to these

Unlike EVH, he doesn't mind showing and telling about his technique and theories. A true rock and roll guitar god. Sometimes it makes me angry he got on that damn airplane

Yes exactly evh was doing the whole smoke and mirrors hiding his riffs and technique's. While Randy would literally break it down and show his tricks and chord progressions. He also sounds very nervous during this and probably new that this was more of a meet and greet and ask questions instead of a actual lesson.

I remember a funny commercial where Tiger Woods was giving golfing tips. “I’ve been asked what a golfer should do if he slices a drive on a par 5 and lands in a bunker. Easy! Just pull out your 5 iron and hit a 250 yard shot to the green.” It’s funny because only a few people on the planet are good enough to do that.
Listening to Randy Rhoads explain his solos reminds me of that. “It’s really just an e minor scale,” then he plays a riff only a few guitarists in the world can play.

As those back then remember none of this music was aired on radio. Us fans would have to buy the records/ cassettes or go to the concerts. Headbangers ball MTV was all there was. Nothing like today where you can look up and find anything or anyone. Remember hearing when he died and it just burned through me as a fan. What a GREAT GUY!!
I cant believe how good Randy Rhoads was especially at the young age of 25 and even younger because you know he was not just all of a sudden playing that good, he had such a cool style almost crying so emotional no wonder Ozzy wanted Randy he was never egotistic at all and i heard he would go to local music stores and actually take lessons from local music teachers and he said you never know what you can learn from people that arent even famous the dude was Destined to make it because he was a musicians musician it seems like i learn something new every time i listen to Randy, and diary of a mad man is a masterpiece and will go down in history as just that, R.I.P Randy Rhoads you are an extreme legend and will never be forgotten.

nope no wah-wah just heart, fingers and deep pocket playing. Studio tight and clean. He was a race horse at this time in his life. Being shy in public groups he still was so mature and concise with his playing. So caring and giving with his time for each request. He was the Rick Beato of his day.... make em' learn something. Teacher spelling it out. b5's makes it eerie etc. He had up to 60 students at one time.
This man was very important to music history. I hope future generations can still hear his playing, feel his timing and study his composing.
I've loved Randy since I first heard him when I was 6, 22 years later it's so surreal hearing his voice for the first time.

He can't release it sadly... it's a travesty. Sharon owns the rights to anything Randy did for Ozz and he offered to sell it the Osbourne family and they offered him peanuts and he turned them down. They should be ashamed of themselves but they have no shame. There's so many people who would love to hear and see all he has. The few clips on his site sound great but he's got a treasure trove of Randy's legacy and history... it's a bummer that there's such a slim chance we'll ever get to hear the Holy Grail.
