  • (30 Mar 1970) Movietone takes a long look at Japan's astonishing Expo '70 near Osaka - the greatest world exposition every held. Join us on a tour of the major pavilions - spectacular in design and as different as the 79 nations taking part. The British Pavilion visited by Japanese Royalty gives scenes of this country at work and play. Monorail trains, moving sidewalks, observation gondolas provided to ease the strain of walking round the 800 acre site. A futuristic fun-fair to thrill both children and adults. It would take a week to see everything - but a tour of Expo '70 is a trip round the world.

Loved the pixels above the video. Anyone cares to explain their origins or purpose?

I'm not certain either, but my best guess is that those might be closed captioning lines. Essentially, old TV and video would have closed captioning data placed on a set of lines which would normally be hidden in regular viewing. I guess they might have taken this off a videotape or something which enabled this & left the data open to viewing? Seems odd to me why they would be left in, or that it would even exist in the first place, considering closed captioning didn't fully come about until the end of the decade this was made.
