  • Sylvia Anderson is interviewed by Tim Vincent on Blue Peter (TX 13/9/1995) and promotes the Phillips "Toys & Dolls" auction where her original puppets and much more were to be sold the following week. CRINGE as Sylvia demonstrates she doesn't remember how to operate the puppets' eyes! SCREAM as Bonnie the dog nearly knocks over Father Unwin and Marina!

    It is sad that these original puppets did not end up in a museum - they were part of the history of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's productions, part of our history of television. Thank you for the memories, Ciao, L

      Sylvia’s Lady Penelope, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90 puppets were actually in the Museum of the Moving Image for several years prior to this auction.

      Hi, thank you for the info - what happened, why were they auctioned? I remember when Supercar came out in 1960, it was such a change of paradigm in marionettes. Later, i wrote to the BBC (Stingray time) and Sylvia Anderson send me a letter, encouraging me to pursue my studies and become a submariner or a pilot (which I was dreaming of at the time). She also wrote to me in the early 2000, after I had thanked her for orienting my career (Naval Officer) with their shows. An entire Baby Boomer generation grew up watching these marvels, Thank you for your answer, Ciao, L (USA)

      I think she said she wanted to "move on", and I'm sure the money was nice! A number of the other puppet heads in the auction (from Mary Turner's collection) have been lovingly restored and given new bodies & costumes, and occasionally appear in displays in the UK.

    They didn't mention Father Unwin at all and he was with the other puppets. It is a shame The Secret Service isn't as well-remembered and that it wasn't shown in many ITV regions.

      Secret Service is my favourite. I wish they'd made more. It seemed less like it was desperately trying to court American money than the other series, and just seemed content to be a very odd, very English little television programme. I love it

    I just loved Marina’a puppet, she was beautiful to look at, and Sylvia’s voice in Thunderbirds was truly classy, such a shame that the Anderson’s are now dead.

    • @mostspecialagent

      The real shame is that many of the items in that auction have disappeared into private collections, never to be seen again. There are some collectors who do exhibit at events such as RAF Cosford's 'Flights of Fantasy' and "The FAB Worlds of Anderson' at the National Space Centre.

    I say...awfully chivalrous of Virgil to protect Lady Penelope by merely laying a plastic hand over her equally plastic but finely sculptured face!

    I think you might be mistaking the four Professor McClaine heads from Joe 90 for Captain Blue. I can't see Blue on display there at all.

    • @mostspecialagent
      @mostspecialagent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They were worth a fortune even then, certainly those complete puppets went for an awful lot of money. But like all things collectable, they’re only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for them. It’s just a shame that so many of the heads that appeared in the auction have not been seen since.

    • @mostspecialagent
      @mostspecialagent  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No dedicated museum, but there are a few artefacts in some places like The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. However there are often exhibitions by groups of collectors featuring original and replica puppets, craft, props and costumes. The National Space Centre in Leicester has held exhibitions in the last couple of years.

    They're NOT Puppets!, they're marionettes!

    • @mostspecialagent
      @mostspecialagent  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A marionette is a puppet, but not all of the puppets were marionettes. Certain heads were never strung and only ever operated from underneath.
