Love that this channel embraces trad climbing , history and characters that shape the magic of climbing and it's not all about indoor walls and strong kids dynoing or running across volumes, Keep it up guys fantastic work as always.
@@aeodian Some climbing areas are known to have ratings that belie the true difficulty of the climbs that are found there. It's called "sandbagging". The first ascentionist for a given climb assigns it a rating. To sandbag is to assign a rating that is "too low" for the actual difficulty. Joshua Tree, where they are climbing, is known for having sandbagged ratings. So, when Mason rates it at 5.11a (I think it was) that suggests the climb is relatively easy by modern standards, even though it was likely more challenging than that.
Met Mason at the Desert rocks gym. He was super chill and willing to help me, super athlete helping a noob...lol...so cool. Didn't connect it until this video came out, then I remembered the Cracking Cobra film. Climbers have been the best, chill and real community ever.
I've been bingeing lots of your other mini-documentary videos, they're SO GOOD! Been looking forward to this one for a while, definitely up there with the best of your vids and the best climbing vids on youtube. Keep it up!
great video and really looking forward to part 2. not only is the climbing amazing, as well as Mason of course, but really like the style in which you put these vids together! great stuff.
first time on your channel and I got completely hooked. subscribed and can't wait for part 2. cheers and thank you for this piece of art, it was brilliant to watch.
Great video! But can someone tell me how he got his protection pieces out? Or how one would do that if you cannot top out? Especially for the top piece
At 8:39 he asks “going straight for the lead huh?” It makes it sound like you could set a top rope. From there that’s one way you could clean your gear.
That's a good question. Part of what was so impressive about watching Mason on this route was how pro he was with everything, including the gear. When done he would sort of aid climb with one cam up to the high one and then remove that. Then aid climb down by hanging on a cam till he was back on the ground and could reach his last piece.
I was fishing out there last month and decided to do some hiking, I saw that monster OW and had wondered if it had been climbed, I didn't even know there was good rock out at minister so I didn't bring my rack or rope. You won't find info on most Allegheny crags, there are a few hidden gems in the ANF, but you have to get the guidebooks directly from someone.

you have the best voice of anyone on TH-cam. hands down.

Thanks so much!
Hope to see Mason get better soon
What happened to him?
@@SileDevil he's got some fatigue disease
I love watching this madman climb.
"Its harder and harder to find ass kickings these days" has got to be one of the most bad ass quotes of all time.
And it's so true. When you are Mason's caliber, finding a crack that is humanely possible but hard enough not to do first try is soooo rare.
"There's a long history of wide crack sandbagging that we have to adhere to."
😂😆
Absolutely
what does that mean?
aeodion There’s a pretty strong history of people grading offwidth climbs a bit lightly, so it’s harder than the grade suggests.

"Earl Struggs". Awesome banjo pun thrown in there
yeah! Mason said he's been holding that name for awhile. Perfect fit for this route for sure.
Brilliant film. I especially like the commentary. I do a similar vlog based in the UK and you’ve really inspired me. Thanks man.

Go climb "Jonah" at minister creek, Allegheny national forest PA.
I'd love to hear what you think!
Sounds cool! I looked it up online but couldn't find any info. Any chance you have a link to a pic or mountain project?

Good story telling.
Is part 2 ever going to drop? What is the hold up?
It's gonna drop! I'm halfway through it now but work keeps pulling me away :( Really hope to have it done in next week or two.
@@GiantRock Awesome! Can't wait!
I wanna see Mason slay routes and jam out with Nico Favresse! They would make an incredible team.
Date of part 2?
Who's stoked on his old Granstones that are out if production??
Is this a closed proj or could one possible get then location?
He sent it! Part 2 with the send coming soon. Dm on instagram and I'll drop you a pin if ur interested in trying it.

This was filmed in 2018. My mistake for not making that clear in the vid.

Anyone else want to look closer at the little seam right up the middle of the face?
What a disgrace that this hortible disease took one of the best rock climbers out of the active world! We need awareness and research for ME/CFS!!!

Too many ads in this video
Mason is a guy !!!!!!
Be my trad daddy
Is this parody, or is this guy actually that narcissistic?
Great climbing. Annoying narrator who doesn't know anything about climbing.
