Contactless has been pretty unpopular since it's introduction when compared to the Oyster card, which is no surprise considering that people are naturally suspicious when something like TFL gets hold of your bank details. I've been using an oyster card since I was 10 and I have never had a problem with either the under 16's oyster or the 16+ one :)
If you enter the underground system with contactless and exit to a station that doesn't have contactless (Waterloo to Staines for instance) = FREE TRAVEL Yay!
If I use my contactless credit card do I tap in before getting on and tap out when exiting? Does it work the same on buses and river boats? Tap in and out? Thanks in advance.
Note: The TfL website to connect your Oyster Card to your bank account has been broken FOR A MONTH. When I log in and try to add a card I get this page oyster.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-oyster/error.shtml I called the assistance number and the agents themselves can't access the system. In addition, when you CAN get into the site, it only allows auto top-up via a UK bank card, it does not support foreign cards.
I'll be going next month for 5 days. Seems like contactless card added to my oyster account route for me. I won't be missing out on any benefits with oyster card correct? I got a Zip card for my kids. I know I don't need it but they'll have fun using it and it's a good souvenir for them.
well since im not in the oyster zone, i still like a good ol' fashoned paper ticket for £6.75 however it does have its downfalls such as not being able to be used outside zone 6. but hey im not going outside zone 6 often anyway
+Kirkinstein I think that on this issue it is whatever works best for you. As you can see from the video it's quite confusing so you have to do whats right for you!
Doesn't the Oyster card have some discounts other places? Like museums and shops. I am not sure if you get that with contactless. Besides that I would prefer contactless. Because you don't have the stress with getting back the deposit when leaving London (at train/bus station). My new credit card have the possibility for contactless. I got it because my old was skimmed in either London or Berlin on my last trip...
Apple Pay & Google Pay both cap the same way as a contactless card would, provided that you are consistent in using the same device for the whole day / week. If you use the app for one journey, and the actual card for another, the system sees them as 2 separate, unrelated card numbers & tracks them separately.
Hi I live in West Sussex, for a days travel around London would I be better off buying a return ticket to Victoria then using my contactless card, rather then a paper travel card?
Hi there, I would say buy the ticket to Victoria & then use your contactless as it will cap your travel at then end of your London journeys so no need for a travel card.
I am a student and I want to go with pay-as-you-go. Which card should I go with? Oyster card charges one-third of the fare for students. does the contactless do the same?
You said basically only American Express can be used on London underground. Did you notice it was visa that you keep showing? It's important because some people have visa and not American Express.
Hello - If you could guide me. During my visit to UK In May 2016 i should be in London for about 5 to max 6 days. 2 adults and a 5 year old child for a reasonable amount of travelling between locations and places of interest 1. Do I need to buy separate oyster cards for all 3 of us 2. How much should i approx top the credit in the card for the 5-6 days for 3 of us If you could let me know please. thank you.
+Cyrus Loves India Hello, of course we can guide you - that's what we're here for ;-) 1. Children aged five to 10 can travel free at any time by Tube, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail services in London (where pay as you go is accepted), as long as they travel with an adult who has a valid ticket (up to four children can travel free with one adult) 2. Start of with £50 & see how you go. You can always re-top up online or at a ticket machine once you're here. Let us know if you have any more questions & enjoy London!
+Cyrus Loves India Only one Oyster card can be used per person per journey. That means if you are travelling in a group, each person will have to use a separate Oyster card. Enjoy London!
So when you say a foreign exchange fee for contactless, are you saying the system charges a fee? Or are you referring to fees charged by the card issuer for using it abroad?
I’m in London for 2 days and will be needing the tube a lot in those 2 days both day and night tube(night tube only 1 day) , which would be best for me a travel card or my Visa card? Or shall I get a travel card for one day? Do the travel cards work on the night tube? Please help. Thanks x
Travelcards work on night services, but I wouldn't recommend buying a 1 day travelcard if you have Oyster or contactless as an option. The daily cap for "pay as you go" is cheaper than the cost of a daily travelcard for the same zones. If your tube travel stays within zones 1-3, for example, the PAYG cap is £8, compared to £12.70 for a 1 day zone 1-3 travelcard.
I am lucky I have a zip oyster for 11-15 so buses are free and tube fares only charge me £1.50 to go from NW London to central London and back and about 75-80p if I am travelling a few stops(it depends)
Hi sir, Can u please tell me in which zone are deze places located?southall broadway, london eye& bridge, greenstreet(eastham)?im going to stay for 3days in london & will be taking tube, tram metro bus... Which card wiuld u recommend me?thank you 😊
+Johan 200011 Hello, Southall Broadway is not on the tube, but you can get a train from Southall Broadway to Paddington. The London Eye & Bridge are in zone 1 on the tube & is on the Northern & Jubilee lines. East Ham is in zone 3 & is on the District & Hammersmith & City lines. I would recommend buying an Oyster card in advance which you can use on all of these lines.
Love these videos you do Informative and entertaining at the same time. I was in London 5 years ago and never knew any of this. It would have been helpful then. Now I watch wishing I could visit again (I'm in Canada, so a loong way to travel to see England again). I shall armchair travel via some of the videos on TH-cam until I can revisit England :) I've seen in some of the comments something about zones. Has a video been done explaining what that means? Is it zones are like boroughs or areas (amount of city blocks from x north/south to z east/west) or postal code sort of thing??
I'm sticking with paper travelcards or unregistered Oyster pay-as-you-go. I don't like the idea of TfL and people having my bank details or spying on where I travel. Big Brother is getting closer, it's what the powers-that-be want...
They have ways of forcing you to use the payment system they want. Remember when Oyster cards were introduced and the price of buying a ticket went up dramatically? The next thing we know, it's suddenly going to start being usuriously expensive using unregistered Oyster cards, and cheaper using contactless.
You're right. They have announcements "why not use contactless today?" If your overcharged or go into the red with Oyster, you'll notice easily. Contactless doesn't run out so your less likely to notice mistakes until it's too late to query it. TfL therefore profit from it. It's a scam!
How did you just make an oystercard video genuinely entertaining??😂💛
You are literally one of the best public speakers ive seen
+The Real Donald Trump Thank you! What a lovely thing to say :-)

I watched a 5 minute video about London’s transport payment situation - and i loved it

Yes, I'm gonna need that extra money for my books. They're pretty expensive - it all adds up!
Tell me about it
@@cityhacksLondon where are you you haven't have a video in a long time
Obviously it's arsenal,black cabs,the tube, and contactless

Oyster
+LUDDYPLAYS haha
+city hacks London i AM an arsenal fan so ya these things are great!
You missed out the bit about added a national rail card to a oyster to save money on overground and non tfl lines.
Good point. Thank you for letting us know. Hopefully people will pick this up in the comment section!
16+ Oyster FTW, i'm outside London but it's so much cheaper to get a ticket to the first Zone 7 station then touch in PAYG
Ahhhh. Good to know!
I prefer oyster as it is pay as you go, that way I won't overspend as I have a limit
+Ben Wyatt that makes sense!
True
You get a £20 cap a day on Contactless

As I only visit London once or twice a year I use contactless
i need to use oyster anyway; 11-15 child zip oyster.
Lucky you. I'm too old now ;-(
haha lol i use 11-15 as well its such a discount i mean 75p wow
@HackingSpartan or a contactless bank card or a paper ticket

Oyster is the winner👍🏽Thanks for the awesome video!
How to pay with contactless both for me and my wife from same card?

I love using Apple Pay
Me too!

The contactless payment should be debit card or credit card can be use for any transportation ? Thanks
hi I'm travelling down next week, there will be 2 adults and 1, seven year old child. Can we all travel with one contactless card (mine)
+Joe Clarke the two adults will both need to travel on separate Oyster/Contactless cards but the child can travel on one of them for free
Doesn't the Oyster card have some discounts other places? Like museums and shops. I am not sure if you get that with contactless.

Yes I think the Oyster card may have some offers. Always worth having a Google. I use my contactless card all the time now ;-) Syrus
I live in Hawaii where a bus pass is a buss pass for a set price. This is so unnecessary complicated
Travel in and around London is a lot more complicated than any get on, get off bus route in Hawaii.
Does the weekly cap on contactless include buses same like the oyster travel card does?
I just use a Zip card to get to school soo I'm fine for now
Good for you Shaw. Syrus might not get away with that :-)
Does Apple Pay have daily capping ? Some say yes some say no so I’m asking a reliable source
Apple Pay & Google Pay both cap the same way as a contactless card would, provided that you are consistent in using the same device for the whole day / week. If you use the app for one journey, and the actual card for another, the system sees them as 2 separate, unrelated card numbers & tracks them separately.

Hi there, I would say buy the ticket to Victoria & then use your contactless as it will cap your travel at then end of your London journeys so no need for a travel card.
Cheapest option is a paper rail Travelcard including the train and underground by far.
Thanks for your help.
Do railcard discounts apply to pre purchased travel cards>
Not as far as I know.......but do check on the Oyster Card website. Syrus ;-)
Oyster is supreme, obviously .
