When Sonny was here in AZ w the YavCo charter I played several shows for him , his anniversaries, and his birthdays before he went back to Oakland. He was always very gracious to me and loved my old school country music I play w my band. He definitely had an amazing presence, a Born leader and cool dude.

If I were to build a Mt. Rushmore of influential bikers, I would have to add David Mann to it. As I was growing up I cant remember not walking in to the home of friends or family members and not seeing at least 1 of his pieces of art. His art work painted a real picture of the motorcycle culture. May he Rest in Peace.

I was fortunate enough to have been one of the lawyers for The Grateful Dead for around 13 years in the 80’s & 90’s. That relationship introduced me to the Oakland HA & Sonny through their pre-existing relationship with The Dead (HA were Security at Altamonte etc).
Sonny has always been a heavy weight in the Biker World. It doesn’t take too long to figure that out. I remember his retirement run to Arizona through LA.

Growing up in the East Bay down the road from Oakland in 60's, we all knew who Sonny Barger was and the Hells Angles. We chopped our Schwinn Stingray's and made cuts out of our t-shirts and rode around town like badasses. Our parents were horrified and put a stop to that. Funny looking back. Good times.

Sonny is a huge influence on the lifestyle and deserves hella respect. His life story speaks for itself. David Mann and his paintings of the lifestyle have influenced countless people. He didn't just paint it though, he lived it. This i know is a personal thing but my dad is one to me. He started a MC right after getting back from Nam. It's still together after 50 years. My dad and 2 other people had embraced the culture and had enough influence to bring another 100 club brothers along. It's not easy being president and dealing with MC politics and keeping 100 other like minded individuals in line. When I say in line I mean out of jail, sometimes even keeping them alive but always from fucking up. The photographers that were around taking black and white photos in the 50s and 60s were heavily influential to me. Those biker photos from some of the older clubs are just the fucking coolest ever. They truly bring out something inside and absolutely make you want to get on a bike. The people taking those photos then had no idea how important they are now by showing where it started.

Great vid Sose. I read(listened on Audible) Sonny’s book and it was eye opening for sure. You’ll definitely learn from one of the founding fathers. But you asked about Heavy Weights…you did a vid on Robert Patrick of the Boozefighters Ch.101 but have you read up on the founder of the Boozefighters? Wino Willy Forkner was one of the founders and in my opinion one of the first cultural icons. The article about 99% vs 1% of motorcycle enthusiasts was written after the Hollister “riots” in 1947. Wino was not allowed to enter the races because they had partaken in a few drinks so they began racing up and down the streets of Hollister. There’s a lot more to it but it’s a good read I assure you. Unfortunately Wino passed in 1997 but to me I feel he was and will always be the original outlaw before there was such a thing.

Most deff Sonny is a legend,we have 3 of his last few books,1 is autographed. Also at a book signing I got to bond w/Sonny for about 5mins over horses & get a picture w/him. One thing I learned from his books is when you have an important meeting to always be prepared. Itz always hard to get to speak or get a photo w/him cause he is usually surrounded by ppl waiting to greet him. A few yrs ago i was at 1 of his big B'day parties, that same wkend the Blue Angels were in SF for their yearly air show & flew over the club house in Oakland. In all the years I've lived in SF which is most of my life I've never seen the Blue Angels fly over Oakland,I believe that was for Sonny. L&R #WeGhostN

I have watched a variety of your videos the last couple of days. Not really binging, but maybe the next step down. It has been very educational, and I even subscribed to the channel. I knew a little about the biker culture, but admittedly most of what I knew came from biased sources. I have also known quite a few bikers through the years, some of true stand up people.
Most of my contact came when I worked a small convenient store right across the street from a biker bar in Roseburg, Oregon. That was a little over 30 years ago, I rather miss those days.

Ghostin. I got to meet a talk with Sonny at West Coast Internation Motorcycle Show. Not for very long because like in this picture, he was surrounded by many! Naturally he wanted to know about my bike? My 86' Yamaha Venture Royale just placed 3rd out of 168 bike show in Washington, so I was invited to show bike in this motor cycle show! (They gave each bike entered in show a limited printed poster of Marlon Brandon on bike with trophy tied too handlebars!)(I still have it, haha!) Enjoy visit with Sonny!

def a legend I liked how sonny was a good mechanic and would make sure his clubs bikes were tip top before a big run Sonny never lost site of the bikes n the rides i always went with the Fxr or FXD cause of Sonny a simple easy bike to manuever it can keep up with dressers n fast bikes but I can jump a curb and skid without dropping like a sportster and I can chop it up a little while keeping it practical for longer rides..

Some inspiration for the ladies...Bessie Stringfield, first black woman to ride solo across the U.S. on a Harley...in 1930-40s ! And this guy, Dave Barr, holds the distinction of being: the first person to have ridden a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle around the world, (across Europe, Russia, and Siberia in the dead of winter) He also served in active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and also served in the armed forces of three other nations. He's also a double amputee. Thats a heavy weight !

I would say Tobie Gene Levingston. The East Bay Dragons MC are exclusive to Oakland. However, everyone from the East Coast all the way to Japan know who they are. That's a sign of a strong reputation.
As far as a bike builder, I recommend the OG from South Central (apologies, I can't recall his name) who started the raked out chopper craze. Choppers are synonymous with biker culture. He and the black biker set still doesn't get the recognition they deserve. If someone in the comments knows who I'm talking about please reply with his name. I believe his son has carried the tradition too if I'm not mistaken.
Keep pumping out the content. This is real deal biker education.

To each their own. I remember a show that never made it to DVD but I can't remember the name of it. But it's about a small town that has a motorcycle rally and it put a positive spin on the culture. Hell no wonder it didn't make it far. ML&MR to me I remember Hulk as a kid myself. So I guess that just means that I ran with the cool kids. Too bad they stopped making them like they used to. 😪

The ones who got me to ride were the people in my fathers circle not all were in same club but allied clubs and even though almost none of them ride today it got me into the lifestyle by growing up around them. All of them old men now so even those who still ride are not wild no more. One of them was nicknamed Red Beard and was president of the club who has the best ties to the club my father rode with. So when I see a Harley I always see my father with his best friend the giant with a huge red beard and long hair.

No disrespect to Sony Barger without there wouldn't be a lot of clubs, we wouldn't get to do a lot of what we do. However as a leader I think George Christie was a smarter more strategic leader whereas Barger shoots 1st then ask questions. Sony is a hammer and Christie is a scalpel. Both legends in the MC World.

I still think David Allen Coe would be a good one to do a piece on. He is a VERY famous old school country star AND a member of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club and has influenced many good ol boys from the south to hop on 2’s and join clubs.
Another good one I would think would be Brantley Gilbert. He is also a famous country star and has been seen wearing outlaw support gear in photos. I don’t know if he was or is a member, but I’m sure with a little digging you could find out. He rides Harley-Davidson motorcycles in many of his videos too

Sonny was the reason why I had started my road to the MC community. When I was 8 yrs old I took a sharpie and drew his clubs name on an old denim jacket and road my bicycle up and down the road flying free. Sonny is a legend and should be given the upmost respect for all of his time and effort in building the most Prestigious club in the world. Thank you Sonny for what you have done for the birth of so many clubs that aspire to be as the club you have built. And for so many others that accompanied you on that path and helped bring up the club to what it is today.
