While it is "fantasy" as opposed to true authentic Polynesian, I feel that's a bit of an oversimplification, as if to say that it was simply a mockery or "White people pretending to be Polynesian", That would be inaccurate, as the influence from actual Polynesian and Asian musicians can't be denied. It's a multicultural hodge-podge made for White people sure, but it's not racist mockery like a minstrel show or anything. If anything the people complaining about it now and the people who probably complained about it back then are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Nowadays the more progressive people complain about it for "cultural appropriation" but back then the more conservative people probably complained about it for "celebrating those backwards savages". It brought attention to cultures and parts of the world that otherwise would have probably been ignored.
Absolutely perfectly said. I fully agree, especially your final sentence. And probably not too surprising, but I did actually have a person complaining in the comments about it being offensive.
A fantastic question there, Tom. My favorite drink is the Midori Sour. Not tiki, but it's pretty much my go-to anywhere. And sure, it's a hair weak. But after 3 or 4, I feel pretty good.

@@AtomicSnackBarit makes a great background soundtrack to certain scenes in, say, American Psycho. Hip to be Square was a wasted opportunity
@@haitch2676 You know, I think I've only seen that one once. I don't remember much about the music.
@@AtomicSnackBarlet’s just say, Exotica would have improved an already seminal classic
@@haitch2676 Gotcha. But that's safe to safe about anything. A little Arthur Lyman in Lord of the Rings? Yes. Yes indeed.
Man oooh man, thank you so much for making this video honoring Exotica/tiki music. I really enjoy it myself, it just sounds like tropical paradise ! Les Baxter and Martin Denny were indeed the greats of the genre.
More recently, there's a group called the Tikiyaki Orchestra that makes great music, maybe youve heard of them. It makes you feel like you're soaking up the sunshine on a beautiful white sand beach in Hawaii.
Oh no, I sure hadn't heard of Tikiyaki Orchestra. But that sounds most excellent. I'm going to look them up right now.
Thanks for the tip. And for watching.
@@AtomicSnackBar I'm surprised that they weren't famous at all... hope you'll enjoy their songs.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 They were great. I even bookmarked their website with the intention of picking up some of their stuff later on. Too bad I missed out on seeing them play when I still lived in L.A.
Thanks again for the suggestion.
Thanks for this wonderful video on Exotica music
Thank you much for watching it, Davie. It's something I quite enjoy.
Welcome
Lovely stuff. Not music for me - although I do listen to a bit of Perez Prado now and again; not the same, I know, but it is nice to have music that makes you smile and whisks you off to a different place. You've really helped a lot of people find their groove - well done sir. Another type of 'lounge music' can be found on 70s movie soundtracks - Lalo Schiffrin springs to mind also the theme to Sanford and Sons - I only know this because I have a cd called Lounge Lizard - we never got Sanford in the UK.
I don't know, Jason. They might revoke your membership into the Hawaiian shirt club on this one. I will contact the Tiki council on your behalf though. I will battle for you, fear not. But I only have so much pull after that whole debacle on Easter Island.
@@AtomicSnackBar I'm off to the sea-side for a long weekend - so I won't see your next vid until I get back (no mobile). It's pretty sunny here at long last - been a rainy summer - so some nice walks on the beach, greasy food and gallons of beer.
@@wetdog1606 Sounds like a plan. Just wear your best Hawaiian shirt and I'll be there with you in spirit.

Nice! Now I have to find some of these albums. Probably good to listen to while I write the next book.
They are fantastic for such things. I also enjoy them during my most sophisticated baths.
Cool. Thanks.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Interesting, the music is similar to Calipso and Muzak.
A good point, Cesar. There is definitely some similarities to Calypso, which I also like. Exotica could almost be the instrumental version of it.
I thought the title said An Introduction to Erotica, so I thought , it was going to be , a different kind of video.
But still an interesting video,
As a soundtrack fan, I was a fan of Les Baxter. Based on your recommendation, I picked up The Arthur Lymon Group’s “Totally Taboo” CD. I listened to it this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for the video! On to Martin Denny!
Fantastic. That is awesome to hear. And even more so that you dug it. Small coincidence here too. Just last night I was taking some notes on "The Bride and the Beast" for a future episode. Much to my surprise, I noticed that Les Baxter did the soundtrack.
@@AtomicSnackBar Cool! I have that on DVD but haven’t gotten around to watching it. I’ve seen the “Trailers from Hell” with John Landis doing commentary on the trailer, but I didn’t know Baxter did the score.
@@vksjd Well, expect my full coverage on it in the near to distant-near future.
@@AtomicSnackBar l'm looking forward to it.
While it is "fantasy" as opposed to true authentic Polynesian, I feel that's a bit of an oversimplification, as if to say that it was simply a mockery or "White people pretending to be Polynesian",
That would be inaccurate, as the influence from actual Polynesian and Asian musicians can't be denied.
And probably not too surprising, but I did actually have a person complaining in the comments about it being offensive.
that's so interesting, I might have to listen to tikki playlists. Do you have a fav tikki drink?
A fantastic question there, Tom. My favorite drink is the Midori Sour. Not tiki, but it's pretty much my go-to anywhere. And sure, it's a hair weak. But after 3 or 4, I feel pretty good.
I have a question. What (if anything) differentiates Exotica from Space Age Batchelor music?
An excellent question. I'd say the two are pretty similar, just with a different focus. Exotica using more tropical sounds, Space Age pop using more electronics.
I LOVE Les Baxter, I am so excited to find other people who know about him.
Always good to run across another exotica fan. Do you have a favorite album by Les?
Space Escapade, that is the one I remember my Dad having when I was a kid, though I'm sure he has others. But that cover art....I am very much a retro scifi girl!
@@AtomicSnackBar
@@kellswitch That is hands down one of my favorite album covers of all time. I may have even mentioned it in the video, I forget. But if anything has ever captured my ideal aesthetic, it's Space Escapade.
I wanna get into it, to be honest it gives me a nostalgia at a brief listening. In my mind i imagine being at night on Brazil, Baja California Sur or Hawaii coasts.
I can totally see that. I often makes me think of visiting tiki bars whilst on vacation. Or just enjoying a fruity drink by the ocean or pool. Lots of a great places to start here.
Thanks for checking it out, Matthew.
Tiki Bar Music love it
Really wonderful stuff.
Thanks for watching, Jim.
I'm not so sure. This seems a little too funky and awesome for the likes of me. Maybe include Smelly Cat to the soundtrack.
No Exotica for you. Move along. Though may I interest you in a corner of shame?
I just told my wife "of course I know what Exotica music is" Thanks TH-cam!
Glad to be at least partially of service.
Apparently I cannot add them here. Is there another space to upload them to?
Are you on Twitter? That's my main social media type stomping ground. I have an Instagram, but rarely use it.
Ok ..now I’m gonna be playing only Exotica music
Sounds like the right decision to me.

odd question for you: How do you promote your videos?
Not very well, I'm afraid. I post about them on twitter, but they get don't get very views from there. The bulk of my traffic comes from within YT itself. I've studied the algorithm quite a bit and have learned a few things.
