    Pro-tip-if you remove the grip it removes like a good chunk of the weight and even though you don't have a group to hold it with anymore you can just hold it by the grips on the film back. I know that it sounds like it won't make that big of a difference but it really makes a huge difference.

    I’d much rather struggle with inferior Mamiya Universal than an over-priced 7. To me, photography is about struggle, imperfections and failure. Far more interesting than “advanced” cameras.

      A camera like this is luxurious coming from manual advance TLRs and big cameras. I think not too hard if you can practice without film, to build a habit of routine, that way advancing the roll becomes muscle memory.

    It's a good idea to replace the light seals on the Mamiya Press backs if they are old.

      Whenever you buy an old, used camera like these, it's a good idea to budget a full CLA if you plan to rely on it. In my "do as I say, not as I did" dept, I offer a dawn trip involving several miles of hiking to the north rim of the Grand Canyon one fall morning. Shooting a monorail MF view camera, and my lens of choice being one I almost never used and had not serviced, in the freezing temperature, my shutter started to freeze open at each exposure. My solution of the moment to bulb the shutter open with tiny aperture and use my hat to time the exposure proved a disaster.

    Look also into the Koni-Omega Rapid-M. It’s also a 6x7 in the same vein. I have one.
    The Rapid was meant for press use. The emphasis was on fast film advance. It operates like a bolt action rifle. Literally.

  • @randallstewart1224
    @randallstewart1224 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Mamiya had this series of cameras, the Universal Press, Press 23, Press Super 23. Compared to the later Mamiya 7 series, they are not as integrated, so the user has to separately do more steps with the operation to take a photo, and these models have no internal light metering. The Mamiya lenses from this era were at best average, not the cutting edge lenses for the later 6 and 7 models, but in the real world of how the images are being used today, the difference is not significant. These are lot more fussy and slower to use, but they all have mid-roll interchangeable film backs, lacking in the 6 and 7 cameras. These are mostly metal, so heavier than the 7, but not oppressively so. Finally, the bodies and lenses cost about one-tenth the price of a used 7 and are much less likely to break down.. A much more modern for its time and well integrated alternative to these early Mamiyas is the Koni Omega series of cameras, which lack metering but otherwise are much more like the later Mamiya 7 than these. Konica sold the rights and manufacturing of the Omega to Mamiya after s few years, and Mamiya continued to make it into the mid-1970s. (Giving it some insight into ways and means of making this style of camera when looking a the 6 and 7 some 20 years later.)

    Decades ago, there were two Mamiya Universal 6X7cm medium format cameras with lens in a large photographic lot that I purchased. At the time, I was using Mamiya TLR 6x6cm medium format cameras for shooting weddings and portraits. Since I did not see the need for the larger and bulkier camera, I sold them and kept the items in the lot that I wanted. However, when I finally needed to replace my worn out TLR wedding cameras, I replaced them with 6x7 and 6x9cm medium format cameras. I wish I had kept the two Mamiya Universal cameras.

    Yes I hear you, working at the camera store that we did sell, and rented this camera for Wedding, and Portrait shooters, as the lenses are Frickin SHARP. Less expensive than the Mamiya 7 as this Universal Model not has interchangeable lenses but also BACKS to 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9, and Sheet film in 2x3, and if Polaroid is smart in bringing back Peel Apart film that you can shoot Polaroid B/W, and Color as I have a Polaroid back, But No Polaroid in Holland are Wussies in making classic format film again. For me I did not get the Mamiya but I got the Graflex XL RF with a 80mm Rodenstock as with the lens, and a 6x9 back that I have a wide angle format model, and that lens that I have is Frickin Sharp. Planned to get the 135mm, and the 180mm lens in the near future, but still looking for that 58mm lens model.... Good Video - Hope you did not Spook the Cows...

      The Mamiya Press 100mm F2.8 is said to be modeled after the Zeiss Planar 100 F2.8 and as I recall had a resolution of 95 lines/mm. On a 6x9 back, that can amount to be a very large file. You have to have backs with good seals and use a lens hood and tripod for best results. This was a camera used by William Eggleston. The transparencies are really jaw dropping when projected on a screen with a 6x9 projector.
