    Just today I was thinking I haven't seen any ralfy reviews, well the whiskeys he reviews are either unavailable here in Colombia or out of my budget. And these days I came to discover La Hechicera Rum and I thought "I'll look for a review on YT... too bad they will be surely some guys from Spain with their weird accent who I don't even know." You can't imagine how blessed I feel that you reviewed it and even more that you liked it that much hahaha Thank you very much Ralfy, you are an incredible guide for me since 2015!

    La Hechicera is a very nice rum, winner of many awards worldwide, I'm from Colombia, and ironically, is very difficult to find this rum here in our country, actually is easier to find it in the UK. A tiny note, it doesn't have any added sugar in the process.

    Yesterday I purchased Aultmore 12 year old (at a New Hampshire state liquor store, in the US) and I find that this Single Malt is a real Gem. (I have 48 open bottles of Single Malts that I've collected, tried based upon your recommendations).
    I find this Aultmore 12yo has a great aroma and taste, it states on the label that is it non-chill-filtered, and has no-caramel-added. It is bottled at 46%. It's as if they have been listening to you, Ralfy. I think this would be a great Single Malt for a new review.
    Based upon your rating scale I would give it a 95 (but you have far more experience and you know of great whiskeys that in comparison might drive this rating down). I give it such a high mark because it has an immediate interesting aroma and taste and it has no negatives in taste. It was reasonably priced, $48.99 US dollars in New Hampshire, on sale (a few dollars off).
    One reason to give it a high rating... for me, I might go with it as my old stand-by, meaning if there's a bottle of Single Malt that I just keep buying and consuming while leaving all of the others in the cabinet in my collection, then this might be my old-reliable stand-by in the future. This is why I'm keen to hear your opinion.
    My old reliable day-to-day pick prior to this one would be Old Pulteney 12 year old. I think I like the originality and no negatives of this one perhaps even more than Old Pulteney 12.
    Your thoughts?

    Fantastic! Have you tried Thomas Tew from Rhode Island? Single barrel pot-still made rum that I find to be excellent. Also, which review was it where you briefly went over some independent bottlers that were known for getting especially good barrels of certain distilleries and which distilleries those were? I remember thinking I should be taking notes and then, well, distracted by the dram.

    Thanks for the malternatives ralfy! Another _very_ good rum is the Venezuelan Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva 12 Anejo (Year). Its not very expensive either, comparable to a 12yo single malt. I can get it in Norway so no one else should have trouble either! I recommend this to everyone looking for a good rum.

      +snacklofter I'll get back to you as I'm not 100% certain what commercial rums are matured in Scotch Whisky barrels. I'm not sure if Penny Blue is or if it is Bourbon

    • @thefatrumpirate9749
      @thefatrumpirate9749 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +snacklofter Penny Blue is a mix of rums matured in both Bourbon and Whisky casks and then blended together. I am aware of some Independent bottlers using Whisky casks on occasion but not aware of many commercially available rums being matured in Whisky Casks. 99% of the time its bourbon casks. If you are looking to explore rum then drop me a line and I will give you some pointers

    Hi Ralfy, The Rum/Whisky Blenders website is truly unique. I have made my own Whisky blend (WB50569) in the past but I still cannot decide if my creation is the Frankenstein of all whisky blends or a mysterious and hard to know masterpiece like the Mona Lisa. After a few months of extensive research and careful consideration, I am leading towards to the masterpiece. Creating our own blend is good fun though. Thanks for this review! Frank

    Any info on how much/if any residual sugar is added to these rums? I've had rums in the past that I really enjoyed, only to find online and in forums that they added quite a bit of residual sugars to smooth them out; with no mention at all on the label. Disappointing to say the least.

    How come you introduce a rum-review with a malt-mention ? ;-) I'd like to suggest some rum-mentions for those rum reviews to come: roving rum rascals, rebelling rum racoons.My rum benchmark is Mount Gay Extra Old. And amrut old port rum (available online for under 20 Euros in germany) is extreemly good value for money. Are you going to review it?

    It's coming up to the Jewish festival of Pesach (Passover) again (22nd April this year) when I take a break from whisky, (being that it is made from one of the five grains forbidden over Pesach). Last year I bought a Dupuy VSOP Cognac which I was quite impressed with. I find the Israeli Carmel brandies far too sweet and this French one was fruity but quit spirit hot. Adding water it was very pleasent. This year I bought a Dupuy XO I found on special offer. I tried searching Google and TH-cam for a review of this cognac and came up empty. I'll let you know how I get on with this when I open it over Pesach....

    If you want an easy to find, relatively cheap sipping rum try Appleton 12. VX is definitely for mixing, but the 12 is amazing IMO and bottled at 43% ABV. The dunder funk really comes out nicely. And speaking of rum, you should try to make some falernum syrup Ralfy, you'll love it.

    • @redletterl78
      @redletterl78 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appleton 8 isn't too bad either. Maybe a bit simple but good value. Sadly in Australia we don't import enough variety. Too many cheap mixers or very expensive sippers. Not much in the middle for those who'd like to regularly sip rums.

    +ralfystuff We have a list of over 160 rums all with the amount of added sugar as per the Hydrometer Method. La Hechicera is included in the list and comes up 0-5 g/l (ie no added sugar). However like your good self I am not necessarily convinced it is 100% pure. thefatrumpirate.com/hydrometer-tests-2 Good notes on the Penny Blue - it is very similar I find to Barbancourt 5 Star but quite unique in its own right. Its very good but is just a tiny little bit subdued,

    hello ralfy
    Q1.can you please explain how the flavours like bacon,fish,chicken and leather etc are introduced into malts ?( especially when it s not permissible to add any flavour other then those that come from wood)
    Q2. if a cask is fresh how does a range of flavours come from oak wood alone which has not earlier contained bourbon or sherry or anything?

    • @ralfydotcom
      @ralfydotcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sehraj Singh Virk . . . they are simply the natural chemical provenance of barley spirit character and wood maturation.
      Raw wood casks are rarely used as they are too wood-rich, previous cask content like sherry and bourbon mellow the cask for whisky maturation. Barley spirit is delicate by nature and even short maturation in oak can produce complex flavours that are mindful of bacon, leather, polish, fish e.t.c.

    • @sehrajsinghvirk5273
      @sehrajsinghvirk5273 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ralfystuff :so does that mean wood s the sole flavouring agent in the barley spirit? and the fruity,meaty,flowery flavours are all imaginary?(i mean do the flavours in scotch just resemble these notes and they r not actually involved?)so its all about wood involved?

    Thanks so much for this latest review, I thoroughly enjoyed this video blog.
    I have another 'crazy' idea for you. Consider this... come up with a P.O. box address or some address (a DHL delivery site for example) where we can send bottles of spirits.
    We know you won't want to do a review of a contributed bottle, but try this alternative idea. Collect the bottles and then auction off at various events, or sell in some public way, then donate the proceeds to your favorite charity. Reason... people will generally enjoy sending you a bottle. They're not going to care if you open and taste the bottle so much as... the notion that you receive it and put it to good use.
    Your thoughts?
    (There are some interesting spirits made in Vermont, where I'm located, for example, so I might send you a bottle or two of these original spirits... that's the idea, but extended world wide.)
