I really wish the Untamed had been like a Beastmaster elite spec, that let you run 2 or even 3 pets at once. (Their unique mechanic is the ability to do combo attacks with you based on the animal's family, with slight variances based on the individual pet.) I'd personally run with Smokescale (for melee damage), Jacaranda (for ranged damage and harassment), and then either a Wyvern (for CC or elemental damage fields) or Drake (for tankiness/cleave).
Adding to this; hiw does poison master affect things? With the trait having no ICD, youd expect pets with low CD beast abilities to proc it often (Hawk, im looking at you!)
Did some pet testing myself and I agree with the conclusion. Take pets for their utility first and worry about damage second if at all. I mean what does a few hundred dps on your support class matter for the team?
I soulbeast mostly. Jacaranda is the primary with smokescale on the back. Open world mostly I've found is having three heals (yes, three) when merged is a massive advantage. On really difficult fights, I'll alternate merging and not just to divide the enemy attention. The smokescale is more for hand to hand combat, with the teleport strikes followed up by the worldly impact can do a truck ton of damage. The extra ferocity is also nice. Slightly off topic and based around flexibility during solo play rather than raw total DPS, but my two cents worth.
I run exactly the same with my pets. I just finished my ascended Marauder armor set with Scholar runes, and I've got to say that I am loving the Smokescale. I open a fight with teleport strike, and have the trait selected to trigger quickness with the F3 beast skill (in this case worldly impact). I dual axe, and I use Superior Sigil of Rage on my second axe, which triggers quickness again on critical strikes. In beast mode, I am at 100% critical chance so that adds a second burst of quickness, and We Heal As One adds a third round of quickness. That's 8 seconds of quickness (twice the attack speed), and my axe hits bounce around at 4-7k depending on how much might stacks up. It absolutely shreds at twice the speed. One Wolf Pack adds a second strike for an additional 6 seconds too, if you still have surviving enemies. If I am facing a tough boss or champion though, sometimes I still find myself swapping for the Jacaranda. Those extra heals come in clutch.
Personally always on Jacaranda. Being ranged gives indirect survivability (= more deeps uptime) and uptime in general due to less movement needed. But also you cant go wrong with a couple extra vuln stacks (+lightning field for a few more) to add value beyond the spreadsheet. 2nd pet i typically have the rock gazelle for the best breakbar skillset. If there is one mechanic that can still have people struggle, its getting that bar down to 0 as soon as possible. Speeding up that mechanic can add a LOT of real world dps to the group that you'll never see in test like these.
One convenience option to consider for raids/strikes is fern hound with F2 on autocast- almost 100% regen uptime that scales with YOUR healing power. That way you can take healing glyph + cultivadted synergy for 15k+ burst heal AND camp staff the whole fight (note that might stacking with new CA2 is way faster/easier now) All that for a petty ( *sigh* ) 1kdps loss
I'm running Condi build, so I am running Iboga either way, and Jacaranda for tougher solo PVE fights when I need additional heals and maybe even a distraction. Nice to know they're still good.
Oooh - It's nice to see the change was s onice for the feline creatures!! Say, ignoring the utility of the blind for the sand lion, would the cheetah be any good? Given it has a shadowstep + swiftness F2...
Specially if you have one of the tiger mini's and the Legendary Chuka & Champawat Tiger shortbow. Put all of those together with a Char character that has Tiger stripes and fur colored to match the Tiger pet, mini, etc.
I play a soulbeast main, with jacaranda and warthog, but recently started practicing druid and still suck at it. Jacaranda is really versatile, but also has the issue of drawing aggro I'm trying to avoid because it seems to remember oh yeah, we attacked that a while back let's do it again. It can make getting out of combat a problem all the way up to getting me killed depending on who it decides to pick on. The return key works but it just brings mobs to me. I do like it in a boss fight because then kill kill kill is what I'm usually wanting. Guess I need to go back and test the cats. Lynx was always my favorite there.
Grabs pet turtle moves back Don't ever talk to me or my baby turtle again 😭 On serious note a great video muk thanks your effort is appreciated by rangers 😆
The only good thing I found on the turtle is the long range cannon works wonders on most pve slow targets, decent dmg thanks to the cannon bite is ok but putting your pet next to melee with shield might be good since it takes the dmg from your tanks. I run with turtle and plant beast for untamed. Might look for sand lion or other beasts when im not grinding for my skyscale. I put it on pause for Halloween stuff.
I've been running soulbeast with the Jacaranda as the main pet (I use it's healing ability when merged a lot) and the Gazelle for CC. Just got untamed, so can you do one for soulbeast and untamed?

Off topic, but are you ever gonna revisit the Low Intensity builds? Seems like some stuff doesn't work as well since that last big update, and those builds have been a godsend as a disabled gamer.
If it is not fixed, the boons on your pet will disappear. You need to use "We heal as one!" for upkeeping the boons. (You copy the boons from yourself, but only once, then yougets the boons, pet's are not.) I don't think it will make too much difference. And yes, Hyena need a serious rework. Halving the power because "there are 2 hyena" is sounds like balanced, but there are problems there: summoned hyena is not always presents, cannot be controlled, not your pet, so pet bonuses (and boons) not applies.

Can't answer for Mukluk, but my guess is that they are not on the list because they are so far down the list of Pet DPS, that they weren't worth mentioning. The list is probably more like a Top 20 to 25 list for pet only DPS.
He left them out, partly because some pets of the same family are better damage due to their unique ability, eg hawk > raven in damage over a duration. However, he has missed out on some stuff, like Jaguar buffing its crit chance and damage with its F2. Among other things. So yeah, this is incomplete, but gives at least some perspective.
That's by design, not an accident. Same goes for Elite Spec's, the newer expansion always gets the best DPS, to encourage players to buy. Probably true for every video game out there.
Lashtail devourer is crap with that long windup on its F2. The Carion variant is way stronger, its F2 ability actually has a faster casting, it deals about the same damage in an AoE and, not only that, those extra attacks you get in its rotation have an extra 2x20% chance to inflict poison since it benefits from its own combo field.
Might depend on your stats. I guess he was using harrier as that's what Druids usually take unless they have to tank. So no condi stats on that. Taking something like plaguedoctor instead could yield different results.
@@kaltaron1284 This video was about Pet only damage, and not about what DPS the pet could add to the character DPS, so do the character stats matter or have any effect on the Pet only DPS numbers? Any bird gives swoop f1 and swiftness f2 which offer another mobility option. Wolves have a merged movement skill as well with slightly shorter range than the bird one.
For the Soulbeast it's relatively easy. (Let's ignore Deimos Hand Kite for now.) Depending on whether you're power or condi decides if you take Ferocious or Deadly. @@nortyfiner True. I guess it will be more important for PvP than PvE though. Although being able to switch to another pet and have another CC might be useful but to be honest there's very few bosses where you could need that and instead getting your party to actually do their job might be better. Also the other mastery trait is like 10% damage boost, so...
Muk doing the heavy lifting so we don't have to. Of course I don't play Druid, it's the only elite in the game I avoid. 😅 But I have 3 SB and 2 Untamed and 1 Core, so still somewhat useful.😉
The EoD pets need a rework. Most of them were form over function at release, and the only one that changed was the White Tiger after a massive buff to it's f2. It'd be nice to actually have the wallow be a slight CCing DPS pet, or to have the siege turtle actually function well. Wallow- crank up those numbers, that's all it really needs, in every mode. It's not that special, I see no reason to have it be that weak. Siege Turtle- The bubble, if it's going to remain stationary when casted, needs to be longer. 4s is pitiful for the damage the pet provides. Alternatively (or preferably with a buff to the bubble), move the cannon to the current slot where Snap (the bite attack is), increase the damage on Snap, and make the cannon faster. They could relatively easily change the behavior so it uses the cannon initially as an "opener" and then moves in to use Snap and Slam. This also helps prevent the awful situation of "I used my bubble, time to let it cool down save it for the next phase where I need it", only for the turtle to have ran off to use it's cannon, and when you need the F2 again, you sometimes might not notice in all the chaos and pop the bubble at a bad position, all because of the pet's bad AI behavior. If the cannon itself is going to remain ground targeted (anet why is it ground targeted, I know it's a small version of the siege turtle mount but it doesn't need to copy the cannons), then the damage should be increased as well, as it keeps the pet from really being effective when the boss moves if the damage is so low. White Tiger- I've never noticed that odd movement interaction with Phase Pounce (the shadowstep skill), might just be on the hitbox size? Either way that should be fixed, that's probably a bug. Phoenix: Hoooooo boy. The Charge skill (where it runs, dropping bombs in its wake) needs a rework. It should charge to a target (as opposed to a straight line through them), dropping X bombs in its path, lets say 5 for this potential rework. If it's right up against the target, then it drops 5 bombs at its feet. If it's max distance away, it drops 5 bombs in its path. Gale Breath, the F2, needs to be a beam similar to the IBS Special Action Keys (i.e. Spirit Nova), and have a much shorter cooldown and cast time with much shorter damage (1/3 of each? 2 hits instead of 6, 1/3s if possible if not 1/2s cast time, round up the cooldown to 8s from 6.67s so it's not too OP). The Phoenix has the lowest health of any pet in the game, and fights where player AI (mesmer clones, elementalist, theif, and necromancer summons, jade mechs, ranger pets AND spirits) can be targeted seem to be increasing in number a decent amount, and it seems clear that they wanted the Phoenix to be a DPS pet (as evidenced by the 3.0 coefficient on Gale Breath, and it still managed to be a bad skill). Anet needs to rework the Phoenix if that's going to ever happen, and I wouldnt mind seeing it more from a personal perspective, it uses some pretty unique skills.
The moral of this story is . . . . . "Don't choose your pet based on how much DPS it will do, choose it for which utility you need, because none of the Ranger pets are any good at DPS".
Tested one bear, and all of them have identical stats, just different F2's and the chill roar wasn't good enough to pull ahead by any noticeable margin.
@@MuklukTH-cam How sad that is to hear, Muk. It's par for the course really but thank you for that information. I still love my Icee Bear! He's very easy to care for and is quite fond of conveniently mauling Krait and Naga into bite sized pieces of nigiri, sushi and sashimi, but who isn't? 😎

No. He specifically stated this video is about core and Druids. Soulbeasts have a different consideration in their pet choices, specifically the merged skills, rather than the DPS or F2 of the pet on its own. Mechanist is currently the more interesting pet class imo. Playing as either healer, condi or power will drastically change the mech's abilities. Ranger just use one of the pof pets on all roles with little to no difference in how the pet works
Rock deer be like reeee!! XD
my pet runs into aoe and dies... my personal best pet is the one that stays alive most of the time :P
Muk hates Soulbeasts... :(
No. He specifically stated this video is about core and Druids. Soulbeasts have a different consideration in their pet choices, specifically the merged skills, rather than the DPS or F2 of the pet on its own. Soulbeasts really need their own video for that, which I'm sure Muk will get around to eventually.
@@nortyfiner Well the "hates" thing was a joke. But Muk doesn't like to play with Soulbeast builds. So I think it is very unlikely that we will see a Mukluk quality level video about pets for Soulbeasts.
Muk showed off one of the best soulbeast dps/cdps builds last year or so, great in fractals and elsewhere. Axe/torch, dagger/axe. Not sure if he made it himself but it's a monster build. It made ranger fun for me again, as did Untamed so I'm waiting for his video about that (hopefully).
Already knew Iboga , jacaranda , rock gazelle ,electro wyvern are the good ones, after the intro i hoped for new stuff but only the sand lion popped up as a weak 2. option instead of iboga
Another "do for Soulbeast next" comment.
"Oh yeah, I should look at getting the Jacaranda and the Electric Wyvern. Where do I-"
*Path of Fire and Heart of Thorns be like*
...Here I go, dying 500 times again.
There should be legendary pet next expansion
you wasted so much time to test how to gain 300 dps...
First!
