My cousin James participated in this battle in the Marines. I was 8 yrs.old I. Interesting fact here is I was part of operation phantom fury II I was army in support of the marines and we heard how this battle was likened to the battle of Hue being that it was street by street house by house room by room which Fallujah was exactly like that. I remember seeing the movie Full metal jacket when I was a kid and those characters were battling in Hue,,, I’ve never heard about it and knew what it was about till after the battle of Fallujah after we fucked that city up, that battle is what being a marine and army infantryman was all about sorry to say. However we did our jobs which was bring death and destruction take and keep ground and we did just that.
My Father-in-law was a Marine Major attached to the MACV compound in HUE at the time. What this documentary didn't cover was the plight of the US Troops in the compound. When the MACV compound found out about the beginning of the battle, My Father-in-law took command and control of the compound and set up defensive positions. the MACV compound was hit by two battalions of North Vietnam regulars. If it wasn't for the quick action of my Father-in-law, the compound would have fallen and all the US personnel in the compound would have been killed or captured.

6:57 I don’t think enough context is provided before discussing this battle. The D,I,E in D.I.M.E is not addressed. 1/ In 1945 the Truman administration committed a strategic blunder due to their lack of understanding of geopolitic in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh’s movement was nationalistic and more moderate then. By denying Ho’s plea for cooperation, Truman forced Ho to go full communist. An ally against China turned into mortal enemy. 2/ National liberation fevor was strong, most talented Vietnamese joined HCM. Washington couldn’t find a capable person to lead the opposition. Hence Saigon constantly switched between dictatorship and coups. This weak leadership structure would eventually led to Saigon making disastrous decisions later ending the war. 3/ Thieu and Ky were never leadership material. The strong ones already led previous coup, these 2 were waiting on the sideline. Up until now, many Vietnamese still question whether Thieu was a Hanoi agent because his decisions undermined the south so much The battle had all these in the background
You know why? Because the video only focuses on the Battle of Hue 😂 try to look for other youtube channels or the ken burns documentary series if you want to know the geopolitical background of the vietnam war.
@@Philip_of_Santos You make a good point. But they dedicate the first 7 minutes to a Prelude without covering the most important issue. i.e. The battle did not need to happen in the first place if diplomacy was done with competence. 4 million deaths (both sides) for a counter-productive war is so tragic that I feel it needed to be put in context. Just a minor critic of the first 7-minute. They touch on that somewhat in the end but if there is a prelude, it should be mentioned.
When you have to buy a map at a Texaco, that’s a problem. When you severely underestimate your enemies combat power, that’s a problem. Some of our commanders, don’t realize these people are fighting for there existence.
Good day Gents. I wish I could have been a part of this one also! I am enjoying the documentary so far and as usual I can already tell it is going to be informative. I just discussed this battle on my friend's TH-cam channel on 09 November so if you don't mind I will include it here: th-cam.com/video/f2RshDZ85fc/w-d-xo.html
I always find it interesting the US troops raise the US flag when they achieve an objective with a flag pole. They do not raise the South Vietnamese flag. Very interesting.
Yes we did raise the flag at the Cidital. 20 minutes we were told to bring it down and fly the RVN flag. We did most of the work and suffered more casualties than ARVN.
Imagine you’re a Marine fighting in underbrush and jungles getting a redirect to taking a city. As stated in this film they had to learn on the fly. Nevertheless, they got the job done! Interestingly, the lessons learned from this battle served as the basis for what later became “The Second Battle of Fallujah“, Iraq 46 years later. Semper Fi.
As an observation point from a Vietnamese, from the Vietnam War to the more Afghanistan War the US soldiers on the ground fought heroically in every major battle. I cannot remember any major battles that they lost to the NVA/ Vietcong or the Taliban. From NCOs to Officers they showed brilliant tactical maneuvers combined with American firepower to defeat the enemy at will. Unfortunately, the Politicians in Washington dictates "Negotiations" with the enemy to achieve a "Peaceful' end to these wars. And as such they abandon their allies from the South Vietnamese ARVN to the more recent Afghan National Army. As a result of poor political decision making process the US is eventually defeated. We will now witness another abandonment whereby the US will force another ally in this case Ukraine into "peaceful" negotiations with the enemy. It is unfortunate, that the US enemies have such political perseverance to wage war but the US doesn't. And as such another 3rd world country will succumb to barbarism and endless poverty.
What they don’t mention is that the Marines were severely hampered in their effort early on as Hue was the cultural capital of Vietnam and the South Vietnamese did not want it destroyed. They relented and thus began the reduction of the Imperial palace to ruins.
But after 1968, SV and the US were more successful. 1968 was a year in which the VC and NVA took multiple major beatings. By 1971-72, SV was in much better shape.

A less known fact. At the end of WWII, the British used surrendered Japanese soldiers to suppress Vietnamese attempts at independence. This likely worsened 'The Great Famine of 1945' (Nạn đói lớn năm 1945) causing 400,000 to 2 million deaths in Vietnam.

Excellent documentary. Thank you!
I have been to Vietnam twice and visited Hue over a Christmas period (it was fantastic) I took a tour of the ancient capital and was amused by our very professional tourist guide: tell us about the ancient Capital and it's long history and the building going back many hundred of years: I just could not help my self when I mention that during the Tet offensive the Americans did not leave anything standing in its original form Lol 😂😂never got a response: I love Vietnam and its people: it's worth a visit. Veteran of Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
You are correct sir.
Great!
Good 👍 one! Thanks!
My cousin James participated in this battle in the Marines. I was 8 yrs.old I. I figure when he got home It was 1969 My mother & I went to visit My Aunt $ James walked up the store & bought me 3 candy bars. In 69 you would get huge milkyways, 3 musketeers for 5-10cents but what stuck with me and I later understood was although I considered James S. a hero his ordeal hadn't stripped him of his humanity. He became a successful executive with Bg&e in Baltimore. He'll always be a hero
I remember my uncles and cousins great guys great memories you got me on this one.

Was in Hue earlier this year beautiful city!
I've read a long time ago a book about the Battle of Hue. "Phase Line Green" I admire the tenacity and ethos of the U.S. Marines.
I was point man for the 3rd squad of the 3rd platoon, Alpha Co 1/1. I made it thru the 26 days of the battle of Hue, with a couple of wounds but alive. Th't a day that goes by that I don't think about what happened in Hue City.
Thank you. Drop off all bad memories back there to live normal again, Sir. God Bless!
Chứng tỏ bạn vẫn có chút lương tâm, một nước Việt Nam nghèo nàn xa xôi, người dân Việt Nam không làm hại đất nước và người thân của bạn... We got to Hue 14Mar68 on Operation Ford containing and pursuing an NVA regiment. It was some of the most vicious fighting I was involved in. Hip - F 2/3 1968
Nothing wrong with the truth brother well put.
Những đồng tiền nhuốm máu người dân Việt mà bố vợ ông đem về chắc nhiều lắm phải không, vì phải làm theo chỉ đạo là tìm và diệt... Giết càng nhiều người tiền thưởng càng lớn
Up until now, many Vietnamese still question whether Thieu was a Hanoi agent because his decisions undermined the south so much
The battle had all these in the background
You know why? Because the video only focuses on the Battle of Hue 😂 try to look for other youtube channels or the ken burns documentary series if you want to know the geopolitical background of the vietnam war.
@dzungtran314 you make some excellent points.
@@dzungtran314 That's like saying the battle didn't need to happen if the war hadn't happen. Meh

If anyone is interested, there is a good book about the fighting by the Marines in Hue, by Eric Helm.
I think it is called, ' the Battle for Hue '.
I actually like "Hue: 1968" by Mark Bowden ("Black Hawk Down", "Killing Pablo") much better.
Jayson, great to hear from you! Please share this film with your multitude of fans.
I always find it interesting the US troops raise the US flag when they achieve an objective with a flag pole. They do not raise the South Vietnamese flag. Very interesting.
Well they never gave crap about the country they were destroying in order to “save” did they . So I don’t see how it’s surprising
Yes we did raise the flag at the Cidital. 20 minutes we were told to bring it down and fly the RVN flag. We did most of the work and suffered more casualties than ARVN.
Politics.
Semper Fi.
When the 5 year enlisted infantryman watches these religiously wishing he took his ticket to west point..
OCS was my path to becoming an officer.
Officers are useless and get men killed
Ya got it right ✅️
What they don’t mention is that the Marines were severely hampered in their effort early on as Hue was the cultural capital of Vietnam and the South Vietnamese did not want it destroyed. They relented and thus began the reduction of the Imperial palace to ruins.
Westmoreland did more to lose the war than the NVA and VC combined!
Way-y-y- above-average. Now THAT was a good investment of fifty minutes.
But after 1968, SV and the US were more successful. 1968 was a year in which the VC and NVA took multiple major beatings. By 1971-72, SV was in much better shape.
You thought it was in better shape. It wasn't.
The US and RVN was not in control anywhere but major cities.

Amazing country. Fought off several invaders, and has become a fairly successful country . Such a different mindset to the desert dwellers.
The Marines were pulled out of the jungles and sent into the urban fight that was not being trained for at that time. They learned house by house, day by day, how to conduct MilitaryOps in Urban Terrain. They also had their hands tied initially by the politicians, once again, to avoid using heavy artillery and air support. Semper Fi!
Improvise, adapt, overcome. Hasn't changed since WWII.

Were the marines doing much jungle fighting at the time? It’s my understanding the marines abandoned the method of wandering around in the jungle waiting to be ambushed like the army still did

So: wait, wait wait; The Tet offensive was caused by US? But; are you guys sure about that?!?
Considering you guys have an election in 1968, and you guys want to divide Viet Nam despite the Geneva Accord 1954... I would say "yes"
@@lehoang3532 Your argument has a feedback loop logic. Because the US fought in Viet; Because of French colonialism, the US entered Viet, Because Portuguese colonies in 16 century... It will escalate very quickly, and you would have to blame Sumerians for the invention of writing... Or even better start blaming Lucy, that 3,2 million years ago she mated and reproduced (just to be on the safe side...) The documentary skewed the reality in most simplistic ways.
John, the timing of the offensive had to do with it being an election year in the U.S. It’s not anything more complicated than that. Cool your jets, man.
@@MarcosElMalo2 Ok, I am going to cool my jets. However, you check the discussion again, because yours "the timing of the offensive had to do with it being an election year in the U.S. It’s not anything more complicated than that." is incorrect. I asked if US caused the Tet Offensive, and he said "yes". That is the wife-beater argument. You made me do it... Tet Offensive was an action solely planned and executed by North Vietnam. I am just really sick of the state / non state actors sending their own population to a meat grinder, just to cry about it later. It is disgusting! Plus talk to Vietnamese emigree in northern America, what they are thinking about comunists... Shouldn't we hear their cry too?!?
And now America has collapsed and Vietnam is a strong, vibrant and successful country. The war was always about re-unification. In the 1940s, the first country Ho Chi Minh appealed to, trying to throw off the yoke of French imperialism, was America.
America’s collapsed? that might be a little bit over dramatic . Vietnam is a vibrant country but it’s got issues as well mainly millions of young people with no jobs and no prospects for the future

all in all.... war was lost by USA !!!
A few years ago I was drinking in my local VFW. They had some hats for sale. Hats that said the wearer was a veteran of Vietnam. The hats were made in the Republic of Vietnam. It was that moment when I asked myself "did we really lose" or is everything just make believe? We needed their hats and they needed our market so why did we need a war? I respect their veterans of that war just as much as I respect our veterans of that war. And I consider our veterans as heroes. Soldiers respect soldiers we may not respect our politicians. But in response to your comment. All wars are lost by both sides when they were unnecessary from the start.
@@bullwinkle5445 Based on the original goal, the US lost - in 1940s and 50s, the US wanted to maintain a French colony (or at least, keeping Viet Nam a French colony, so that French is friendly), and from 60s onward, the US wanted to and actually break Geneva Accord by breaking the unification of Viet Nam.
The "market" is something much later, in the 90s or so
@@bullwinkle5445A good excuse is "politicians are assholes." However, there is a "small" nuance here - American politicians have become assholes in this war! The "goal" was "to prevent the communization of Vietnam" and what did you get as a result? Socialist united Vietnam! Nixon and Johnson played into the hands of the Viet Cong and Hanoi, ruining their soldiers, the economy, and the prestige of America.
