  • The FDA is set to decide Friday on a gene editing technique for patients with sickle cell disease. It would be the first use of CRISPR in the United States to treat a disease. CBS News' chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook has more.

It will be wonderful if this can be accessible by Nigerians in Nigeria. We already don't have access to most treatments, we need this here and for adults too.

This is so awesome. I lost a cousin and a friend to SCD and dealing with the illness myself, I know the pain this young man had to suffer daily. It's a blessing to see how much they are actually putting into this illness. Although people tend to know little about this illness, it is nice to see the media actually speaking up about it. So happy he will live past 40 and not have to deal with the excruciating pain any longer! I'm 33 and have a milder form of the illness but have plenty of friends who have the more severe form and know some friends who didn't make it past their 30s. Just happy it's helping some ppl.

its super common in central africa and west africa also. But much less so in southern africa. i wonder why that is.
and this is the reason why i keep telling african americans in denial. that their genes are the exact same present in modern day africa.

That would be wonderful for them to do gene therapy to fix this. I can't imagine the pain the children go through. I hope we can get all kids affected with this can get threatment, no matter what their income level is. I just love what scientists and doctors are able to create and fix. What a great life I hope this boy will live!

When regular people can afford it. I used to get excited at news of medical breakthroughs until I realized they largely weren’t for most of us. They don’t mention that it costs $1.3-3.? million and that the very few hospitals approved for the procedure only have the resources to treat 50(?) patients a year at the moment.

Normal people couldn't afford an MRI when they were first introduced nor cell phones. Hopefully the price will come down soon!

If you look at the treatments that sickle cell causes, the gene treatment is cheaper.

There's no one gene that causes any chronic illness. This is more like a GMO kind of situation. Something like this was done with dibetics, it failed in the long run. This is only getting closer to creating perfect baby via gene editing.

I wonder if this can be done with cancers as well. Because there is a damaged dna that makes cancer cells why can’t this be a treatment for this as well??? Chemo to destroy the cancer cells, complete dna edit, and see how it works on cancers.?? This is an awesome discovery!!

People are testing gene therapy for cancers too. It's a harder problem because sickle cell is caused by one mutation while cancer is cause by several mutations.

He'd inherited the alleles (not A gene) for sickle cell disease
    It's Johnny's genome (Not Johnny's "genetic code")
Johnny's genome is not made of billions of "letters"
    This is pretty cool!

The cost of this therapy is $2.2 million per person. For a cure that is predominantly plaguing the black/hispanic community (1/365 black AA) to promote a cure for a disease that most AA with the disease won't ever be able afford is not helpful in my opinion. There's no way an insurance company would dare cover this treatment. It just an advertisement of showcasing medical advances that is clouded in false hope.

I think it would be cheaper if sickle cell carriers did not marry/procreate with other carriers. 1/4 chance of passing on this horrible disease if both parents are carriers.

Lady2550; Gene editing is a slippery moral slope into designer babies. If you’ll recall, a Chinese doctor named He Jiankui was found guilty of ‘illegal medical practices’ and sentenced to 3 years in prison. He and two collaborators ‘forged ethical review documents and misled doctors into unknowingly implanting gene-edited embryos into two women’.
Gene editing is for correcting DNA anomalies. Most assuredly NOT for creating the perfect human.

That is complete nonsense! You'd rather have this child continue to live in pain and likely die at an early age instead of using new medical technology that at least gives him a chance at living a longer, healthy life? If you believe that God created everything, then you should also believe that he bestowed the necessary intelligence upon the doctors and scientists who discovered this breakthrough. I swear, sometimes it seems like religious people are completely brainwashed and don't have one iota of common sense.
