5a here where I am in New Hampshire, and we have a valley directly behind the home in our back yard. There’s a brook down there. Completely shaded by 100 foot tall evergreens. Mostly eastern hemlocks. It’s nice when the breeze comes up in the summer. I suppose that valley could be a microclimate zone at least 4b but that doesn’t show up different in the map. But it is noticeably cooler than where the house and garden is.
Unless the valley is 5a, and then where I do my planting is a micro 5b 🤔 My planting area is facing southwest, it’s flat, soil, and it’s almost completely sun. Lilacs grow amazing and so does the common milkweed. I’m in love with both of them. They look beautiful and smell even better. ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm in 5b and everything I love prefers a warmer climate. This place kills my elephant ears.
