Sadly I couldn’t remember the Q code for fan boy :-) Confirming you were 559 with some QSB at the start then jumped to a solid 579 for the rest of the time I heard you on air. That was to Sydney’s Inner West, so not too far from the city or the airport. Re the rig and setup I was working battery portable on the kitchen bench after fixing an issue with the transmitter earlier in the day. Testing it out and listening in while prepping for an early dinner Rig was a Xiegu X108G, then running 4W, capable of 18-20W Test was at 2W and 0.5W, the lowest setting, before returning to 5W Antenna is 33 odd feet of vertical drawn aluminium tube tied to the back fence, with a 1.2m helical whip I made for 40m screwed to the top that acts a kind of trap extension for 40m Matching is a multi tap transformer box I made with an FT240-43 with switchable 2-14 bifilar turns on both feed side and the antenna side Ground is simply a Bunnings ground stake....stuck in the ground. Key was my little BEC mini field straight key I bought off eBay from a dude in Greece. Been at this CW thing for just on 12 months, now, so thanks for your patience with my drunken chicken pecking keying and missed bits you repeated. We should have tried with my one of my son’s Pixie kits he built when he was 9, if I had known you had 7023. Still a freshly repaired rig, with a mod I’ve done for digital audio and home brew antenna and match must still count for some _Real Ham™️_ points for the QSO :-) Peter, it was a pleasure, and a thrill to QSO to yourself on such minimalist home brew equipment. Thanks Chris. It would be interesting to try the Pixie. I'm sure I'd be able to hear it. I'd start on a better receiver though. The operating location is just past the end of my street so it's easy to reach and low noise. Maybe we could tee up an afternoon?

I’ve had the idea for a while ever since seeing the Pixie You have $10 to spend to build a transceiver and matched antenna to get on the air. Power, headphones or speaker, or postage charges don’t count towards the $10, but the transmitter, receiver antenna and match do. You’re allowed to _curb side shop_ for stuff in council pickups, or have stuff given to you that would be thrown out or scrapped. Parts from your junk box are valued at the lowest published price you can find online. Half that if parts were “reclaimed” Jury is out for whether the keyer should or shouldn’t be included. I’m 50/50 on that as I love my mini BEC leg strap field key. Sadly, it didn’t come with the leg strap, but I use it on the table anyway so no matter... Is it safe working with 5w so close to a receiver on the same frequency? Wouldn't it get damaged without some kind of T/R switch?
It didn't blow up my receiver. Other gear may not be so robust.
