@Greg B Hi Greg, for accurate breakdowns on transmission production, I'd suggest joining the International Edsel Club for $25 dues per year. They are the more friendly of the two Edsel clubs. You'll make friends, and learn enough to make an informed purchase of a used Edsel.

Maybe it was just too expensive, and people didn't want to put that much money into a startup car company. All I know is I've got a feeling that Edsels will be worth quite a lot down the road.

Edsels quality control department was a failure. The guy heading that department thought Edsel would take sales away from Mercury so they purposely left parts off some of them. Pretty soon Edsel became a joke and comedians were making jokes about them. Its sad. They were ahead of there time for a short while. Read the book. Disaster in Detroit. The story about the Edsel.
The steering wheel is huge to give you leverage to steer... I love cars from the 50s gosh the 50s were the most beautiful decade for cars they were all just gorgeous
I can relate because I drove a 1973 Plymouth duster and it was so different than driving my car! Thank god it had power steering but it was such a different experience and I loved it. It was so fun driving down the road and listening to the exhaust when pulling away from a stop sign

Just wanted to thank you. I love all old cars that have been saved, yes, even a Vega! I introduced my son to classic cars in our 1978 Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee. You and him have the exact mannerisms and humor!! He acted the same way when he saw it. We flew to Texas and drove it back to Ohio, he used the yacht and boat terms, but loved it by the time we home. You brought a smile to the faces of our family!
This was emissions free, pre-unleaded, and Edsel was intended to be a step above Ford so I imagine it may well have run a slightly hotter carb from the factory as opposed to its Ford equivalent. So that number seems on the level.

I saw one of those last weekend near Pottsville, TN, two-door sedan, barely recognizable from the rear, but unmistakable. The front seat had been reupholstered recently and the green fabric had horse-collars reminiscent of the grille center woven into the cloth. It also had a manual choke knob in the middle of the dash. And they'll pull your man-card if you don't know how to operate an overdrive from that period.
Haven't even finished the video but I have to say that the beginning shots were AMAZING. You could really see and hear the theme, it rocks. Keep up the great work David.
It's so amazing to see classics like this. I'm so glad they switched from the column shifter to the floor shifter but it's amazing to see the progression. Even in the 50's & 60's there was a car scene! My grandpa loves to tell me about his days as a teenager with a lowered car (forgot the model) and having sought after wheels and all kinds of other fun things. This was such a cool review, glad you got the opportunity!

Phenomenal video! The music at the beginning was spot on too! Glad you got to review such an old car. I've been lucky enough to see 2 Edsel's in my life at car shows, but neither were in as good condition as this one.
I found a pair of almost perfectly preserved Edsel wagon shells like 10 minutes from my house. They're for sale for $1600. The catch? You gotta dig them up outta the guys yard. The original owner parked them under a tree that is now mostly a hill.
Great review, David! This car brand failed for several reasons, including it's polarizing looks (especially the first year models), it's muddied market placement, and the late 50's recession.
David, I'm a big fan of the car reviews and vlogs, and have been waiting for a long time to see you review something along these lines and it was awesome. Everyone should try driving an older car like this at least once, it really makes you appreciate the simpler way things used to be. Its an awesome experience I get to enjoy every day when i drive my 73 LeMans, even just to go run errands.
Once the automotive writers criticized it's styling and "horse collar grille", it was pretty much doomed, it's build quality wasn't any worse than it's Ford and Mercury stable mates, but it's too polarizing styling is what sealed it's fate.
I read the entire history of the Edsel. I loved how some of them came with push bottom shifting. What killed this car was they built it during the Great Depression. Over all I think the Edsel is a nice collectors car.

Great review! I'm in a New Product Development class and a case I'm reading mentioned the Edsel and that it was a flop, but no explanation why. I'm curious to understand why it was such a failure and your video was a great example for the pros and cons. I felt like I was in the car riding with you. Here's my impression of the Edsel failure a victim of the culture at that time. It didn't help that many Ford Mo Co bigshots hated the car probably for selfish reasons. '58 and '59 Edsels were a sales failure because they didn't sell to the forecast 250,000. Actually 68,000 were built in 1958; 47,000 in 1959; 2800 in 1960. Most new nameplates today are happy to reach 68,000 the first year, Edsel simply overpromised in a year with a recession economy. Yes, there were start up quality problems and negative publicity mostly related to styling, but Edsel was better looking than critics would admit, and it had very high performance. In retrospect I really like the '58 and '59 Edsel styling and I'm a Chevy guy. Some fuss was made over the name choice, "Edsel" didn't really resonate with the public ear. I wish Ford Mo Co would have spent some advertising $$$ educating the public about Edsel Ford, Henry's only son and wearing the name Edsel with pride. 1960 was another matter, in my opinion the Edsel that year was suicided, the stylists should have been slapped for that botched design.
My 68 GMC has a 3 on the tree, and boy was that a learning experience. Nobody around to teach me. just had to pull around the shifter until the truck moved. Now I can basically bang shift the thing. Also no sycnros. Double clutching like you should.
Back in the 1950s, some towns still didn't have many paved roads. So the cars of the day were also offroad cars, at least a little bit. The gear shifters are set up to make easier the "rocking" the car back-and-forth to get out of potholes, or soft spots from being parked for a while.

My freind Blake is actually restoring one right now. Hes had the car since we were in high school and man that was the most stand out car there. Were 21 now and hes doing a full body restoration on it.

My dad had a 64 mercury comet for a while and I completely agree with your review. 2 speed auto took forever to shift, car was slow, hard to turn, even with a massive diameter steering wheel, and had virtually no brakes. Even compared to my 81 Camaro, and my friends 65 mustang, the mercury felt so unrefined. It did have tons of character though which I really enjoyed.
Obviously he never drove a column shifter before but I'm surprised he makes such a point about the shift pattern. It makes eminent sense . . . you have 2nd and 3rd on the back because its so much more convenient to have reverse on the same side as 1st since you only have to move the shifter back and forth when parking.
My brother just bought an identical Ranger to this. We plan to drive it in the 24 Hours of LeMons road rally in August. It should be a blast. Fortunately, the car is trashed enough that we don't have to worry about its 'valuable collector's item' status. It would have been a $25 car in 1970.

Ahhhh the good old days...LOL...LOL The first time I drove a column shift truck, back in 1977, I had no idea what I was doing. I have a 1959 Edsel Ranger! Mine is a 4 door hardtop with a 292 cubic inch engine with a 2 speed automatic transmission. I love the old car and it gets a lot of looks. It is just an old classic.
A buddy of mine loves old caddies, so I've driven my fair share of land yachts and the first time driving 3 on the tree is quite the experience haha. Great vid.
The one thing about the edsel that people don't realize is that it was the platform that ford developed the FE (Ford-Edsel) big block for which eventually went on to power the high end of the popular mustang, station wagons, luxury sedans, coupes (t-bird), pickups, and industrial applications. In reality the car may have flopped but the power train was immensely successful. I'm used to seeing vehicles like this. I drive a 1967 C20 chevy every day and when drum brakes are well adjusted and not worn they perform quite well... they just feel odd when your used to power brakes, they feel a lot like air brakes if you have driven a semi. On a note I love seeing peoples reactions of the cars of yesterday. btw seat belts won't save you from the non-collapsible steering column that would impale your chest in a crash :)
Surveyed owners compiled a laundry list of problems, including faulty welds, leaky trunks, and power steering failure. The complex Teletouch shifter was a service nightmare, in part because control wires were routed too close to hot exhaust system parts. Because assembly workers had to use different tools to install some parts distinct from mainstream Ford and Mercury models, it was common practice for dealers to receive unfinished Edsels with the disparate parts chucked in the trunk. Like every all-new car, start-up issues were inevitable during the initial manufacturing months.
I'm in Australia. Throughout the 1950s, 60 and even into the 70s the "three on the tree" was pretty much the standard gearshift configuration on local cars. Manual transmissions were far more popular than automatics here right into the 90s. I learned to drive in a 1964 EH Holden (Google it. They were quite a pretty car). It was fitted with the 3-speed manual transmission. The gearboxes had no synchromesh on low gear, so most of us became adept at double-clutching to grab low gear in stop/start traffic. If driving the Edsel messed with your head, imagine driving the EH Holden. It was right-hand drive, and while the shift pattern was the same as the Edsel featured, it was on the other side of the steering column!
Great video i just bought a 59 edsel was barn kept 18 years then garage kept the rest only 34k but mine has a primitive form of power steering i believe, can't wait to get it home
Amazing though how sometimes, it's the INCREDIBLY bad failures that we remember SOOOO well...especially in this case, because I doubt there is a single person today that hasn't heard of the Edsel, yet, the Edsel died a remarkably quick death...most of us have never seen one, been around one or anything because it did fail soooo miserably...yet, we've all heard of it and some of us get curious about it... Just kinda something interesting to think about...
For all the other guys like David who've never seen this kind of shifter before, now every time you hear an old guy say "3 on the tree" you know what they're talking about. Those old transmissions were actually very common for many years. Strange, but effective.

It's cars like this that make me appreciate those nicer cars even more. You know, the Cadillacs, Fords and the Chevys. Cars like this are becoming more and more rare. Once everyone has souped up, bagged, blown every Camaro or C-10 or cobra there will be cars like this, simple yet such a reminder that car companies launched gigantic campaigns to win over the public. Some won...some didn't. This just makes me appreciate where we have come from and where we are headed.
Classic cars are the bomb. My dad has a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, which is the first classic car he's had since I was born. It got me on the classic car thing and I really like those classic cars that aren't very popular or different, for example the Edsel. Just don't hate on the classics, man.

On old cars with drum brakes you usually need to pump the brakes to build pressure in the lines
That's not what was happening. Drum brakes were self-adjusting. They did it every time you backed up and then braked.

200hp? wow I was expecting you to say 120hp. I mean a 307 from 68 and 73 were making 115 hp minimum, impressive I might say.
The 352 in my 66 f100 makes around 200 so the number fits

I just bought a 58 Fairlane, it has all the same qualities. The older cars of the 50s were truly works of art.

My freind Blake is actually restoring one right now. Hes had the car since we were in high school and man that was the most stand out car there. Were 21 now and hes doing a full body restoration on it.

Angel Cruz Actually, I know the law in Colorado is that if the car wasn't factory equipped with seat belts, you can legally drive it on the road.

After 1966 all cars sold in the US had to have seat belts but it wasn't mandatory to were them
My dad had a 64 mercury comet for a while and I completely agree with your review. 2 speed auto took forever to shift, car was slow, hard to turn, even with a massive diameter steering wheel, and had virtually no brakes. Even compared to my 81 Camaro, and my friends 65 mustang, the mercury felt so unrefined. It did have tons of character though which I really enjoyed.

Obviously he never drove a column shifter before but I'm surprised he makes such a point about the shift pattern. It makes eminent sense . . . you have 2nd and 3rd on the back because its so much more convenient to have reverse on the same side as 1st since you only have to move the shifter back and forth when parking.
My brother just bought an identical Ranger to this. We plan to drive it in the 24 Hours of LeMons road rally in August. It should be a blast. Fortunately, the car is trashed enough that we don't have to worry about its 'valuable collector's item' status. It would have been a $25 car in 1970.
I love edsels for the exact reason you said. "you never see them" despite them being a big flop they actually had some pretty cool features about them in their time

I have a 1959 Edsel Ranger! Mine is a 4 door hardtop with a 292 cubic inch engine with a 2 speed automatic transmission. I love the old car and it gets a lot of looks. It is just an old classic.
A buddy of mine loves old caddies, so I've driven my fair share of land yachts and the first time driving 3 on the tree is quite the experience haha. Great vid.

The one thing about the edsel that people don't realize is that it was the platform that ford developed the FE (Ford-Edsel) big block for which eventually went on to power the high end of the popular mustang, station wagons, luxury sedans, coupes (t-bird), pickups, and industrial applications. In reality the car may have flopped but the power train was immensely successful. I'm used to seeing vehicles like this. I drive a 1967 C20 chevy every day and when drum brakes are well adjusted and not worn they perform quite well... they just feel odd when your used to power brakes, they feel a lot like air brakes if you have driven a semi. On a note I love seeing peoples reactions of the cars of yesterday. btw seat belts won't save you from the non-collapsible steering column that would impale your chest in a crash :)
Oh man, that's a hell of a head turner :) The column shift is pretty much like normal manual turned sideways, well at least when it's a 4-speed.

Surveyed owners compiled a laundry list of problems, including faulty welds, leaky trunks, and power steering failure. The complex Teletouch shifter was a service nightmare, in part because control wires were routed too close to hot exhaust system parts. Because assembly workers had to use different tools to install some parts distinct from mainstream Ford and Mercury models, it was common practice for dealers to receive unfinished Edsels with the disparate parts chucked in the trunk. Like every all-new car, start-up issues were inevitable during the initial manufacturing months.
I used to have a '59 Edsel Ranger, but mine had a 312, automatic and power steering :) No radio though.
We just found a 58 Edsel Corsair in an old barn. Hooked a battery up to it and the lights and horn work😂

I'm in Australia. Throughout the 1950s, 60 and even into the 70s the "three on the tree" was pretty much the standard gearshift configuration on local cars. Manual transmissions were far more popular than automatics here right into the 90s. I learned to drive in a 1964 EH Holden (Google it. They were quite a pretty car). It was fitted with the 3-speed manual transmission. The gearboxes had no synchromesh on low gear, so most of us became adept at double-clutching to grab low gear in stop/start traffic. If driving the Edsel messed with your head, imagine driving the EH Holden. It was right-hand drive, and while the shift pattern was the same as the Edsel featured, it was on the other side of the steering column!
Thankfully my 59 Corsair has power steering.

Great video i just bought a 59 edsel was barn kept 18 years then garage kept the rest only 34k but mine has a primitive form of power steering i believe, can't wait to get it home

Amazing though how sometimes, it's the INCREDIBLY bad failures that we remember SOOOO well...especially in this case, because I doubt there is a single person today that hasn't heard of the Edsel, yet, the Edsel died a remarkably quick death...most of us have never seen one, been around one or anything because it did fail soooo miserably...yet, we've all heard of it and some of us get curious about it...
Just kinda something interesting to think about...
For all the other guys like David who've never seen this kind of shifter before, now every time you hear an old guy say "3 on the tree" you know what they're talking about. Those old transmissions were actually very common for many years. Strange, but effective.

Wow. Late to the party on this video lol. My great grandpa LOVED this car when he bought it new back in the 60s. Currently looking to restore it to it's former glory in the next few years.

It's cars like this that make me appreciate those nicer cars even more. You know, the Cadillacs, Fords and the Chevys. Cars like this are becoming more and more rare. Once everyone has souped up, bagged, blown every Camaro or C-10 or cobra there will be cars like this, simple yet such a reminder that car companies launched gigantic campaigns to win over the public. Some won...some didn't. This just makes me appreciate where we have come from and where we are headed.

Classic cars are the bomb. My dad has a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, which is the first classic car he's had since I was born. It got me on the classic car thing and I really like those classic cars that aren't very popular or different, for example the Edsel. Just don't hate on the classics, man.
Car looks boss for its age. That column shift looks like a lot of hassle, but I can see where it can be fun. Another great review. Keep'em rolling.
