Love it how they disregard film theory and stick to the "its about making movies and saying something rather than nothing" posture. Thank you for uploading this interview
This is, by a loooong mile, the best interview with the Coens I've ever seen. Eggers doesn't ask banal questions or interrupt them (looking at you, Charlie Rose), they actually seem happy to be there, all three manage to make each other laugh, and they comprehensively cover the entire production. Dave Eggers should do another one of these next time Criterion puts out a Coens film.
Great, such a comprehensive and fascinating interview about a fascinating film, I wish the Coens could do an interview like this for every one of their films. Thank you for posting this.
Blood Simple was a brilliant example of how to make a great film on such a tight budget. I loved it. I'm a Brit who loves noir/neo-noir and only the Americans can do this so well. Blood Simple is a classic. It's so James M Cain or perhaps Jim Thompson. Probably more Jim Thompson, to be honest.
The Coen’s are absolutely the best in the business at building tension with sound design. While the soundtrack is intense and elevates the tension, the movie’s most tense moments come when it’s just the sounds/ambience of the film!
I had the good fortune to see this film when it was still fairly new, quite unknown, before Raising Arizona was released. Outstanding 1984 debut; chock full of suspense, intrigues, darkness, twists. Flawlessly cast; McDormand, Hedaya, Walsh and Getz played their roles to the hilt. But the Director’s Cut was so unnecessary; Williams’ character was just about dropped, the music they used the first time in place of what they couldn’t get was a *lot* more fitting. No need to “improve” on a perfect gem of a crime thriller. Their first real misstep (2001) until Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers remake came out a few years later. It was no wonder to me they followed that disappointing period w/ one of their most acclaimed movies (No Country etc.)
The 1984 film Blood Simple had an estimated budget of $1.5 million and grossed $3,851,855 in the US and Canada during its opening weekend. The film's worldwide gross was $4,262,856. Looks like the investors got back their money.
Most will put their guts into making sure their first film is as good as can be; they’ll take years to create the best screenplay and filming techniques. It’s the sophomore effort that trips many up; that wasn’t the case with The Coens, thankfully.
@TheBornnaked it's based on the "book of Jobe" from the Hebrew Bible. I think it's also a satire of Rabbinical Judaism. I'm not saying you can't appreciate the movie if your not Jewish but it helps.
Saw Blood Simple as a double feature in downtown Denver with The Elephant Man. Two classic films by three classic writer/directors. I absolutely fell in love with both the Coen brothers and David Lynch that. I was on a day day with someone that did not get either films. I knew that person would never be right for me. Blood Simple is what film is and has always been to me. It was a Hitchcock film that did all Hitchcock films other than maybe Psycho. But Blood Simple is just as good as Hitchcock's Psycho. The Coen brother's earliest works were by far their best. I do hope they return to that before exiting this world. Blood Simple also made me life long lovers of the beyond earthly M. Emmett Walsh and Francis McDormand. I just never had time for people that did not have the psychological ability to appreciate Blood Simple. So many elements of this film were original and brilliant.
Such an awesome and fantastic video of them going into depth about the first film. Really interesting you can make an entire documentary about how they make the movie that would be just as interesting as the movie itself
this emphasizes further the adage of how much of the movie is done in casting and ill add the importance of casting (as they say the great Carter Burwell auditioned his music) all the folks on set. I know the Coens even care about the crew and like most great consistent filmmakers work with the same people as much as possible from actors to the music (i mean what collaboration can rank with Carter Burwell in EVERY Coen Bros movie and later teaming with T Bone Burnett...answer is very few to none) and im sure many other of the crew above and below the line..... the team!
to my point YT has me peekng at other c lips of the Coens and in one for lebwoskie ethan calls them lazy for not only casting the same peoople but using the same crew....joel adds we dont have to memorize more phoen numbers.....who knows if they even know that humility is a joking response to filmmaking 101 rule...using the same folks is overall a great idea lol
The Coen Brothers kinda remind me of one of their favorite actors John Turturro. Wes Andersen kinda remind me of two of his favorite actors Luke and Owen Wilson, personality-vise. Maybe director/writers like to hire actors that are similar to themselves.
The worst line in the Coens cannon is when the dude is saying that the nihilists are going to cut off his Johnson, and the dude says something like I need my Johnson, and Donny says, why do you need that dude? Not even Donny would be that naive or stupid. It's the only line that I think the Coens should have rewritten or at least left out
The IBS scenes in The Ladykillers were their nadir, for me anyway. Tom Hanks’ committed performance and the bodies-off-the-bridge ending almost made that misfire worth watching.
Blood Simple is a very good movie but the boyfriend was so stupid that it became stressful to watch. If you find a dead body and that body was shot don’t pick up the Gun that.shot him and put the body in your car. Leave, call the police or bring him to a hospital because any other option us a bad one.
He thinks the girlfriend has shot him and decides to try and cover that up to keep her out of trouble. Foolish? Yes but I guess the act shows he was in love with her. Perhaps my memory is incorrect though, I haven't seen it for 25 years.
Really enjoyed this movie. Sad fo hear that they filmed it in Texas to avoid union labor and didnt pay anyone that worked on it. Thats scummy behavior.
Great movie it’s sad that No Country For Old Men ripped it off and got all the glory I feel bad for these guys there probably bumped out by it but there probably afraid to say it

The Coen Brothers are truly two of the most outstanding, versatile and highly talented filmmakers to grace cinema with their films!

Speaking of which, Buster Scruggs needs the Criterion treatment.
Yes! It's amazing how both brothers seem to be enjoying the interview and not interrupting should be the first requirement of any interviewer.

There's a lot Coen Brothers interviews, and documentaries out there.

But you guys made the third man!

Once you factor in prints and advertising, cinema cut.... maybe.
crazy how good blood simple is for a debut feature. May not be the Coen Brothers’ best film but it’s pretty darn close

I know I'm in the minority, but "A serious man" is my favorite Cohen brother's movie.
Great movie. Having Richard kind play a pedantic, neurotic guy is a bit of a cheat code

Same. I love everything about that movie. The setting, the acting, the music, it all combines so well.
loved it, but I can't really pick a fave.

Brilliant film makers and editing masters, I pray to God they make Blood Meridian. It would make No Country for old men look like a romance.
I'm still waiting for that film. I hadn't thought of these two before but I really am now. Please...
At the very least I hope they adapt literally any McCarthy novel before they retire
tho i was already aware of it, Ethan Coen's humility and creative nature an demaanor are striking inpiring and pretty darn cool.

Very nicely done

The Summer Reading List is safe back at the library, Sisters of the Unfortunate Monastery.
I feel they took the Cohens music score tips for breaking bad and sopranos
Plus: Coens
Minus: Some Dave Eggers content.

Always love their movies …glad they just make kickass movies and don’t put any “messages “ in
They really did learn from Dylan about saying stuff without saying stuff
When are they making Blood Meridian?
I don't think they are.
