I can remembermom taking my sis and i to school one morning andseeing a slow Cotton Belt that had three. I never knew why they had so many as a kid but they were so much fun to see. I enjoyed your video very much, brings back many memories for me. in 1989 i was 13 and would use an audio recorder to record trains in downtown Pine Bluff. Our common traffic was UP and Cotton Belt(SP).
At 18:09 it’s from his backyard. I’d kill to have a railroad like that rolling past my backyard. Thank you so much Ed for sharing these videos with us. This is the NS I grew up with: any lash up of power on any given train. Loved seeing that GP40X. I remember seeing those a few times myself. They only had three: 7000, 7001 and 7002.
Lived in spartanburg 88 to 95 and spent time chasing and watching, and visiting Hayne yard refueling lead. Spent many evenings with Walt and got to point he had me shoving units and moving units he was refueling/sanding...lol...probably not best plan on his part but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Got to ride Saluda Grade on 3279...and catching 611 and 1218 when they showed up. Seems like life time ago. Kids grew up watching trains...eating ice cream on Sundays watching the parade of trains in Fairport west side of spartanburg, east of Central. Good memories.
Grew up beside Big 4 cleveland Columbus line...if it was switching in front of house..I was in cab riding gp7 and GP9s NYCs/PC...had ACY, B&O and NY/PC in Greenwich, Ohio..and laying at night..windows open hot summer nights and hearing the pounding of the double main crossing on B&O/NYC when they both were double track.. Would love to find footage of that era of childhood there. High hood GEs (pre -8) always loved 2nd favorite only HH Sd40-2..think both incredibly attractive units. Thanks for this video..great seeing this era.
I believe I have one of Ed Painters VHS tapes that he recorded there in Central, SC back around 1993. I got the tape when I was little after moving to a new place away from the trains I loved to watch. I got the tape from a family member who knew I loved to watch trains. I grew up in Westminster, SC and as a child, I lived right beside the train tracks and loved watching trains and till this day I still love to watch trains and even chase them from time to time. This really brings back my childhood. I bet I watched that VHS tape every single day for years growing up
I love these old videos. The most fascinating thing is no graffiti. I just can’t get over it. The good old days . I hate the way our rail cars are trashed these days.
Southern Ry. Caboose X488 Caboose seen @7:56 in the Video, is presently preserved at the Craggy Mountain Railroad in Woodfin NC. but is not in it's original paint scheme. it's in a operation Lifesaver paint scheme, but still retains it's number.
I believe when they attach the trailers to the railroad trucks they are called roadrailer trains, i could be mistaken but i don't believe they are still in use. Also it is nice seeing very few dedicated trains like we see so much of nowadays and no Intermodal cars. The railroad industry has changed tremendously over the last 30-40 years, i'm sure 30 years from now it will have changed tremendously from what it is now.

I spent most of August around Central and Liberty documenting the ID change with the NS Intermodals. Its a very senic part of the world and is great for filming trains. Thanks for sharing this footage!
Growing up as a kid visiting NC, my grandpa and uncle would tell me stories about when my grandparents in-laws were living at the time, 6-axle U30 and 33 high hoods plow 150 car mid train coal trains past Saluda in 1971 to 1982. Same with SD45s, GPs, and GP 4.5 and TC10s on long haul road railers and auto parts boxcars flying at 60 MPH.
I didn't realize that Bluefield, VA has been a quite zone as long as it has. Having watched a lot of Ed's stuff on a VHS player, I'm glad it's where the world can see it.
I really like the Painter series. Love seeing the old NS high hoods and them going long hood forward. I love the new 4k and UHD videos, but seeing the videos that were taken on an old camcorder are cool. Is there more to come in the Painter series?
Bombers didn't tag freight generally back then, only metro systems like the NYS subway. For a long time this held. Like, really long time. Then the internet came along and these same writers realized that their tags could travel essentially anywhere the rails go on this continent and be seen by anyone. There's a whole subculture around it now on the internet.
Those were the good old days I was 4 yrs old back then and got excited when the trains went by

the Cockabooses are in Columbia, SC sitting on the old spur at 1040 Key Road.
What amazes me is that even 30+ years ago those 50' Railbox cars look just as terrible then as they do now still passing by on their way to Mexico.

Also the 3511 was a B307A1. Rare unit ever built. Something about the locomotive that had a 1 after the A meaning the A is a 12 cylinder unit.
