Good job getting slow enough on short final and having some power until near the touchdown. This eliminates the need to round out and hold off, which can be a long ride as passenger especially with your wing loading. Good job staying in ground effect, which small Continental engines appreciate for acceleration to safe maneuvering airspeed. The Chief is slow enough to get more than one soft field landing in order to have a bit more time in slow and low ground effect. I call this hover taxi and it give a bit more accurate landing stall recognition than slow flight at altitude because stall will be well below Vso in low ground effect. Good job. Ahh, thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. I think my biggest hurdle right now is just coming in too hot. Up here in the sticks, I like to keep a healthy margin of altitude in the pattern (especially with a long runway below) and that leads to coming over the numbers a bit hotter than I’d like. I think I’m going to spend some time in the valley soon at some of the more open airports and work on some power off 180s and try to get a better feel for glide distance so I feel more comfortable stretching out my approaches up here in the hills.
During my quest for the perfect landing in my trusty Super Chief, I decided that it just doesn’t like asphalt! Out of 80 plus tries, my best two touch-downs were on grass - two in a row where I couldn’t tell I had touched down except for the roll of the wheels!

Oh I forgot. Good job also with dynamic proactive rudder (walking the rudder) to maintain longitudinal alignment.

Ahh! Yeah, I’ve been wanting to test her out on the grass. But, might have to wait until spring. It’s been quite wet around here this winter.
