I'm almost 73-years-old. This documentary about this extremely wealthy family, is truly sobering, especially part 2, which we, in 2023, can identify most with.

Having only this documentary as a yardstick, there certainly is no value to being born a Getty. All that money and the connections that are derived from it and not one happy Getty in the lot.

Crazy. It's like a silent invisible explosive device went off in this family & tore up every family member. They all feel like walking wounded, like broken wind-up toys going round & round in pointless circles. It's just so odd.
Btw, Andrew Getty (1:36:13) is already dead. He died in 2015 from intestinal bleeding complicated by meth use. His brother John is also dead from accidental fentanyl overdose in 2020. They're both sons of the 'composer' Gordon Getty who pays orchestras to perform his music.

This is absurd. He could have given his family an happy, decent and secure life. Instead, his negligence and lack of affection doomed them all. And the money he had could’ve helped so many people. Was there something neurological amiss with him? He can’t have been normal, can he?

I mean, this was a tough man, I wish I had half of his guts plus some of his business brain, just coz you are related to him doesn't mean you automatically become a rich person. All this negative comments but I think that this was a very brilliant man who managed to beat all odds and become the world's richest man despite his father having left him only a little fortune, So he has his flaws ,so what? we are not all perfect humans and making money does not come easy, anyway he decides to spend his money is none of our business, look for your own money.

Lets connect the dots: he (the grandson) said to his future wife to get rid of her husband to marry him. Then somebody sold him to the Italian mafia. Well it could be her ex husband.

I think the problem with the family is not so much the money as the disconnect with the whole family. Huge lack of emotion from JPG that filtered down with him not being with his sons. It is a pity that younger generations couldn't have a full loving family. Most of us manage it on very little wealth.

John Paul Getty shows all the signs of suffering from a cluster B personality disorder. Narcissistic personality disorder or more likely antisocial personality disorder given his singlemindedness to achieve. You can't give what you don't have. His poor children never had a dad because he was incapable of being one, and therefore never had a chance. But before vilifying him, realize his personality was created by his own childhood. This is generational damage playing out. I am sad for all of them.

Give it a rest. Supposedly having a personality disorder doesn’t excuse predatory choices and abusive behavior. He was a p o s. Making excuses is typical postmodernist stoopodity. Stay away from children and don’t have children if you have one and stop making excuses for these males.

2 million Dollars Ransom in 1973, today is 14 million. I can't believe they actually asked for a lot more, but when they accepted the lower $2 Million, I can understand because its a frigiin lot of money.
The money he left in his will, $80,000 is now worth about $430,000. So not really much for his long suffering mistress.
$1 Million is roughly $5.4 Million. So a decent amount.

And Jesus said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Matthew 19:23-26

Being wealthy is not a sin. It's how you view being wealthy. Many wealthy people have donated lots of their money in the service of God. Examples in the Bible are the Israelites donating gold and fine clothing for the tabernacle. David donating his wealth for the temple. Even the rich man who gave up his tomb for jesus body to be buried. Then there are the Christians who donated their wealth to finance the preaching work in the first century. But im sure your thinking of the wealthy people who use that wealth only to make themselves richer and do little or nothing with it to help promote the kingdom preaching work or those truly in need.

1:50. Money allows you to do things you want do but can't do any other way. As we all know. It can't fulfill your life. With it your allowed to have very high highs and very low lows over anyone else who don't have your kind of money.

If only he knew he couldn't be buried with all his treasure like some Egyptian Pharaoh? He should have thought that part out before he started on that museum so that he would have had a resting place on the grounds without a 3+ year waiting period just to be buried elsewhere.

I've watched the long British interview. He does seem to be extremely low-key and shy. Rarely smiling, but like he wants to connect. I think his shyness and social discomfort is what led people to believe he was aloof and mean. Maybe he just didn't know how to loosen up and play ball with his boys.
