- Sitting idol in Pontiac Michigan sat one of the most infamous abandoned stadiums In the world, one with a rich history and beloved by many locals. As the years went on, people began to ask what was going to happen with this structure and as development ideas fell through, it continued to sit. After my 2017 Abandoned episode on it, the future was uncertain with a possible demolition on the horizon. Today however, I'm revisiting the topic and seeing what has been done to this iconic stadium and what currently occupies the land. Join me on this 2021 update to the Pontiac Silverdome.

I remember watching the failed demolition and all the jokes that were being made here in Michigan when that happened about “one last false start in honor of the lions”
I'm always sad when stadiums are demolished, because I can't help but think about how proud the builders must have been when it opened and how sad they'd be seeing it blown up.
The astrodome is one of the few domes that isn't demolished.
@@hectorlopez1069 That stadium could've been saved a few years back if the 100+ million dollar proposal wasn't rejected by judge Hidalgo. At this rate, it's certainly going in the direction of demolition.

@@Fuji086 It was essentially because of politics. She said a 100+ million dollar proposal would not be enough money to make the stadium usable in working order again. Which is incorrect. The Stadium had proper maintenance done to it prior to the rejection of this proposal. Keep in mind, the Astrodome stadium was in much better shape than the Pontiac Silverdome even though it was over 10 years older. It was located in a great location (right next to a football stadium).
The problem was Hidalgo herself. She essentially pulled the plans to save the Astrodome because it didn't fit her agenda and she wanted to focus on flood control...
I'm just gonna be honest, that's a pretty bad decision. 100+ million is a comfortable amount of money. You don't need to pull a huge fortune into something like this. With that kind of money, you can certainly get something done.
Let's just say, I won't be voting for her in the future.
Costs are going to continue to skyrocket because they decided to halt any plans to save the Astrodome which means the stadium is definitely sitting abandoned as I speak. It's ridiculous.
I almost cried when they blew up the stadium. So much history was in that place. My grandpa still remembers going to wrestlemania 3 and he was upset when he heard that the silverdome was getting demolished. R.I.P. Silverdome
I grew up in Rockford MI. I was in the High School Marching Band and every year we got to march in a half time show during a Lions pre season game. It is a great memory. This was 1997-2001.
I’m curious to know what the community thinks of getting a gigantic Amazon building in their backyard?
Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat wrestled arguably the best match is wrestling history in that building!
@@scottcol23 wow... Small world, we probably went to high school together, I graduated 99. Lived on a lake there as a kid. Just clicked on this because I remembered going to the silverdome and wanted to see what happened.
I used to work in the main event restaurant during football season years ago. Fun times for sure :(
I remember seeing a live feed of the first implosion attempt and laughing when it didn't come down. I wasn't aware that the successful implosion was the very next day. Very cool that you got a piece of the turf!
I remember when they blew up the Met Center here (1960s arena across the street from the Mall of America), after the Minnesota North Stars hockey team moved to Dallas. Something went wrong and only about half of it fell down; the rest had to be knocked down later. The site is now an Ikea and parking/planned future expansion space for the MoA.

Was there for it along with a ton of other people. The first one failed just like the Lions did every year. Volkswagen wagon had to move all those cars shortly thereafter. Hello Amazon.
A former Lions player pushed the button to begin the initial demolition. The joke going around was that Lions even blew the blow up.
The Silverdome's existence was erased just like the chances of the Lions ever winning a Superbowl with Barry Sanders.

The fact Nevada might allow companies to have their own work towns that they control everything, I won't be shocked in a decade or so Amazon owning a bunch of towns/cities in the US.
It's still crazy to me that the Silverdome, Palace just down the road, and Joe Louis Arena all were torn down within a few years of each other. Go back some years and you can add Tiger Stadium to the list too, all historical Detroit sports venues.
I'm still pissed off about Tiger Stadium. I've visited Fenway Park quite a few times and they do just fine there with that classic structure. Shame on them for leaving.
What has happened to Detroit overall is so sad. Once the 4th largest city in America, it is now 24th.
Now the oldest sports venue place we have left is... Comerica Park... Ouch.

The Palace was the one that shocked me, I remember when it opened, and I'm not even that old. I saw The Cure there.
My great grandpa worked at the silverdome. He was the director of operations there. He would walk on the roof and did a bunch of other stuff. We also have a chair from the silverdome. It’s honestly sad to see the place go.

Do you know why they didn't auction or sell more of the stadium chairs? Such a shame to see them all go to waste; seems like fans would've wanted them.
@@briantucker5615 if you live in the metro Detroit area, there is a store at Lakeside Mall that has seats from the silver dome, Joe Louis, etc. haven’t really seen many outside of that though.

Really should just have the games hosted by one city for about 5-10 years then vote on a new one.
I worked at the Silver Dome from 1996 through 1998 in the Main Event Banquet facility. I have been on all levels, the field, coaches offices, locker rooms, gym, film room, luxury game suites, kitchen, bar, storage rooms and even the practice field. It was sad to see it decline so badly them be destroyed. It was an amazing place in it's day.

Having Amazon replace the lot totally makes sense but is also the most boring of solutions :(
Boring? Yes. But fits in a lot better with its surroundings, since there are a lot of business parks in the area and north of where it was, is all housing.
I still think they should have put a hotel/casino in that spot
I thought it would make a good small amusement park. Especially with the fact it was an area for the community to come together.
On the upside, at least there are new jobs in Pontiac, instead of a old stadium that is well past it's prime time.
Of course, having Amazon coming in, and transferring the aera with little regard for the Stadium, is worrying. I mean we put plaques on sunken ships. But not one for Pontiac Stadium?

It's amazing just how short the lifespan of these huge stadiums is. Some of the older ones like Wrigley Field have been around for over 100 years.

The Silverdome and Joe Louis Arena were built by owners who wanted to do things on the cheap, and it showed.
I am from North Europe, and as a wrestling child i was back then.... This place holds that holy grail of Professional-Wrestling when Hulk Hogan faced Andre The Giant! 93.000+ ppl. It was the epitome of sports entertainment back then when the whole world was watching!! Sad what happened to the Silverdome but it was a long time ago. Giants fall but memories lives forever!
I saw Hogan slam the Giant there when I was 6.

I was there with friends, I was about 18 at the time. But the monsters of rock 🪨 when Metallica came on the entire place 110,000 people throwing toilet paper everyone standing on the seats and air guitar hair swinging jam. That was music history. So sad.
Yep I know Pontiac silver dome as one of the venues WWF (wwe) would advertise on every show when they would announce the upcoming events and where they would be held. This one stuck with me because I liked Pontiac firebirds and Pontiac silver dome sounded cool when I was a kid.
Had they built the stadium closer to Downtown Detroit, it probably would still be standing. Maybe as a College Bowl or for a City University.
The Hubert Humphrey Metrodome is a good example of what happens to a domed stadium in an urban setting.
If it was built closer to Detroit it likely would have come down even sooner, as the land would have been worth even more, and there would be more developers interested in it. Ford Field already hosts a college bowl game.

Detroit has a much nicer stadium downtown called Ford Ford, that host a college bowl game just like the Silverdome did. And as someone who has a sit from the Silverdome in my living room and when to many events there it was a dump.
Over in Athens Georgia there was an old railroad bridge that gained a little bit of Fame after it was used in one of REM's album covers back in the 1980s.
When it was faced with demolition at the start of the millennium (2000) the city purchased it but didn't do anything to maintain it so 20 years later they've come in and fully demolished it to build a new bridge for a rail trail.
As far as I know I was one of the last few people to actually document the bridge before, during and after its demolition.

At least they didn’t try to develop a new shopping mail, unless you consider Amazon the replacement for all shopping malls in the United Stats.

This is a fair point but they could have gone with mixed used mid rises for residential and commercial, especially because it is well situated between two major routes to take people to work closer to Detroit.

Yup. And 50 years from now, all those Amazon buildings will be gone and everything you need will be 3D printed on site.
This brings back memories. From the nose bleed seats for the first Lions pre-season game(the roof wasn't finished yet) to the second row at a Pistons game. Tractor pulls, Rodeo, Motocross, High School football playoffs, soccer games. I was even there for a business lunch the day after the roof collapsed in a storm in 1988.

Wow! My High School graduation was at the Silverdome in the late '80s. Went to many Supercross's and Truck Pulls as well. What a unique venue and will always have good memories there.
I really recommend you do a video about San Diego's former Qualcomm Stadium. Similar story, the NFL abandoned the city for a new stadium in LA, so giant Qualcomm stood unused for a while, eventually being demolished and the entire area being redeveloped into a new college campus and residential and commercial and river park district.
I went to see a baseball game at Qualcomm - everyone on the field looked like dots, it was so horrible.
The NFL didn't abandon it, Dean Spanos did.
I remember going to the silverdome in 98 and 99 for a George Strait concert. Unfortunately, it's also where my father in law passed away of a heart attack climbing the stairs inside as he was attending Monster Jam in 2002. I never got to meet him. So my wife and I both have some experiences from it.
WrestleMania 3 was the most iconic WrestleMania ever and the "slam heard round the world" took place at the Silverdome!!
I remember going to my very first concert as a kid, in 1984. I won tickets to go to the Jackson 5 victory tour, at the silverdome. Sound quality was terrible for concerts (The Palace was much better), but it was still an incredible facility. Also managed the catch some lions games and even a pistons game, the first time I ever saw them play Michael Jordan in person. Lions games were great as it was loud!! Now, both the palace and the silverdome are just a memory.

I'm more or less surprised that there wasn't even an attempt for the Silverdome's memorialization in some way.
Yeah, they could have at least gotten some of the Silverdome seats and put them in the lobby (though perhaps I shouldn't speak; for all I know they did just that).

Why? It was a failure as a stadium for loser team. Personally I wish the lions would leave The state.
@@sweedish9184 Everyone forgets the Pistons played there, and did pretty well at the end. They never won it all there, but they went to Game 7 of the conference finals against the Celtics in '87, losing Game 5 by one point and Game 7 by 3 points. Then they went to Game 7 of the finals against the Lakers in '88, losing Game 6 by a point and Game 7 by 3 points. They moved to the Palace just in time to win back-to-back titles, but knocking out Jordan and Bird in one playoff run in '88 was a pretty special way to cap off their Silverdome stay (especially considering those playoff home games had gigantic crowds for NBA games).
Back in the day, this was a premium NFL venue. It looked awesome on TV. Some great games were played here.
It was not premium in any way, shape, or form. Ford Field is better in every way. It was built on the cheap with no intention of satisfying fans.
Fun Fact: the pontiac silverdome hosted the public debut of Bob Chandler's Bigfoot monster truck in 1984.
There's a famous amateur video of the event where the crowd went so crazy for it that they flooded into the floor of the stadium and congregated around Bigfoot which was parked on top of some junk cars, bob chandler was so concerned about someone trying to steal the truck that he locked the doors pocketed the keys and laid down on the floor of the cab.
A year later Bigfoot would return to the silverdome along with Everett Jasmer's USA #1 and they would perform the first simultaneous car crush demonstration at a USHRA sanctioned event (along with a mud bog run each), this event would be broadcast live and captured on film as part of a special called Battle Of The Monster Trucks which aired in december of '85 and would be followed by two more tv specials: Return Of The Monster Trucks/War Of The Monster Trucks in '86 & '87.

I was there to see Bigfoot crush cars in public for the first time. It was incredible and the crowd went crazy. Some say that night was the birth of the monster truck industry. The Silverdome was one of Bob Chandlers favorite venues. He debuted a lot of future Bigfoot vehicles there. A lot of Bigfoot history and monster truck history along with Wrestlemania 3, concerts and sporting events took place in that building. It’s ashamed the stadium fell into the wrong hands of a real estate company for just over a half million dollars that had no idea how to maintain or operate a football stadium and let it deteriorate away.

There used to be an almost 2 hour compilation video of every monster truck event at the silverdome from 1984 until 1992 on this site (I think it got deleted).
I probably watched it 100 times, there was some really cool footage from the earliest events including commentary free races from '85/'86/'87 shot up close on the floor of the stadium with just the sounds of the engines and junk cars being crushed.
There really was something special about the atmosphere at those events and it's a shame that the USHRA (now Monster Jam) destroyed everything in their tape library dated before 1998 in the early 00's because they want the world to forget what indoor motorsports used to be.

My Dad and sister saw Michael Jackson’s Victory Tour at the Silverdome.
I went in 1999 on New Year’s Eve to the Metallica concert.

I worked security at those Jackson shows. First concert I ever saw metal detector wands being used on people; I was one of the West Gate security people with one. We had to frisk people from ankle to knee, too, as one of the first people in line at one of the other gates had railroad flares in his cowboy boots. We found at least 2 knives at our gate that first night (of three).
I remember being there for the 1991-92 Playoff game against the Cowboys and Detroit winning 38-6. I was a freshman in high school then...times sure have changed!
Thanks for doing an update on the Silverdome’s saga. Obviously Amazon has a habit of categorically erasing previous evidence of its structural locations, but it’s owners were really the culprits in the stadium’s untimely death. Most of us in the Metro Area were generally happy they finally cleared it out, cause we’ve got serious issues all over of basically this exact same case. I’d recommend looking into the Book Tower as another possible video.
It was upsetting to see the stadium demise and removal as well as Boblo Island since I grew up in Michigan it was sad to see them go.

As a kid I grew up going to Thanksgiving Day games with my dad and my brother. It was these memories of watching Barry in the 90’s that still has me hooked as a fan still today. It’s sad for me to see the Silverdome gone. My father also passed in 2016. We have a picture of us all together in the dome. It’s sad that my brother and I are the only 2 left from that picture. Ford Field just doesn’t have the same appeal to me… definitely miss the good old days quite a lot!
Wish you would do a report like this on the Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Plant, which was enormous and is now gone with Amazon sitting on top of portions of it.

I remember getting off i95 at sparrows point road and looking out over the flat ground where the plant was. Unbelievable. Good Union jobs producing American steel replaced with low wage package picking Chinese junk. A metaphor for the failure and absolute betrayal of our leaders going along with deindustrialization for the service economy.
We road tripped from Pittsburgh to the Steelers play the Lions there, once Ford Field was built in Detroit this place became a white elephant.
So sad....I saw Guns N Roses and Metallica there as well as a few Lions games featuring the legendary Barry Sanders. Also when I first got into basketball, the Pistons played their home games there. The Silverdome will always hold a special place in my heart.

The whole “if you weren’t from here, you’d never know what used to be there” is exactly what it’s like with reunion arena and the cowboys stadium, being from DFW.
Every time I drive by the old Texas Stadium site it bums me out. It always brings me back to the hay day of the Cowboys.

I watched WrestleMania 3, which was hosted at the Pontiac Silverdown, LIVE on closed circuit television on March 29, 1987. The WWF broke the world indoor attendance record that night: 93,173 fans. Phenomenal building. Great memory.
The one and only time I was in the Silverdome was to see Pink Floyd led by David Gilmour in 1987. As we approached through the parking lot, we could hear loud and clear that a sound check was going on inside. The fabric dome did nothing to hide it from the outside world. What a great show to see from the first row!
explored the silverdome back in 2016 and it was unreal. it was kinda wild how they had 24/7 security on premises but the front doors were literally just open. you could just walk right in lol

I shed a tear the day(s) that the Pontiac Silverdome was demolished. My Dad took me and my Grandfather there to see the helicopters carry the roof panels up to be installed in 1974 I believe.
As an adult, I worked occasionally at the Silverdome, sold tickets, answered phones, transported patrons in golf carts, attended many events, concerts, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions games, the indoor fair, tractor pulls, wrestling, etc. and I remember rollerblading on the Club and Upper Level on certain nights of the week when there were no events.
There will always be a special place in my heart for this building.
I remember seeing our local high school football team playing there in the class C finals in the 70s. Our team lost but I remember being fascinated by the Pontiac Silverdome. Too bad that it was demolished but happy to see that Amazon is there creating jobs with their distribution center.
Reminds me of the H.H.H. Metrodome we had in Minneapolis. It was demolished back in 2014 over issues of the roof collapsing 5 times in its life span of 32 years! Now an entirely new stadium sits atop the site of “The Dome”, lots of memories no one will get back. Something cool they did though was sell the seats out of the stadium, and my high school bought a couple sets and put them into its football stadium. No longer under a dome but still serving loyal fans to this day!
Because of the air-supported roof, they had mostly revolving doors to exit. At the end of Lions games, monster trucks or WWF, those spinning doors moved at serious speed and so many times did I see peoples hands or ankles caught in one. Besides the sticky concourse floors and very long walk from the parking lot, don't remember much else about the place. Although I did play my high school football championship game there in 1992.
The difference in air pressure was noticeable. Enough to bother your ears.
It's sad that I only was at the Pontiac Silverdome ONCE in my lifetime: it was Monster Jam 2001, and I can still feel the roar of those engines in my chest all these years later! Hell, I was at the Palace of Auburn Hills just three times: a Vipers hockey game, Jay Leno's _Stimulus Show,_ and saw the Harlem Globetrotters court-side. I never was at Joe Louis Arena, but every avid Red Wings fan I know said the same thing: cramped is an understatement. I'm a life-long Michigander and still refuse to believe they're gone.
The last time I was at JLA was for a Rush concert in 2008, and I couldn't believe how run down it was getting. I'd been there in 2005 for Nine Inch Nails, and I had seats 5 rows off of center ice, and they were being held together by duct tape. It wasn't in much better shape when I was at that Rush show.
Being from the area, great memories were had at the Silverdome!! Even though it was bittersweet to see it go, it's better than looking at the blight!
I saw The Who at the Silverdome in 1975. It was one of the very first events at the new stadium. They didn't even have the heat up and running at the time. It was December, I think. Kinda cold in there but we didn't care : )

I remember well seeing Elton John perform at the Silverdome in 1976 for his Rock of the Westies Tour. He gave a superb concert. Starting with appearing in a Statue of Liberty outfit (complete with burning torch), singing Grow Some Funk of Your Own, he mesmerized the enormous crowd the entire time. Watching the Lions there as well was a treat. Such a marvelous stadium in it's day. Sad to see it go, but glad Amazon has taken over the site and is employing so many people with much-needed jobs. Having played youth football on the field I remember the sheer size of the stadium and being so mesmerized by it all so many memories!!!
It’s great timing that this video came out today. Two weeks ago my family and I saw the Fulfillment Center off of M-59 going to dinner in Auburn Hills. Out of all of the things I expected to go there, that was definitely not in my mind, I should’ve expected it from the South Park Episode. I thought I would’ve known that they were doing something to the property sooner, but I guess I saw the finished product instead! I never personally went to the Silverdome, but my relatives had been there and my Uncle worked on some of the structures on the property as well. I’m definitely sad that is gone (more upset about the Palace of Auburn Hills, a lot of memories there), but it’s definitely a new start and honestly not an eyesore anymore. All of the Michiganders who went there or at least saw it like I did will always think of it when we drive down that stretch of M-59.

I live in West Michigan and had been to the Silverdome a few times for Lions games and saw The Monsters of Rock tour (front row for $25.50 to see Van Halen, The Scorpions, Metallica and others). While I am sad it is only a memory now, I am glad to see the land being put to use.

I couldn’t believe the size of the Silverdome. I went to Monster Jam with my family in 2004. I remember getting to meet the drivers before the event. And the retro Big Boy advertisement on the inside. So much nostalgia.
If I recall they finally demolished the Summit Place Mall in Pontiac (a dead mall that they also has issues with) a couple years later but I had some good time at the Silverdome mainly for the Monster Truck Shows and some Supercross events also.
I remember going to the Sliverdome for Monster truck shows too! Did they actually demo Summit Place Mall finally? I know that Kia dealership has stuck with the name though (get out of my head!).
I can remember when the place opened and was called the "PonMet" lol. I remember attending Superbowl 16 at the PonMet and Diana Ross singing the anthem.
With everything erased, a large part of the immaterial memorial is actually your video efforts! You know damn well, but it can never be stressed too much.
Crazy how iconic structures can be erased and forgotten. But at least that area has gone on to being used instead of wasting away.
I have a few memories of the Silverdome. I attended several Lions games there in the late 80's/early 90's. I also attended the NCAA Men's Basketball Midwest Regional Finals when Christian Laettner and Duke were on their way to a national championship. Unfortunately, too many sports venues become disposable after a relatively short life...
yes. i was there March 1991 to see Ohio state lose to St Johns - sweet 16. OSU was the 1 seed, big upset.
I purchased your Doc "Closed for storm" I live in New Orleans and Worked at Jazz Land in 2003 when I was 20. I was in the park several times over the years since the closing. once in 2006. and then in 2010. I just want to say you did a wonderful job showing how it struggled for so many years yet was a place full of fun and happiness.

As someone who lives in Michigan and who drives past the Silverdome/Amazon fulfillment center daily to get to college, I can say its sad to see the Silverdome go as me and my dad would go to the supercross races there, but its nice to see big businesses coming in, with the combination of M1 concourse and amazon its making the drab outskirts of Pontiac nice again.
I remember watching the Lions play while being in the cheap seats : ) The cigar and cigarette smoke was so thick that by the 4th qtr, the opposite end of the stadium was hidden.

We had season tickets at every stadium in the Detroit area that's been torn down. Really miss Tiger Stadium the most followed by the Palace. Had a luxury box at the Palace. So spoiled.
We used to keep track of the fights that would break out at the 'dome -- 22 in one game was the most we seen. You could see it really easy from security running up the stairs.
Ah yes, Tiger Stadium. While I can understand why they tore that building down, they should've put something else there that was more respectful than the housing complex that ended up going on the site.
Spent 3 years in Waterford as an Army recruiter in mid to late 90s. I went to one game at the Silverdome, a Monday Night Game vs the 49ers, my team. We lost a close game to the Lions. As I lived in Mt. Clemens, I drove past it most days on the way to work. It never failed to impress me, the sheer size of it.

Born and raised in Pontiac, MI. So many memories at the Silverdome. I have a Pontiac Silverdome road signs hanging in my garage. Kinda sad to see it abandoned

Wow, yeah...good times there. I grew up and lived 5 minutes from there and drove by there every day for many years. It was very sad to see it go. Still strange to see it gone when I do go down to that area. I have to give Amazon kudos for really refreshing that area up though, after the dome was gone, I think it looks great. Also sad that they blew the Palace down too.

Nice video, I saw your previous video on the Silverdome, and like you, wondered what happened to it, I totally forgot about it until this video, again, thank you for the follow up.
Its so crazy because I remember going to the siverdome as a kid and when it got taken down I heard and felt it on the ground because I live near it in Pontiac. I have lived in Pontiac all my life and when it happened I was at home and I had just got home from school. And its literally like a 5 to 10 minute walk from my granny’s house.
I felt both implosions in Waterford, shook my house like an earthquake. It was a sad day when the Silverdome finally came down :(
I remember going there as a kid to watch monsterjam with my brother, dad, and grandpa. And the soccer field near the stadium on the property from the overhead views is where I played soccer a few times before the stadium was demolished back in high school. It's crazy to think it's all gone.
I've watched closed for Strom at least 4 times and watched for updates waiting for it to come out
I went there in late 2012 for a marching band convention. beautiful stadium but it was very undertaken care of by then. I wish it could’ve been saved because it was truly a piece of sports and Michigan history

Great update Jake, I live in this area and can tell you Amazon is taking over (including the former Hazel Park Raceway and Liberty Sports Complex)! I do hiring for my company in this area and have brought on so many former Amazon employees, it is very sad to hear how they treat their employees.

As a lions fan (sadly) and a Michigan resident I always find it sad that it was replaced and never really used. From what some of my relatives have said it was a nice stadium. It was larger than Ford Field. I just wish I could have seen it but sadly I was born after the lions moved.
I went to 2 games there; the best part was that even the last row upper deck seats were still pretty close to the field. Visiting teams used to comment all the time that it felt like the fans were almost on top of them.

I am born and raised in Michigan and have many memories of the Silverdome and I drive by the new amazon buildings every day! Another video you could make would be the Palace of Auburn Hills. It was a historical stadium that many modern stadiums to this day are modeled after and even to the day it was torn down it was beautiful! I worked there for a few years from 2015 to 2018 and would love to give you some insight if you decide to make a video on it. It really was a great stadium that should not have been demolished and it still upsets me to this day!
I made it to work late to say my last goodbyes watching it get demoed. It was so sad to see it go and it was VERY sudden too. Especially after they spent all that money renovating it!
