Strakapoud velký (Dendrocopos major) je široce rozšířený šplhavec z čeledi datlovitých (Picidae). Vyskytuje se na všech kontinentech východní polokoule s výjimkou Austrálie, na svém rozsáhlém areálu rozšíření přitom tvoří 14 poddruhů.
Popis
Délka: asi 22,5 cm
Černobíle zbarvený pták s červenými spodními krovkami ocasními.
U pohlaví je vyvinut nápadný pohlavní dimorfismus - samci mají na rozdíl od samic červený týl.
Výskyt
Jeho areál rozšíření pokrývá celou Evropu s výjimkou Islandu, severu Skandinávského poloostrova a Irska. Početně zasahuje také na asijský kontinent, kde obývá široký pruh v rozmezí od její západní části až po Čínu a Japonsko, izolovaně obývá i severozápad Afriky. Byl však již zastižen i daleko odsud, např. v Severní Americe či na Faerských ostrovech. Velikost jeho globálního areálu rozšíření není vzhledem k jeho značné velikosti vyhodnocena, přesně vyčíslena není ani jeho globální populace, která čítá na 73,5 - 216 milionů jedinců.
Jeho přirozeným biotopem jsou lesy všech typů, běžně se však vyskytuje i v parcích a zahradách.
V České republice je pak zdaleka nejběžnějším zástupcem řádu šplhavců.
Chování
Zjara je výrazný díky svému „bubnování“ do kůry stromů, ale i do plechových částí budov, např. do kopulí kostelů. Účel tohoto pro strakapoudy typického chování je přilákat zástupce opačného pohlaví na své území a zároveň i odehnat možné územní konkurenty.
Bubnování strakapouda velkého je krátké, tvořeno přibližně 10-15 údery za sekundu a náhle končící. Preferuje při něm přitom stromy duté nebo hnijící, u kterých se zvuk rozléhá lépe, což má za následek i větší hlasitost samotného bubnování.
Klepáním do stromů také hledá potravu nebo místo pro hnízdění.
Hnízdí v dutinách stromů, které si sám hloubí většinou vysoko ve ztrouchnivělých stromech. V jedné snůšce pak bývá 4-7 smetanově bílých vajec.
Potrava
Přes léto v jeho potravě převažují malí bezobratlí živočichové, občas plení i hnízda jiných ptáků; přes zimu, kdy je živočišné stravy nedostatek, požírá zejména různé plody.
Hlas
Ozývá se nejčastěji krátkým, ale výrazným kik (často v řadě jako ki-ki-ki-ki) nebo kix, při vzrušení také skřípavým čret čret nebo gigigigi. Mláďata v hnízdě se pak ozývají hlasitým detdetdet.

The great spotted woodpecker is closely related to some other members of its genus. It has a number of subspecies, some of which are distinctive enough to be potential new species. It has a huge range and large population, with no widespread threats, so it is classed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Description
Medium-sized woodpecker with pied black and white plumage and a red patch on the lower belly.
Males and young birds also have red markings on the neck or head.
Habitat
This species is found across Eurasia and parts of North Africa. Across most of its range it is resident, but in the north some will migrate if the conifer cone crop fails.
Some individuals have a tendency to wander, leading to the recent recolonisation of Ireland and to vagrancy to North America.
Behaviour
Great spotted woodpeckers chisel into trees to find food or excavate nest holes, and also drum for contact and territorial advertisement; they have anatomical adaptations to manage the physical stresses from the hammering action.
It breeds in holes excavated in living or dead trees, unlined apart from wood chips. The typical clutch is four to six glossy white eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs, feed the chicks and keep the nest clean. When the young fledge they are fed by the adults for about ten days, each parent taking responsibility for feeding part of the brood.
Diet
The great spotted woodpecker occurs in all types of woodlands and is catholic in its diet, being capable of extracting seeds from pine cones, insect larvae from inside trees or eggs and chicks of other birds from their nests.
Voice
The call of the great spotted woodpecker is a sharp kik, which may be repeated as a wooden rattling krrarraarr if the bird is disturbed. The courtship call, gwig, is mostly given in the display flight. The great spotted woodpecker drums on dead trees and branches, and sometimes suitable man-made structures, to maintain contact between paired adults and to advertise ownership of territory.
Both sexes drum, although the male does so much more often, mostly from mid-January until the young are fledged. The far-carrying drumming is faster than for any other woodpecker in its range at around 10-16 strikes per second, typically in one-second bursts, although repeated frequently.
