Captain Kirk (William Shatner) delivers an emotional eulogy for his friend Spock.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is fondly regarded as being the closest in spirit to the 1966-69 TV series that spawned it. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) escapes the tedium of a desk job to join Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) on another space mission. While boldly going where no man etc. etc., Kirk crosses the path of his old enemy Khan (Ricardo Montalban), who as any die-hard Trekker can tell you, was the chief antagonist in the 1966 Trek TV episode "Space Seed." Leading a crew of near-savage space prisoners, Khan insinuates himself into the Genesis Project, which is designed to introduce living organisms on long-dead planets. Intending to harness this program for his own despotic purposes, Khan engages in battle with the Enterprise crew.

Damn, whatever you want to say about Shatner's acting ability, this clip proves he can absolutely nail it when he's properly directed. Easily surpasses any of the rebooted movies.

Imagine Spock being buried to the Beastie Boys.
The bagpipes just add so much of a beautiful touch. It's all woven together so seamlessly. I think I cry every time when I've had a little bit to drink. A toast to the movies that made the whole thing worthwhile.
A smart script with excellent writing that holds true to Roddenberry's vision. I miss when Trek was intelligently written. Shatner shines in these movies, and gets a chance to show his full talent.
All the CG in the world can't hide poor writing and a lack of vision.
R.I.P. Leonard Nimoy. Out of all the souls in Hollywood, yours was the most... human. :(

Nobody ever talks about it, but the transition from Amazing Grace on the bagpipes to the non-diagetic version is possibly the greatest piece of sound design in Star Trek history.

I would have loved for horner to go back like he did with Titanic's music and do a full single of amazing grace, orchestra. I had never heard it played that way before just always the traditional bagpipe version until I saw this as a young boy and have always loved it and hungered for the full, not short of his interpretation.

This scene is definitely in the top 10 best acting of the 1980s. It was so good, the director re-used it in Star Trek III.

In the script, Kirk was going to go on, but then looks at Bones, who has tears streaming down his face. I wish they had kept that in. After all the bickering those two had in the series and despite their differences, seeing Bones cry for someone who in the end was like family would've made this that much more powerful.

Yes, that was a good piece of writing. But in the movie I think with a crying Vulcan we already got enough. Everything else would just have bloated the scene.
@@normanroscher7545 Spock was Saavik's mentor, the one who rescued her from Hellguard. I can't blame her for crying. Read "The Pandora Principal" and "Vulcan's Heart". Even T'Pol cried in "Enterprise" and she wasn't half Romulan like Saavik. I like Saavik's vulnerability here. It shows that while she's tough and aloof, she still has feelings.
Well, at least Bones got a great scene with Spock before they arrived at Vulcan.
@@DavidNicholson101 Yeah, I think Bones line in The Search for Spock was perfect. "I'm gonna tell you something that I... never thought I'd ever hear myself say. But it seems I've... missed you. And I don't know if I could stand to lose you again." In a lot of ways, Star Trek III was really DeForest Kelley's movie. He had to play both McCoy and Spock.
@@virginiaconnor8350 In the original concept for Star Trek VI, the character of Valeris was supposed to be Saavik. IIRC, it was also supposed to be revealed that she was half Romulan. If that's the case, the tears in this scene would have been a perfect precursor.

Spock was more human than everyone realized. He had to work harder to present the illusion he wasn't, but he made just enough errors to let himself slip, from time to time.
And who played the pipes, Scotty of course. Nice touch.

I remember my teenage grief and anger when Spock died in this movie. I remained in my seat in the cinema long after the closing credits were done. And I was not alone.
I remember many people weeping openly when we were leaving the theatre.

I still get tears in my eyes when I watch this scene. Not ashamed, either. This was a powerful scene, possibly the most emotional scene in the whole of Star Trek.
Probably the saddest moment in Star Trek history.
I'm not ashamed to say I lose composure here...out of all Trek, it is this, and the Inner Light from TNG that I lose control of my emotions...even to this day.
Real men cry, nothing to be ashamed of. Too bad society has stifled men's emotions.

God that orchestra entrance goes straight to the soul. This is one of the best written, executed,acted scenes in movie history. Top to bottom. It’s perfect.

Today I lost my hero.
Today the world lost a good actor.
Today humanity lost a person who brought life to a character that in just f few episodes of a TV series provided more singular inspiration to more nerds world-wide; lighting the fire for more exploration more discovery and more invention than perhaps can be credited to any other single individual in history.
Today mankind lost a friend and advocate.but the void left in his absence is most certainly unexpected.
Mr. Nimoy has my life long gratitude for portraying a character that taught me the value of thinking and doing so in a manner that made it not only digestible but entertaining. And off-screen he lived his life with an integrity and dignity that that is so very rare in his industry, and in the world.
In a word, he made life...."Fascinating"

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, happened to stumble on to it today. This isn't my Star Trek, I'm all about TNG, but this scene nearly moved me to tears. Shatner's performance here is Oscar worthy, the way he breaks and then steels himself to get out that final word.
Every time I watch this clip, I can't help to cry or shed a tear because I feel like they are originally paying tribute to Leonard Nimoy which sadly passed away last year. :( He lived long and prosper.

I saw this movie in the theater back in 1982. As a dedicated Trekker, I hoped desperately it would be at least ok. I was wrong. From the first notes of Alexander Courage's Star Trek fanfare, to the final end titles with James Horner's thrilling music. I knew that Harve Bennet had not only made a hit. But had knocked the ball out of the park with this one. Still the BEST of all the Star Trek movies. This is the one that literally SAVED Star Trek from oblivion. Especially after the disaster of the first movie. If "Wrath of Khan" had failed, that would have been it.
I was eleven when I watched this in 82 and I cried my eyes out. Rip Leonard, god bless you.
I still remember how me, my sister's and my late father came out of the cinema rather numb, stunned and almost drained from everything this film delivered.........and in my opinion, still the best.
Saavik shed a tear, Rare sign of Vulcan Emotion.
She was 1/2 Romulan and 1/2 Vulcan.

I quoted Kirk's last words during my uncle's memorial recently. Star Trek was the biggest thing in our lives. While family dressed up in normal attire, I wore my classic science uniform he gave me that he received while Trek was still on the air in the 60s. Trek showed me how to deal with death and life. Though my best friend is gone, my adventure to the undiscovered country continues :) =/\=
I said this when Robin Williams died and it applies to this loss as well...the universe is...a bit dimmer without him in it. Peace and Eternal Life, Mr. Nimoy. And in the succinct words of Data, "Goodbye."

20 years after I first saw this, I still tear up everytime I watch this. I think this is one of the most powerful scenes in Star Trek. Shatner gave an Oscar winning performance in this scene. Just this scene alone should have given him an Oscar.

I have seen this movie, I don't know how many times (including in theatre) and, while watching it this morning, I noticed for the FIRST time that Saavik actually sheds a tear!!!
She and Spock were quite close being the only two Vulcans on the Enterprise. Vulcans have emotions too; they just hide them behind their logic most of the time.

If only William Shatner had attended Nimoy's funeral and had delivered this speech as an homage to Spock. it would've been amazing. 'Course the guy didn't even go to Gene Roddenberry's damn ceremony, so I guess that's that.
William wanted to go as both William and Leonard see each other as brothers. But William was on the other side of the US and couldn't make it in time. (Leonard's Jewish and Jewish faith requires the remains to be buried as quickly as possible) So William got his daughters to go instead.

A lot of religious laws stem from practical concerns that people of the time couldn't be trusted to follow without the fear of God put in them. Protect cows cause they produce milk, don't mix fabrics because scam artists do that and tell you it's full wool, etc. Maybe it's to avoid the bodies being attacked by carrion eaters, or rotting in the sun and spreading disease.

I love that when Kirk says 'of all the souls he has encountered in his travels, his was the most human' he was paying Spock the most sincerest of compliments despite how Spock may have took it. But it expresses the embodiment of the 23rd century human need for self betterment and in it, Roddenberry's vision, in all its beauty is conveyed.
