Seeing Jack waive off the celebration to allow Aoki an undisturbed line, & opportunity to putt is what makes Nicklaus so special. Grace, & Composure no matter how things play out. What a guy.
That opening anthem with Jim McKay giving a dramatic narrative followed by Love’s Theme by Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra was the introduction of the best day of golf during my teens, 18-hole coverage of the final round of the U.S. Open every year on Father’s Day.
One of the great things about the U.S. Open is that the final round round falls each year on Father’s Day, so the dad’s get a hall pass to watch as much of the final round as they want. For this one I was at my in-laws and my father in law was an avid golfer (although he was an Arnie guy and did not like Nicklaus). It was a big deal that Jack was in the hunt at age 40 and I barely moved out of my chair for the entire round. I just sat there for hours not saying a word, not wanting to jinx the moment. I barely noticed that the family cat was asleep on the table next to me the entire time. For at least 2 hours I barely breathed or made a sound. When Nicklaus raised his putter on 17 knowing his putt for birdie was going in I screamed “HE MADE IT!!” Well that poor cat started scrambling for his life, I swear leaving claw marks on the wooden table. We laughed about that for years and the story was retold many times, especially on Father’s Day.
This was the first tournament entirely contested after I was born. Nicklaus win at Augusta in 86 made me a golf fan for life. It’s great to see these old tournaments.
Your delusional as I love me some Jack but tiger out class him as charlie will a pro golfer! Tiger woods is one of the top dominant athletes of all time not Jack with respect! 😊❤
18 majors, 19 second place in majors. Most top 5 majors over 20 more wins over the next player, Bobby jones 13 majors( the ams in those days had the best players in the golfing world) retired at age 28 went months between majors without touching a club , received law degree and several other degrees during this time. But because jack continued jack is the goat, during Bobby's time nobody was close to his major total, he retired on top of the mountain.
Thesa were the glory days of championship golf on television. At that point ABC carried the Open, the PGA, and the British Open. I really enjoyed the intro's, when Jim McKay would set up the final round, then "Love's Theme" would burst on the screen, with McKay saying " ABC Sports ... presents a National Championship ". It set up a day of DRAMA !
Watched this while reading The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey. Became a Christian that day. Played nine holes in the evening and the colors on the golf course were absolutely beautiful. A very, very memorable day!
Nicklaus wins the US Open, Watson wins The Open, Nicklaus wins the PGA. Then in 1981 at the Masters Watson and Nicklaus are first and second heading into the final round and should be paired together. But organisers choose to send out the final two pairs First (Watson) & Third (Norman) and Second (Nicklaus) & Fourth (Mahaffey). Jack was FURIOUS.
I've always wondered what was more exciting for Keith. Bring tied with Jack in this tournament or winning his first tournament, The Memorial, which is Jack's tournament.
But only thirteenth on the money list in 1980, despite winning the two most lucrative prizes. Which indicates, as the OP suggested, that Jack in 1980 wasn’t quite the player he had been from 1963 - 1978.
Hate to break it to you, but Jack was never electric and quick: he always played slow and stolid, which drove a lot of people nuts, especially the way he would stand an eternity over putts. I really don't get the comment at all. Here he's setting the US Open record, crushing his drives, and he's not the same force?🤔🙄
to encourage better, more exciting play, how about a system of per-hole financial rewards and penalties in rounds 3&4 of all pro tournaments? Like +1K per bird, +2K per eagle, and -1K per bogie, -2K per double bogie etc. Think how cool it would be on #12 at the Masters to watch one thousand dollar ball after another disappearing into the murky depths of Reyes Creek!
These final round postings are great!
Glad you are enjoying them!

I remember watching this final round and my dad said if Jack wins he’d take the family for a steak dinner. Great result all around.
What were the steaks like?
Steak qaulity update pls

What a great memory, thank you for sharing. My father and I do our best to watch the the final round every year.

Tiger brought golf to tremendous heights. Jack simply the best ever. Great golfer, good family man, gentleman.

Well 44 years later and it is worse. A bloody red line and not much else! Ball not followed thru the air. Can't be bothered with it anymore.

Remember watching this and later his win at the PGA. When I was a kid my summers were all golf.
Jack, the greatest of all time .
Apart from you know who
Yes he is

@1:07 Ahhh. Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Good times.
Yes and after watching this you could go and watch Empire Strikes Back at the nearest Cinema, good times indeed.
Jack giving the opportunity to Aoki to putt out on 18 first was a class act not taken. Truly inexplicable.
Zero to do with his place regardless 2 nd
Brings back great memories
thank you

I spoke with Mr. Siebert yesterday…I never had a clue that he was Aoki’s caddie in this tournament.

Jack was the greatest so gracious in defeat has well.
No hats with logos, no caddies helping read putts, winning gracefully.
Hey, it’d be great if you could show us every single shot from Tommy Fleetwood’s 63 at Shinnecock!
Fergus not only resembled Nicklaus, but appeared to have some of the same mannerisms.

And the first tournament that Keith won was the Memorial, Jack's tournament.
Jack was great in 1980 winning twice both were majors but you could see he wasn’t as electric and quick but still a great player
I watched the 1975 Masters the other day. So many great names.
1980 jack number one in greens in regulation
1980 jack's total driving(length/accuracy) the best in recorded us pga tour history
But only thirteenth on the money list in 1980, despite winning the two most lucrative prizes. Which indicates, as the OP suggested, that Jack in 1980 wasn’t quite the player he had been from 1963 - 1978.

Jim McKay’s hairpiece is a classic.
I we ever saw what All celebrities look/looked like without the cosmetics, we'd laugh for weeks.
First prize money was $55k with inflation in today’s dollars that’s about $212k. This years winner earned $3.5 million.
Thank you Tiger & Saudi Prince’s
The No Hat Era
Lots of visors back then I wore a lot of them.
You don't see caddies helping with putts.
Jack is the GOAT undisputed... NOT Tiger... 18>15!
It is only the US Open The British Open was more important to non Americans
