I've been fascinated with a "1-panel" shape that creates a sphere when, as a kid, I successfully peeled a tangerine, keeping the peel in one piece. However, my "1-panel" shape is a bit different in that it had two "roundish shapes" at the poles. Love your content. Awesome stuff!
Here to say this… I was hoping I wasn’t the first one. Yeah, I wonder why he bypassed the Orange Spiral. Turned out with a neat shape, but seems the difficult way to go about it.
Not really, since the final 2D surface still needed to be stretched into a sphere by inflation. It's literally impossible to turn a sphere into a truly representative 2D surface (at least given the physical laws of our universe), because there will always be a third dimension of curvature on any section of a sphere no matter how small, and that simply can't exist in 2 dimensions. Truly "flat" sections of a sphere must be infinitesimally small, meaning there is an infinite number of them; and since this is a single piece, then you'd end up with an infinitely long, infinitesimally wide map - not terribly practical 😂 In other words, even using this pattern to map the Earth onto a 2D surface would still produce loads of scale compression in some areas. It's just the nature of geometry.
@Foefii Basically, this way of constructing a sphere only works because the material can stretch. If it were entirely static and non stretching, you could not induce the curvature along multiple axis needed for it to become a sphere.
I have pretty much zero interest in football or any ball sports or their balls but I can't seem to stop watching your content. I love how passionate, experimental and methodical you are.

0:27 The first try you did when you attached the panels together and were opening and closing the ball in your hands, my immediate first thought was how much that looks like a large version of when my dog rips up his tennis ball.😂
I have a great ball idea!!!!!!! Make one out of the bottom of the cleats!!!! It will be difficult since it's hard plastic but it would be amazing with many ways to show it off!!! I would use a shoe that has a cool colored bottom like any soccer shoes that come in those cool glossy neon green, hot pink, gloss red, it good black plastic resin. I suggest you use the screwable kind of cleats too, giving you those options I spoken about, you have the option to remove them and use the ball without hurting your feet and obviously so it doesn't stop the ball from rolling while the cleats are on, but also to have the option to screw them back in when it's time to display your ball and show it off. You can also display it with different color cleats I mean you can even use any color or mix of colors you buy online so long as the clients buy the right size to fit in the thread size. There are literally tons of different colors sizes materials of screwable cleat tips to choose from the sky's the limit. It would look so cool kicking it around with a bunch of the metal screw-in holes or threading showing when you don't have the cleats screwed in, people will ask about them. I think it would look best with ONE screw in cleat centered on EACH hexagon or whatever shape, size or pattern the pieces that you stitch in, I can send you a drawing of it too bro. You should totally do it, it would possibly be the most customisable and likely popular ball thus far.
Waterjet cutters can certainly be quite accurate, around the same as a laser cutter. The problem with this cut was that they use quite a bit of force and so when cutting soft materials they can push the material around a bit during cutting, losing accuracy. For rigid materials this isnt an issue

Just peel an orange in one piece and you got your shape right there pal
Here to say this… I was hoping I wasn’t the first one. Yeah, I wonder why he bypassed the Orange Spiral. Turned out with a neat shape, but seems the difficult way to go about it.
@@JoelKreider if you wanna be technical and gay about what he’s saying then it’s one whole orange peel one way and one whole one the other way
the one piece
THE ONE PIECE IS REALL
imagine using that panel as a map projection of earth

Not the first one panel ball, but still very cool.
So sick! Next up the seem-less ball.
So this is where Gyro gets his balls pre made…
Anyone who knows how to properly peel a mandarin is well aware of this shape.
I always try to peel my oranges in one go.
WAIT! YOU LITERALLY MADE SPHERE INTO A 2 DIMENSIONAL SHAPE!
You could probably try to create the first correct world map!!!
Truly "flat" sections of a sphere must be infinitesimally small, meaning there is an infinite number of them; and since this is a single piece, then you'd end up with an infinitely long, infinitesimally wide map - not terribly practical 😂
In other words, even using this pattern to map the Earth onto a 2D surface would still produce loads of scale compression in some areas. It's just the nature of geometry.
you want to think about that again bro
@@pizzlerot2730what?😅
@Foefii Basically, this way of constructing a sphere only works because the material can stretch.
If it were entirely static and non stretching, you could not induce the curvature along multiple axis needed for it to become a sphere.
Omg! Sooooo trueeeee!
Bro just made big tennis balls
I have pretty much zero interest in football or any ball sports or their balls but I can't seem to stop watching your content. I love how passionate, experimental and methodical you are.
You mean soccer?
@@Lenexa1yes, but we’d rather not call it that
@@SPAGGETman246 Why not?
@@Lenexa1
Because why would we use Oxford slang?
@@ragnkja you mean you don't want to use the correct name for the sport?
I cant believe you really made this game comfy xD
Thank you for making it wholesome and entertaining to watch rather than the usual horror tension and jumpscare anxiety! I'm loving your content and as a new fan I will definitely watch eveyrthing that I've missed 💛💛💛
I like how the flat version looks exactly like its path.
🎉 congratulations 🎉 for being the first one to make that ball brother 🫠💯
If you had peeled an orange in one peel you would have already understood this concept! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤠🤠
you do what i do when i crochet a new patern, i'll do what i want first then simplify and fix anything as i go!
then make hundreds!
Did you know, the internal organ HEART is also one-panel? You could use this knowledge on the naming.
We used to practice peeling oranges that way. Peel the entire skin in one piece. I don't recall the peel matching your shape, but when you've got no other entertainment...
You don't have to follow any specific pattern to do that. I do it just to keep the peel in 1 piece so it's easy to clean up.
And then if you're careful you can put the peel back together again into a hollow orange.
Wow! Your creations are very impressive! Mixing imagination, with knowledge, really good job! 💯
Watching now for first time. Thank you and you have a wonderful voice 😌
forgot about youtube and left this short on repeat for a bit. your voice is so pretty and almost lulled me to sleep, its so comforting and easy on the ears
It's an honor andnprivalage too see such brilliant geometry out here..
IF i ever had such a brilliant teacher showcasing such brilliant applications of these technical subjects..
I wud have probably been more attracted to engineering
This is awesome I was just thinking about this sort of thing from one of your other videos. I’m behind the curve. Awesome work!
0:27 The first try you did when you attached the panels together and were opening and closing the ball in your hands, my immediate first thought was how much that looks like a large version of when my dog rips up his tennis ball.😂
Feels like this could be components for the perpetual motion machine.
That was satisfying to watch. Also you have a wonderful voice my friend.
Everyone keeps talking about this and that but no ones talking about the metal ball rolling infinitely
Those look sick
Am I the only one who thought he was trying to make a £1 ball? (1 Pound)
So instead of just taking the “first 1 panel ball,” you took the second, third, and fourth one panel balls
His voice is so relaxing, i don't know why.
Be happy lad. Life does that sometimes, but you got 2 daughters who love you and a community behind you. All the best 👌🏻
Looks practical enough. Cool!
With a texture like that appears to have, I don’t care if it’s practical. It looks like it’d be pleasing to stim with
This is actually a beautiful practical application in topology. You should sell these to mathematicians in colleges.
Looking good! Congrats 🙌
I think I've seen something like this but wow what an amazing walk through of your process 👏
I never knew about the craft of making balls or even how it was done. Now, I’m fully immersed in every video of yours I see.
That commitment to 1 panel, no shortcuts wow. I think you are a true artist.
that net looks like an intigral lol
i think it’s for the best that the water cutter didn’t work out ! now you have a template so you can make as many as you like. beautiful ball !!
Made one of these balls in Jr. High art class. Learned a couple of different ways to make a ball and a hacky sack.
Yall should fs run this back, this was fun to watch.
