Good to remember Stanley Mann. He arranged the purchase of the ex-Jack Buchanan 1925 Bentley Big Six with a Vanden Plas 4 seat open tourer body but on the 12 foot limousine chassis from the USA. I asked Michael, Stanley's engineer, if he could replace the horrible Smiths 5 jet carburettor with a pair of the correct S.U. carburettors that the Speed Six used. Michael asked me to wait a few minutes and then appeared with an unopened wooden crate, with an original Bentley twin carburettor conversion kit, with all the linkages and fixings. It turned out there was more to do on the car, as it had originally been built with a camshaft driven dynamo. Before Jack Buchanan left for the USA to join a Broadway cast, he had it converted to a crankshaft nose driven dynamo, as the battery was always going flat. However Bentley had omitted to replace the camshaft dynamo with a camshaft torsion damper, so it never ran properly. It went into a museum in California in the early 1930's and stayed there until Stanley arranged its purchase in 1981. It was only when Michael tried to fit a camshaft damper and had to machine the bulkhead to fit it, that we realised it had never had one. It had only done 19,000 miles from new and once the damper was fitted, it was the sweetest running Bentley Six I have ever driven. When I came to collect it, I asked Michael for the Bentley crate that the carburettor kit was it, as a real piece of history. "Oh we burnt that in the stove" was his reply.

Wow. Ivan you never stop amazing me. I ride classic motorcycle trials there in Australia and often watch the car trials over there on you tube. I grew up with old cars around me as mum and dad restored and rallied all the time. It’s great to see you using the cars as they use to drive on tracks like this back in the day. Thanks for another great video. Cheers

Love listening to your reminiscences Ivan, just about anything, you've had, (and are still having), a very interesting life. Also like the way you get a bit from "this" and a bit from "that" and "make a good'un out of the two". It so reminds me of my old Dad and a time when we "fixed" things and not just threw them away.

Bravo! Next year I'll be getting a 1934 Riley 9 Special muddy, I hope...but have to say that Lakeland Trial looked suitably tricky: what's the best one to start with, I wonder? Really looking forwards to that hour on the Red Car, please Ivan. Happy Christmas to you and all at The Shed
