Assuming he’s ear trained he’ll be fine. Beethoven was (I believe), he knew what the melodic and harmonic intervals are supposed to sound like.
When you can barely hear the bass, but you still make some of the sickest bass lines in music history.

No! It's really, really not! I can't really explain it well, but Andrew, all the stuff you do on this channel, you always do with some sort of genuine passion and love, that radiates from all of your work.
And I don't really think that having people work for you and having a studio, where your creativity is unbound changes this passion, because in the end it's you who directs the process, it's you who picks directions, it's you who hires people, and I'm sure it's you who inspires and fills them with energy, the same way you inspire us, your audience.

Andrew, I feel for you man! Similar thing, though different frequency area loss, happened to me in early 2000s. I was in a car, no music on, nothing, regular road noise and convo and suddenly I felt my left ear closing, similarly to a high cut filter would do. No biggie for a second, as I'd had, and I think everyone does have sudden pops and similar stuff here and there for a second or a minute, due to pressure change, due to hydration levels and so on. My "filter" never opened back up, though. My left ear is "normal" up to 1k, then at 4k -30dB, 8k -60dB. First weeks all the sounds were distorted really bad, there was flanging or phasing, loud hiss etc and I was dizzy and disoriented. I heard everything from the right, like, even if I saw someone's mouth move in front of me knowing the sound comes from there, I heard them of the right, which was freaky. Slowly my brain adapted and I started hearing centered again. My ears are about 50 cents different pitch separately listened, but together not clashing, which is super strange, but the brain (luckily) connects them correctly I guess. My left one is 3-6dB louder than the good right ear, which I'm guessing is due to having such a narrow working band that the brain has boosted it? Works well for phone convos in loud places! :D Also, keeping with the good ear on the pillow gives me blissful sleep in noisy hotel rooms... ;) I have a constant hiss, like really high low cut white noise in the left ear, but it doesn't bother me, I don't hear it unless I think about it, and sometimes when I'm sick or really physically and mentally tired. I can make music, DJ and mix relatively normally, though the left side highs I do confirm with meters and by turning my right ear that direction occasionally. I saw two top doctors, one in Finland and one in Miami and nothing could be done about it. Both gave the same diagnosis; either a blood clot or viral infection messed up my inner ear. I'm happy I have to hearing ears, I do hear stereo, though limitedly so, and I can continue in my profession. I had already before been very strict about wearing plugs and after I got over the worst and could work again, I've been even more so. I preach about protection, as I'd give anything to get my left ear fully back, yet some people "can't be bothered", "can't afford", "can't enjoy music" and don't plug their ears going out clubbing or at concerts. :/
Protip: sandstorms can indeed give you worse hearing (if you are unlucky).

I've always worn earplugs at live gigs. I knew so many older guys during the led zeppelin and who era who'd lost their hearing. They warned me about the metal music scene and I'm glad I listened. 30+ years later my hearing is excellent. WEAR EAR PROTECTION GUYS.

as someone who suffers from tinnitus, i know how scary hearing loss/damage can be :( take care of your ears y'all! if you're a frequent concert goer wear hearing protection!

Thank you so much for sharing this ! My hearing got worse these last fast five years from touring and loud music, and my tinnitus got to the point where I can't stand loud environments anymore, despite always having ear-plugs on while playing or going to a show. This issue is a strong taboo in the music industry, not a lot of people are talking about it.
The worst part is not even related to music but to relationships, hearing loss tends to isolate you from the others. People get quickly frustrated when you make them repeat things twice, thrice, etc, and eventually that leads to depression.
If you're a musician, I beg you, protect your ears in loud environments, take rests (short ones, even long ones), don't take unnecessary risks. Hearing loss and damage is irreversible, it can only go for the worse when it starts and if you don't take care of yourself.
It's been six years since I haven't heard silence, and trust me, I miss it everyday, you can't imagine how precious it is until you lose it.
Take care of your ears, nobody else can do it for you !

I’m 70% deaf in my left ear and 80% deaf in my right ear
I was born severely hearing impaired and I wear hearing aids in both ears.
Despite my troubles I have always been musical. I started my TH-cam channel over 10 years ago and I’ve been releasing music ever since.
I rarely speak on this topic because i try not to worry too much about it.
However I would be lying if I didn’t get frustrated every time I make a song because I don’t have anyone to give me feedback or help me mix and that usually leads to a lot of “hiss” in my tracks that go unnoticed to me, I also deal with not ever achieving a “full” sound.
I understand what you are going though and I just want to let you know that you are never alone.

I'm serous i woul've killed myself if i was you. I am an audiophile suffering from tinnitus and other hearing problems in my life although not as servere as yours. I almost killed myself at least 5 times already in my life. I conisidered high speed car crashes at 180 kmp/h but did not have the balls to do it. I got drunk and drove towards a bridge go killl myself by jumping from height but didn't have the guts to do it. S0 I'm stuck living my life. But i swear the moment i get a hold of a firearm i won't guarantee for anything. My worst nightmare has come true so i either start accepting what is left and dealing with everything or i one day get so drunk i won't mind smashing my remapped 1.9 tdi into a tree at almost 200 kp/h.

I don't usually even comment on videos but you're one of my all time favourite artists and I totally respect what you do as it's helped many people, myself included, carry on creating; I feel like saying from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
You didn't say it in such words but you shouldn't feel any guilt or any obligation regarding hiring someone or not being capable of mixing your own music any more because you've developed and changed as a person. I had a wicked double ear infection that result in pitch perception differences between my ears for around a year and I had to have my brother's help me out.
Your perspective on this is genuinely uplifting and shows me that other musicians that I look up to have had similar struggles.

If its any consolation at all, I'm partially deaf in my left ear. One of your videos regarding an app that rebalances audio for people with hearing impairments actually helped me a lot. But more to the point, I discovered you at a time when I was barely starting to make music again, and any time I start to doubt myself or feel burnt out you come out with something new that would inspire me to continue pushing myself in learning. Even as far back as a couple of years ago, I listen to Old tracks I have on my SoundCloud page and compare them against the new ones with great pride in my growth. As corny as it may sound, I couldn't have done it without you dude. Keep doing what you do. And thank you.

Hey Andrew! Have a look at that guy called Accurate beats. He went through a surgery and lost hearing on one ear completely. His attitude dealing with it may help you with the whole situation. And even if it doesn't, then you still checked out a guy who genuinely loves music and is great at it.
Hi Andrew, I'm sorry to hear of your hearing loss. I also suffer from hearing loss and tinnitus, which is part of the reason I decided to quit playing live shows with bands. It was also a concern when I was trying to make up my mind whether or not to enrol on your monthly Music Production class in October, as I really didn't think my ears would be up to the job when it came to the mixing and mastering aspects of the class. In the end I did sign up and I am so glad I did so as I learnt so much. Since the class finished, I've completed a couple of pieces for a record label here in the UK which will see release on an LP (on vinyl no less) next year and about which I am really excited. It's still relatively small fry but for me is a huge achievement, and I don't think I could have done it without you, so thank you!

I hope one day hearing loss can be reversible and the underlying neural mechanism behind it can be understood more in-depth and lots of incredible musicians such as you can regain their abilities in no time. As far as I know some pioneer researchers such as neuroscientist A. James Hudspeth and his group have made such progress in understanding all this so my wish is to see you regaining your health very soon. Andrew I admire you. You have inspired me creatively. I suffer from degenerate hearing loss . It runs in my family. I can hear speach, but there are certain pitches that I can not hear. That makes it difficult to understand what someone is trying to say sometimes. It started when I was thirteen and just came out of nowhere. music is my way of escape and to vent. I first learned how to play by ear. And now like you I need help with my music. This is my biggest fear is to not be able to hear music anymore, not be able to create. But if you can accomplish what you have accomplished. Dealing with this situation this whole time. That gives me hope. So thank you so much for tireless work. Oh and I really love first of October. Looking forward to next year's album.
I've had tinnitus as long as I could remember (sometimes people are just born with it, apparently) and realizing that not everyone constantly hears an eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sound was huge news to me and really lead to me taking care of my ears better. No more than 85dB for listening or mixing, headphones turned down, no more q-tips, always wear earplugs when playing with a drummer or live in general. Thanks for making a video that might bring more awareness to something as important yet so often not discussed as ear health is.

This is literally me! I vividly remember this time when I was about 3-4 and I just realised that I had a constant ring in my ears. I had so much trouble getting to sleep after that, because I would always worry about my ears being broken or something
@@TheApostleofRock Very subtle "noise" in a quiet environment can be normal...for example, you can hear the bloodflow in your eardrums if things are very quiet around you. If it's causing problems get it checked out but it's not necessarily a disease.
Have you had an MRI? I have hearing loss from working around aircraft in the military, and tinnitus. I was in a car wreck, and sustained a brain injury, which amplified my tinnitus. It might be worth ruling out something in your brain causing your hearing problems. Best of luck to you, my friend. Your creativity and ear for music is unique, and I'd hate for you to lose your hearing.

@@kevinsoney9739 No, it doesn't help with anything in particular, except maybe triggering anxiety if you're claustrophobic. But it could be a symptom stemming from something going on with the brain. The brain is mostly mystery still, unfortunately. You break your arm, they put it in the right position and put a cast on it, and it heals, like it never happened, usually. If you hurt your brain, be it physically, chemically, some disease, stroke, whatever, the symptoms can be weird and unpredictable like Andrew described, because we don't know what each part does, exactly. We know this such and such part is related to these types of functions, but nothing more specific, like this exact group of cells controls how Andrew hears bass. Luckily, a specialist will know just what to do, and he's not left to the comments section for his healthcare! Haha! :)

I have had an eustachian tube placed in my ear drum to help with my ear but it did not help. Very expensive procedure.
Andrew, look up Dr. Thayer with So Cal Chiropractic on TH-cam. Search his channel for "hearing". Something to think about.
MRI helped doctors understand the exact cause of my hearing loss and informed me, despite how in the past I've been told otherwise, that I can get hearing aids.
I’m surprised I didn’t lose my hearing permanently after my crazy but short lived raving/clubbing life 20 years ago . I sat on those big speakers when they were playing very loudly - Couldn’t hear for days afterwards but then it came back. I think my tinnitus is from that, which didn’t notice it appearing until 10 years ago. I can hear things my mum can’t. Still Very sensitive hearing. Can’t go to Concerts anymore, even with ear plugs. Please look after your ears everyone, don’t be silly like me.
as a musician and bass player the only idea of loosing the 200hz and below make me feel like fainting, I literally tried not to get emotional and cry, and your relaxed and calm way gave me the strength to finish the video!

My hearing fluctuates too as did my tinnitus and for years I thought it was a problem with my ears but it was actually a jaw disorder called TMJ that was causing my issues and I'm getting better. Really hope you find some answers, I know it sucks and it's scary. Wishing you the best!
@ANNSQ It really is down to the specialist unfortunately. Spend some time doing your research and find a dental surgeon who specializes in the TMJ joint. Mouth guards can make it worse but they can create a splint which you wear at night that relaxes the jaw muscles. Orthodontic treatment may be needed too if your bite is misaligned due to a malocclusion. Anti-inflammatory drugs can work as can physiotherapy / chiropractic adjustment. It's usually a mix of all the above but for now try to reduce any anxiety and stress, meditate, stretch to improve posture and tightness and it may make a difference. Hope that helps.
It's comforting to see other people suffer from this and found a way to make it better. I thought it was something uncommon. Besides the snapping and crackling, tension and occasional pain I also have some tmj related tinnitus. My tinnitus fluctuates in frequency and between being non existent and being quite loud (when in a silent room). It's loud especially when I wake up in the morning. Fortunately I've done an audiogram and 2 other test at the doctor and my hearing is perfectly fine in the normal hearing range . However I've lost already most of the hearing in the very high frequencies - above 16khz which I guess might be a pretty standard loss for a 30 yo.
I'll be having an appointment with a tmj specialist next week, I hope I'll be able to improve the condition.

Hold up ive been thinking for years if my tinnitus is because of my jaw since sometimes when i relaxed it or messaged it. It would ease up and not be insanely loud but i didnt think it was actually possible for that to be the cause of it
As someone obsessed with music, hearing loss is one of my biggest anxieties. The thought of going deaf before I die has paralyzed me with anxiety before because I truly don't know what I would do if I couldn't hear music anymore. Even though I do my best to keep my hearing protected, I have no idea what could happen in the future. Keep making music, Andrew, no matter what.
It's easy to let those thoughts dominate, and it is very important that you not let them. They will ruin your everyday enjoyment of life more than any loss of hearing ever could. No matter what happens, in all likelihood you'll enjoy music just as much, just relax and let it work its magic.

Your music has been helping me keep my pants on for over a decade. Hearing loss is terrifying even if music isn't the focus of one's life, and I'm impressed by your fortitude. There's no shame in needing help, and it's great you recognize your good fortune in being able to afford that help. I continue to look forward to the next jam from you (and your team!), and even if you never produced another song, you've already added far more than your share of joy to the universe. (but plz don't stop making songs I need them). You're amazing and we love you!
Ah thanks for sharing this, I didn't actually know about your hearing loss and sorry you're dealing with that. That's something I think we all fear of as producers. I really hope you come to peace with it, it's so easy to feel hopeless with health decline man, but you seem to have a good stable ground under you for mental health right now. Proud of you.

Hearing loss is probably the one thing i'm most afraid of, next to going blind.
Going blind is pretty fucking scary, but thankfully if you do take care of your health and stay active it is very very rare. I've never seen a proffesional athelte with major hearing or sight loss.
Clover you can be born with genetics that are predisposed to blindness or deafness though

I think the majority of music creators would love to work with skilled mixing and mastering engineers, but the cost involved hiring other professionals requires that you're in good financial shape. I totally understand the frustration with hearing loss. I had a cyst removed in my right ear when I was 8 and have another now in my left. I am tone deaf to different ranges because of this. Being a musician and producing multiple large concerts doesn't help either lol. Keep your head up brother! It does get better!

I was jamming with friends and playing bass
At the end I was like "that was weird I couldn't hear it"
They said WE COULD.
That's when I knew my ears were fudged.
Also because I couldn't hear it I was playing random notes completely out of key
To be fair, bass notes can be hard to identify, especially in a noisy jam scenario.

Me being a percussionist, I really have to pay mind to my aural health. I dread the day where my hearing goes away completely, so I'm doing everything I can to slow it down. EAR PROTECTION IS YOUR FRIEND GUYS!

Bro I'm a Audio Producer/Rapper and I've had issues with my hearing for almost the same time frame.
I'm 36 now, but I lost a good amount of treble sounds in my left ear around my Senior year of Highschool.
I actually know the reason though in my case. My friend at the time took a small water balloon and filled
many of them up with air. We used to think it was hilarious to scare one another by walking up behind and
then popping the balloon with our hands right behind the person. These little balloons popped REALLY loud.
Needless to say one time my friend held the damn balloon legit UP against my ear and popped it and ever
since I can't hear hardly anything treble wise in my left ear. It sucks so bad too! Especially as someone who
does music and works on mixing vocals/music etc. I 100% feel your pain Andrew 😥
Look on the bright side though, at least you have super nice teeth. I have fucking DENTURES for fucks sakes!

andrew! thank you for sharing this so openly! i know sight and hearing aren't the same, but i lost a lot of my vision a few years ago and i really resonated with what you said about asking for help, and i just wanna say that it does get easier. it took me a looooong time to accept the fact that i am blind and i do need help with certain things, but the more you do it the more comfortable you'll be. it gets to be second nature and the new standard for how you go about what you do, and it sounds like you're well on the way to that, but i just want you to know it does get easier! having people around you that are willing to help is a big plus too, so it seems like you're in good hands. thank you so much for doing what you do!

Great video Andrew! I've too noticed a significant change in my hearing but tests just doesn't show what I'm experiencing. All the tests come out normal and no one can explain it. Just starting watching dude but we're on the same page and I'm so sorry bro, I dont even do shows ofte or listen to my music crazy loud but my right ear is practically half death, I havent been tested but its like listening to headphones with one broken earpod, ive bought so many earpods before over time I knew it was my hearing. and its the bass frequencies here too

Mellow Vocals have you had a doctor look at your eardrum? You could have a perforation. I have the same symptoms as you (half deaf, no bass) and in the same ear and mine is due to a large perforation. If you find that that is the case, you can get a tympanoplasty (surgery to patch up the hole) and that can really help to restore your hearing :) I’ve been considering the surgery but I’ve had sinus problems to sort out before I tackle my ears!! I’m an ENT doctor’s perfect patient lol

I had the same, but it was clogged with ear wax. they flush it out with water and then it's fine again.

derkman127 that’s defo something to look into. My dad had that, they sucked all the earwax out of his ears and he could hear again. I don’t think wax clogging would affect low frequency hearing, though. Either way, a doctor looking inside the ear will be able to tell what’s caused it!

I only started watching your stuff over Thanksgiving, but I’ve been really enjoying it. I’ve had tinnitus for years from being young and stupid, but I’ve been lucky that it hasn’t impacted my actual hearing much.
I have a cousin who has been basically stone deaf since birth. In the late 90s his favorite band was Korn. Why? Bc he could crank it up and feel the music more easily than a lot of other bands.
Being able to have a byline like Prince (Composed, arranged, performed and recorded by) is badass and shows the depth of your talents, but no one is going to think less of you for having parts done by other people. Just think of it as being in a band and they are your other members.
The current studio is definitely something very impressive and yeah there might be some who decide it’s too far from what they have. I’ve never had anything to actually record with and at tax time a couple new synths and an interface are on my list.

You seem really down to Earth, and you just seem like you have the need to share your joy with others. So upping your production seems like it's for everyone's benefit. I too love sharing my joy for music. We've all been there when we're lying in bed at 2am, not able to sleep because we're rocking out listening to a track we found or made, and we just want the sun to rise so that others can hear it and rock out with us. I see that in you and it's pretty cool.
I have hearing loss in my right ear due to a large perforation that’s too big to heal... I have a lower db level, low frequency loss and pretty bad tinnitus as a result. It sucks not to be able to hear bass in my right ear and to have generally one-sided hearing... so I can’t imagine how much it sucks for you, Andrew. What’s tinnitus like?
@@northside5398 Hmmm. It varies form person to person, and it's a VERY complex issue that can involve a number of parts of the brain. Mine is like this: Have you been to a club venue, concert, or loud bar where you're kind of YELLING so people can here yuo - for an extended period of time... Or right by the speakers? Then you go to a quieter place and NOW a VERY thin, VERY high frequency test-tone pervades - and there's no way to shake it...Perhaps you get some rest, and wake up and forgot about it? GOOD. That's what happens if one DOESNT' have it. Now... Imagine... it's a day or four later, and you're STILL hearing it... and it doesn't stop(!). Perhaps days, months, years... or NEVER. Well - that's tinnitus. For a musician, especially ... IT SUCKS!!!!! However, it can also be brought on by other factors aside from audio: strong emotions, anxiety, lack of rest, certain drugs and chemicals, one's head being knocked too hard, etc.
Julian Bustos basically what antfactor said. It depends massively on one’s specific condition. For most it’ll probably be a high pitched tone (that’s what I have mildly in both ears from loud music exposure. But I also have white noise and a low frequency tone in my right ear which is caused by my perforation. It’s just quiet enough that I don’t notice it while out and about and doing things, but when it’s quiet I can hear it 24/7. In terms of how it affects quality of life, again that’s down to the severity of the tinnitus and the individual. I would say mine only moderately affects my quality of life. I’m lucky in that respect. It gets worse when I’m anxious or stressed or focussing on it, but most of the time I can just deal with it. For some, however, it can be so loud that it overpowers everything else and there is no relief from it. That’s when people start having severe anxiety and depression from tinnitus. Unfortunately, people have been known to take their own lives due to severe tinnitus. So the moral of the story is protect your ears!
Ludwid Van Beethoven lost his hearing entirely during his 40’s and it didn’t stop him becoming a legend.
