  • IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt was paralysed in an accident in 2000 and has been a quadraplegic ever since. Now a multiple IndyCar racing-winning team-owner Schmidt has worked with Arrow to develop a car that allows him to compete again.
    The car is steered using Sam's head movements and he accellerates and brakes by blowing into and sucking air from a tube. He brought this specially converted C8 Chevrolet Corvette to the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2021 and we found out exactly how it works.

    That's a very cool adaptation to allow someone to drive a sportscar (or other applications that may emerge). I do have to somewhat take issue with the description 'mind control' though - that's not really what this is, is it?!
    The car is still being controlled by physical inputs.

      I agree with you on this. It does make it sound like it's in some way wired into his neural system and it's not neural electrical signals that steer the car. The eye/head movement and breath control is what it's there.
      But besides that, yeah, great technology and amazing potential. It also allowed me to see this car as of kinda "extension" of his own body, a wheeled exoskeleton. AND I'm in love with the Arrow logo. It just looks like a graphical waveform, beautiful.

    • @FAT8893
      @FAT8893 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, Sam can only use his head to control the car, so it is related to mind control.

      @@FAT8893 Only in the same way controlling a car with your arms and legs is mind control. (I am assuming you’re not claiming you don’t see the obvious difference between ‘mind’ and ‘head’).

    As a scientist and a human being this application made my heart ❤️ sigh and my brain wonder what other applications we could adapt it to further the mobility potential for other disabled persons!
    I want to be involved!

    if it's controlled by head then I really wonder about how they solved the safety problem rising out of head inertia

    • @frankjacoby9460
      @frankjacoby9460 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe the initial head inertia is compensated for by the camera/sensor sensitivity; than as you know the racing seat head supports minimize the head movement side to side and forward and backwards-car control is via rotation of the head following the eyes as the driver views the direction he wants to go, similar but simpler system to the eye aiming weapons technology used in our military aircraft. Just speaking as a lay person, I might be overreaching in my assessment.
