    This is such a powerful film. The act of cutting is not often brought up, but it is a very serious and very deadly issue that needs to be addressed. Each character portrayed their roles beautifully. I only wish that if someone sees this movie and is a cutter or knows someone who ... read moreis cutting that they will learn that this issue is no joke

    The mother is played by actress Sean Young and a lot of people find that's she's irritating. She's perfect for this role..."ice cold."
    This book/movie is by Steven Levenkron, Ph.D. (he treated Karen Carpenter). He also wrote The Best Little Girl in the World.

    @blue1bubbles I have been cut for 3 years. On arms, wrists, legs, stomach... My parents don't know it even though we are very close. It IS possible for parents -to be blind. And... you're right with this 'full time job'. It's really hard to hide scars and pretend you're ok but after some months... years, you become the best actor ever.

    2:26- 2:34. The refrence to Princess Diana is very relevant because she had admitted to self injuring. I wonder what Rebecca would say if she found out that the person she admires did the same thing that she ridicules Dawn for doing.

    I used to be a SI'er. Its very easy to continue to hurt yourself, even in situations that aren't that horrible! I thank Yahwea, though, for helping me to understand that hurting myself wasn't fixing my problems. Don't get me wrong, I can still feel the tearing of my skin and how euphoric it was in my time of "need." That, unfortunately, never goes away.

    @blue1bubbles Parents usually don't know because people that cut themselves have learned how to hide it easily. Sometimes the parents are usually too busy to notice and that's one of the factors that lead to cutting. Not all people wear long sleeves for it; there are obviously different parts of your body you can cut. Sure, it can seem like a ful time job keeping cutting a secret, but sometimes it's not that hard and it can become the center of your life at the time, so it doesn't seem that hard

    The therapist is played by actress Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and she's the ideal therapist. Having an office inside a mall is a great location. It's genius and also show's she cares. Where do teens "usually" love to go...the mall. Too bad therapists in the real word don't think of this. The book is called, “The luckiest girl in the world!” by Steven Levenkron.
    The opening scene showing her ice skating is symbolic with cutting/self-injury. The blades on her ice skates cuts into the ice.

    I use to cut myself two years ago from all the stress and felt unwanted. But it's true what a commenter said before it takes a lot of strength and self willingness to completely stop. To be honest the thought gets into my head when something makes me said or a little depressed but I push it out of my mind. And like another person said there are ointments to make the scars smooth and not visible . Most of the ones in my arm are all gone and some you really have to be staring at my arm to find t

  • @georgestap
    @georgestap 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    the fact of the matter is a decent amount of people know i do, the real problem for people who cut is not those who ridicule them for doing it but reconciling that they will be seen as different for doing it, yes they have issues, but that is the reason they cut, that should not lead to another reason for them to dip deeper into the depressive chasms of ones own inner thoughts.

    You wont understand unless you've done it...but it requires a person to be in a dark, sad, angry state of mind to want to do it. It may be a good thing that you don't want to understand. No one should have to feel like they need to hurt themselves. Even if you don't get it though, being there for her is the best thing you can do. Its common for people to relapse. Just don't get upset or angry with her. Sounds like you're a great friend.

It' best to forget and erase the scars than to have to hide them for the rest of your life (especially when you are on the swim team). Hang in there. :)

    i have a love hate relationship with this movie, i mean i see what they tried to do here but honestly, they stick to this stereotype that self harmers are people with no friends , not "popular" in school,weridos that everyone makes fun of , as well as totally makes them look insane .honestly i dont get.
    that pisses me off so much ! no surprise self harming is still a tabu since its being presented that way .

    ya, and it also depends how sensitive person is and self confidant...but not many teenagers are strong to avoid consults from other kids at this age. honestly, i hated highschool cause i was different from other girls, just because i didnt want to be clone. but i didnt have on my mind to hurt myself, but i waited and tried to become better than them, and show them "who's the boss now", now after 8 years, i did show them who i really am and how lame they where and stayed that way.

    When you get to 10th grade, people really aren't that bad. There's a trend you see in schools these days where once a grade hits a certain age, say when they go into the 10th or 9th grade, people drop out of the hierarchy system and everybody becomes friends because they're mature enough to see past all the bullshit. Movies depict an unrealistic picture of what High school is like for younger people.

  • @XxBlueEyedAngelxXl

    Im a teen myself and I think that the way they put this movie across was wrong.. because they made the girl look like a serious freak.. which make others think that people who self cut are freaks and that was wrong!! They should have made the movie in which kids and teens can relate to the character not make them feel that they are a freak like this girl because they self cut like her!!
    Does anyone else agree?

  • @narniafan1015
    @narniafan1015 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great story line, but it was filmed in the wrong time period. When this first came out in 2000 many people didn't understand cutting and exactly why people do it, so many of the scenes and the people in it are all wrong and messed up the movie completley. Cutting, burning, and other kinds of self mutilation are now commonly talked about and treated. Back then if you did it, you were either a "freak" or people just told you to stop. Great story and meaning, badly portrayed.

    @stacks6969allday people have different issues and handle them differently and self-harming like you said can become an addiction just like drinking and drugs. For people that supposedly want attention and love, they sure work hard to hide the evidence that would "earn' them that. I had to work hard to get my best friend to understand and she sure as hell didn't want a hug or arm around her shoulder. She even decked me in the face a few times when we first met whenever I tried to comfort her.

    @ingeloveswobbly ight im not judgeing aight all im saying is cutting is not the answer whats cutting gonna do? is ur problem gonna be gone after u cut? no it will always be there now there are things you can do to get rid of the pain instead of causeing more of it and the more u cut the more ur body looks ugly the more pain u feel about urself so doing something else is the answer cause every time u cut u just add more pain on for later

  • @stacks6969allday
    @stacks6969allday 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ingeloveswobbly and another thing i have been through alot more shit them most people ive seen my family murderd in front of me when i was 10 years old and i dont fucking cut my self there are alot more things to do to hide the pain and cutting ur self is not the right answer all it does is cause more pain phyisically and the pain mentally never goes away and ur emotions fade away but there is alot more things to do when ur depressed i wanna hear ur problems its not worth cutting urself over

  • @stacks6969allday
    @stacks6969allday 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ingeloveswobbly well everything that i said is scientifically prooved in the human mind when someone does it then there friends come and put an arm arround them well after that they seem to want that attention again and again and they also like the rush that they get they get the release of the pain they have inside but really all there doing is making more pain it dont go away and i aint judgeing noone im stateing facts cutters seek attention to them selfs u might not thing so but its true

    Why do people dislike the acting? Or the whole movie?
    Ofcourse it's not that good as da vinci code or any little bit worse movie, but it's pretty good still. I haven't seen a lot of movies with cutting.. And yeah she could hide her cuts better, and not cut all over her body SO aggressively, 'cause I don't think that someone can cause so much pain for herself.. It's possible, but still. I hope someone understands what i mean.

    My family is like this, but it's both parents. I'm surprised I haven't cut myself. My mom controls me,and my dad babies me and both have different tempers. I am 20 -years-old and inside I feel like a scared and lonely child. Now it's not always my parents' fault, because I chose not to move out yet and not to drive. I let people walk all over me, but I think I might be getting better.

    I just stopped cutting last year and beating myself up early this year (no thanks to my therapist at all, she only made matters worse and I'd just go and hurt myself even more) and I'm proud of myself, because for so long I believed I would never be able to break the cycle and yet here I am today self harm free.
    Anyone can stop hurting themselves, it may take time and some hard work and effot, you will have relapses but eventually if you stick to it you'll get there. YOU CAN STOP IT!!!

    one reason why the movie is quite dramatic may be because in the book this is based on by Steven Levenkron, the girl is not in any way an 'average' or 'standard' type (whatever that is).
    Shes a championship skater, has suffered extensive physical abuse, and when she cuts she completely dissociates. she also has manic episodes. suggesting she also May also have a severe personality disorder.

    Self harm is a coping mechanism, and obviously coping mechanisms do not solve problems. The point of any coping mechanism is to help the person to deal with their emotions. People usually turn to self harm when nothing else works, such as in time of stress. When people are in stress, they may not be thinking clearly. Also, self harm does release endorphins, which is why a lot of people who cut, burn, hit, etc. report feeling high, calm, numb, etc.

They are very helpful they will just sit and listen for hours if you like and everything is extremely CONFIDENTIAL even the stuff you may say about being abused. They won't force you to tell anyone they let you make that decision on your own. Give one of them a try.

    As for the body being ugly; that's a matter of opinion. I have scars on my both, and my boyfriend happens to like them. Some people are able to love people for who they are, even if they may have perfections such as scars, pimples, etc. You may think scars are ugly, but that's not a opinion that is shared by everyone.

    Triggering means, it may cause a negative reaction or "trigger" a memory and feeling. Which means it may bring these memories or feelings back or to you. If someone is watching this movie, and is going through a self-harm addiction, then it may trigger them to relapse.

    @The1foxycougar You're right, it did hurt. But i guess at the moment, I didn't really think about the pain or the consequences of having scars on my arms probably for the rest of my life. I just felt like maybe if I could destroy a little piece of myself, it would make me feel better, I guess.

    @blue1bubbles It's amazing what parents will ignore. I never tried to cover up my cuts or scars and some of them were horrible. I just always had some stupid excuse for how I got them "I cut it on a fence... i fell in the shower..." still my parents had no idea until I was hospitalized.

    The mother - talk about passive aggression. No one should ever dump their frustrations on their kids like that. The way she talked about the dad - so humiliating, especially with him listening. She comes across like those girls from the high school who laughed at the wolf idea.

    @salzwell25 you will get mixed responses from that question I can tell you, it depends what end of the spectrum you talk to, speaking as a victim though yes girls can be worse than that even. But someone who is being that mean won't even realise what they are doing :)
