  • A 1993 Late Show segment on an architecture competition inaugurated by Croydon Council. The competition was meant to result in an improved civic image for the town. I grew up and lived in Croydon/Bromley from the '60's to the '90's, I'd be interested to see if any of this stuff happened. Great running gag with the Alphaville clips tho'.

March 2021 and the same discussion still dominates the residents and workers of Croydon, both formally and informally. Hard to believe we've actually moved forwards in the 28+ years since this late show episode was broadcast.

I left Croydon in 1985 and on my rare trips back, I recognise very little.

"You think of Croydon you sigh rather deeply don't you and think you don't actually want to go there"
to think 25 years later people are still saying this including myself.. it's 2018 now and little to nothing has improved in Croydon since this in 93... at least this was before the trams.

crazy to think that between 1993 and 2003 to 2012 Canary warf went from empty to bursting at the seams all the way back to empty.

Weird to see the town centre pre-trams again and one of the long gone curly wurly ramps in the Whitgift Centre.

Eighteen years on ftom that documentary, I can confirm Croydon's become an aesthetic utopia.

5:05 wow that’s the first time I’ve ever seen that part of Croydon without all the shops closed, now that part is mostly just homeless ppl and crack heads

Yes that's because in 1993 , before internet shopping, retail shops in towns and cities across Britain were likely to be thriving businesses

@DirtyCroydonLove Glad you appreciated it. Liked your blog, but my memories are less romantic... although being a US immigrant for 20 years, the memories are getting slightly more rose tinted. Cheers.

This programme was 25 years ago, but there hasn't been any change in the look of Croydon. It's still awful -- I moved out in 1972

Brilliant, incredibly insightful, thanks for posting.
I was 5 years old when this was made, now my view of Croydon is vastly different from the people in this video. Information on architecture in Croydon seems rather thin which made this video a gem to find, I have been trying to broaden the view with a blog (DirtyCroydonLove.blogspot), I hope you find time to have a quick look. Cheers

Well cladding everything won't improve it. Give it 25 years the old retro 60s builds will be fashionable again.

na, but you do have a point about cladding. the stuffs expensive and some people cheep out

onlythe russians could improve the identity of croydon with a nuclear bomb, riots tried hard to burn the place dow, but sadly most of it still remains
