*You really are a great teacher! I wish more Instructors were like you. One thing that usually happens to me in sparring is that I get jammed as soon as I do a sidekick, when we spar using both kicks and punches (sometimes we only spar with one or the other). What do you suggest I could do, to reduce that from happening? It seems the partner finds a way to just jam straight in as soon as I throw it. Thanks*

Thank you for your kind words MartialArtsMoves. Without seeing your side kick there are 3 things that come to mind:
      1) See if there is a way to make your side kick more efficient. Meaning are there movements that are making the kick take a long time to get moving? For instance try to minimize the chamber so the foot goes from the ground to the target with minimal chambering. You need a little chamber to get power but how little can you get away with.
      2) The side kick has a lot of telegraph to it by nature. Someone who is used to seeing a side kick in sparring will be able to see it coming. So how can you be less predictable in using it? Obviously there is a fake punch right before the kick. But then can you use a half beat? So the fake punch comes and then the kick comes sooner than the normal amount of time that most people would take before the kick is thrown. I don't know if I explained that very well.
      3) Be really good at recovering from a jammed side kick. Practice throwing it jammed up against a heavy bag or wall and shuffle back and immediately defend a punch, tackle, etc.
      4) Use it as a stop-hit. As someone is moving in, especially if they are committing themselves then catch em right in the ribs.
      * Realize that you are working against other JKD guys who are used to seeing it coming. An untrained street thug won't have that awareness so your kicks are more likely to work against them. Iron sharpens iron so your training partners will force you to rise to the next level up which is great!
I might make a video on this... thanks for the great question.

@@BrianCopelandJKD - Thanks so much for the great response. Number 2 is what I need to do. Fake a punch and then throw the kick. I don't use fakes a lot and I think it's to do with being a beginner/intermediate and not practicing enough sparring. I've only done 4 sparring sessions.

@@MartialArtsMoves My pleasure MartialArtsMoves. One more tip on the fake punch... make sure it is believable. If it looks the same as when you actually throw a punch then it will work better.
