Since I got my Analogue Pocket and started watched TH-cam channels like yours opening up the world of Homebrews portable gaming has never been so much fun as it is now. Thank you, Mr RetroBreak.
GB homebrew are great, but the GBA is one of my favorite systems and seeing more homebrews for it is always amazing! Hopefully the GBA (and DS 👀) will get even more great homebrew games in the future! Another great video from RetroBreak! Keep it up!
Mine too!!! I’ll admit….I wasn’t really into the GBA that much a few years ago. I hadn’t even been born when it came out. But then I finally started playing some games…and I became absolutely obsessed with it! Now it’s one of my favorite consoles of all time, only second to the Switch! 😄
Hope you all enjoyed the video! Here’s a collection for all the GBA Homebrew games I've found so far! itch.io/c/1234307/gba-games And here’s the GBA game engine - github.com/GValiente/butano
We are releasing a new homebrew soon, and we have a free demo out now... Our game is called Inky and the Alien Aquarium, curious what you think! If you Google the title our page will come up
Waimanu is a remake of Pengo, so if you can not find Waimanu the best version of Pengo is on the Sega Game Gear all you Retro Fans! Thanks again for the Retro Break!
The DS homebrew scene is really dope. It's a bit different from other homebrew scenes tho because there are no physical releases and most of them work best with a R4/ Flashcart.
@@RetroBreak I think that it has 3 technical reasons. First of all, the DS has proper security. It got broken, yes, but cartridge communication is encrypted. Older consoles didn't use cartrige communication encryption. Cartridges that work with DSi/3DS have to include a decent amount of retail games. That can result in legal issues. Secondly, the DS scene developed in a different way. The DS scene began with roms that were started from slot-2 flashcarts and they always had an SD card. DS homebrew uses DLDI (SD access) to save. They don't write to save chips inside of cartridges. On the other hand, this has the advantage that homebrew can manage files on the SD and there is basically unlimited storage (big DSCraft worlds can be 256MB in size. That's half the size of the biggest official DS games and that's just the file size of one editable world). Thirdly, there has never been a big market for single-cart DS bootleg games. DS flashcarts are very cheap compared to older consoles because they don't need big internal storage. The maximum internal storage of "normal" DS flashcarts was 4MB while normal GBA flashcarts need 32MB of internal storage for most ROMs. That drives the price. Bootleg DS cartridges can be more expensive to produce than flashcarts while they have less features. There are even "bootleg" carts that are flashcarts in disguise because flashcarts are so cheap. Also, writing to the few DS bootlegs that exist never was figured out.
Powder is the first homebrew game I ever played that made me *immediately* go out of my way to pay the dev for (its been free on his website for years & is playable on almost every system you can imagine) That game is back from when roguelike meant *roguelike* & is a must play for people who like Nethack, Rogue, Angband, but want pretty graphics (although there are ASCII options too!) + quality of life features
It’s great! Love that it doesn’t shy away from what makes a classic Rogue game! It’s hardcore, and you can tell the developer really cared about making a good deep game!
Anguna and Powder look like they'd both be super fun. Thanks for covering these. You helped me build a really great DS collection, I like the way you represent games.
This sunday I happened to have more spare time, so I thought I'd check out the news. I still have my Gameboy Advance, and some games, unfortunately I lost a few of them over the years. I still have boxes for some releases. Good to see that it still has some love. Even though I havent spend much time with Nintendo consoles, and I havent played that much handheld games, the Gameboy Advance still is my favourite handheld console, with dozens of great games. The PSP I got a few years later has not made me that interested, despite being much more powerful and modern. Overall I will always remember hours spent with The Sims, Urbz and Harry Potter 3. Surprisingly all of these games soundtrack was made by the same person, Ian Stocker. He is on TH-cam, everyone remembering his tunes can say hello to him! Thank you for doing the review! Im definetly hoping for the completed port of OpenLara coming!
How long do you think it will take for the PSP to start having a development homebrew scene like the GB and GBA enjoy today? I kind of wanna see demakes and original stuff for it. Imagine Hollow Knight and similar squeezed to fit on it
I don't mean to detract but what were those two digimon virtual pet games at 0:03? Also, I'm gonna have to try Apotris and Tremblay Island. Thanks for these videos.
They are Digimon tamagotchi games! I showed them in one of my Homebrew compilation videos… not sure which one though sorry! 😅 - edit. Found it! This should take you to the point in the video! - th-cam.com/video/GwAyeQWEuh8/w-d-xo.html
Yeah I’ve got quite a few of their GB released. And the Homebrew ones on order! Think that would be an interesting video? Maybe compare the Limited Run releases to the originals?
Thanks for video. Either I couldn't catch it or you didn't mention what is that new engine for Butano Fighter. Turned out its called "Butano Engine" in case anyone else wants to check out
How did a physical Powder fly under my radar for this long? I spent so much time with it on GBA and then also a later '3rd party' dreamcast port--that's probably close to 20 years ago now, because at some point I became really old. 🤣 Having a Powder manual is potentially useful.
Video idea: “Out of Print Homebrew games that need rereleases” indie games that developers don’t intend to make physical copies anymore, but perhaps could be rereleased by a larger publisher like incube8??
Maybe, but that might just end up upsetting people if they never get picked up and they can’t buy them anywhere 😭 might be best for me to speak to some publishers and give a few suggestions for ones they could bring back :)
I know Anguna mainly from a cart of compiled homebrews released on the Evercade. Since Mega Cat has 2 Evercade carts I hope Powder makes it to a 3:rd one!
There was a game on kickstarter for gba that i think I was interested in a few years ago. But you backed it for something like £30 and got a code for switch, backed it for £60 and got switch dl code and a gba rom. Backed it for more money and got a physical gba cart. Can't remember the game though. Must have been good though because i remember being tempted.
The fnf GBA port in your itch collection isn't actually GBA homebrew, they just compressed the graphics horribly and repacked it as a fnf mod with a misleading name.
Am getting into ramhack games am glad i got Pokemon Gaia pokemon red rocket edition and crystal clear and goodboy galaxy 😂 juat need boxed for goodboy galaxy and gaia 😂
Since I got my Analogue Pocket and started watched TH-cam channels like yours opening up the world of Homebrews portable gaming has never been so much fun as it is now. Thank you, Mr RetroBreak.
Awesome glad I could help introduce you to some new games for your pocket! Have fun! :D
Same here, but for me it's using Delta with a Backbone controller on iPhone!
Tremblay Island dev here. Thanks for the video 😌
Glad you found the video! Thanks for making a cool game for the system!
GB homebrew are great, but the GBA is one of my favorite systems and seeing more homebrews for it is always amazing! Hopefully the GBA (and DS 👀) will get even more great homebrew games in the future! Another great video from RetroBreak! Keep it up!
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video, as always :) I’m definitely going to be checking out some DS ones soon!

I never knew I was interested in Homebrew gameboy games until I found your videos, but here I am!!
Apotris is the reason I bought a retro handheld, that game is incredible for tetris fans
I'll definitely be checking it out! I love gameboy tetris and more nes tetris!
I love how many modes it has & how effectively it emulates modern tetris features while also just having *tons* of customizability
It’s crazy how many features it’s got! So impressed!
Yessss I love that game 🤓
Best Tetris game ever. Seriously, plays incredibly well, offers a ton of modes and is highly customizable. THE definitive Tetris to play.
I cant begin to tell you how much I love that people are making new Gameboy games
It’s great isn’t it! I keep thinking about making one too, but haven’t got the time 😭
Love your Channel
Loads of handheld games I’ve bought over the years on your recommendation.
Keep’em comin!

Thanks again for the Retro Break!
Thanks, I thought that looked strikingly similar to Pengo...
I'm learning GBA coding at the moment. I wonder how much interest there is in the homebrew scene. Would it sell if it was any good?
Yes please do make some 😊
Aww yeah a new vid to take us into the weekend, have a good Friday homie!
Happy Friday! Have a good weekend! Hope you enjoyed the vid!

I have an Analogue Pocket arriving in a week and have been looking into homebrew stuff so thanks for these videos.
Awesome! Lots to look forward to! Enjoy!
Apotris, not ApoStris :P
It's the best Tetris version I've ever played, seriously. Only thing I miss is the music from the original GB game.
This sunday I happened to have more spare time, so I thought I'd check out the news.

My GBAs have been collecting dust as of late, thanks to this video that might change soon.
My vacuum cleaner has been collecting dust.
My GBA has just been lying there, doing nothing useful.
Haha, both of you, get your GBA’s out and give them some love!!
Very Cool that Fans still Support the GBA. I hope someone ports the NES Game Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers to the GBA so it won’t only be on the NES.

Aw, you didn't have to do that. I'll definitely go watch it though. Thank you!
This is REALLY nice !!!
Now i'm waiting for the completion of OpenLara GBA 🥰
That would be amazing if it got finished and had a physical release! Such an impressive game!
what ... how is this profitable? I'm looking at game design and this simplified hardware restrictions, I think, is good to start developing on.
don't go into it expecting to make a lot of money!
A video on DS homebrew games would be awesome!!
Starting to look into them now! Do you know of any I should check out?
Cool... But... Why in Anguna the grass bush bleeds? '-'
Haha I wondered that too! It’s pretty funny
Have you bought any of the Limited Run Games GameBoy games? I just bought Melon Journey from them myself.
Yeah I’ve got quite a few of their GB released. And the Homebrew ones on order! Think that would be an interesting video? Maybe compare the Limited Run releases to the originals?

Waimanu is just Pengo right?
Yeah basically the same just with improved graphics and some power ups
@@RetroBreak a man of culture I see
Any chance of a top 10/20 of the very best you've played thus far, there are ports of Another World and Lemmings that are very impressive.
I loved the demo of Good Boy Galaxy - I wonder if / when it will get a full release?
It was supposed to be coming out in December last year, but no update yet… I did back it so hopefully when it does arrive I’ll be doing a review!
These were the games that fell behind your games cabinet aren't they 🤣🤣 lol jk another great video as usual!
Haha I’m sure there are some back there! 😅 thanks for watching :)
What're those games with the Digimon logo?
Digimon tamagotchi style games, I showed them here in this video - th-cam.com/video/GwAyeQWEuh8/w-d-xo.html

i need the ds homebrew video!!
does anyone know if powder will get restocked
i like anguna, also released on evercade

I got an RG351P for GBA because of it's 3:2 screen wich is perfect for that system!
I know Anguna mainly from a cart of compiled homebrews released on the Evercade. Since Mega Cat has 2 Evercade carts I hope Powder makes it to a 3:rd one!

Good Boy Galaxy! I backed that one, but no word on when it’s coming yet.. was meant to be December 2022…
8:20 why would they use some horrible song? Thats worse than Rebecca Black. What was that garbage. Actually don't tell me, I don't want to know.
