      @scifigrl23 , where do you see a mandatory -4 deduction? ISU still needs to publish the Technical Handbook for 2024-2025. But the deduction chart does not list what you're referring to: www.usfigureskating.org/system/files/ISU%202623%20SP%20Levels%20and%20GOE%20Season%202024-2025.pdf

    I'm looking forward to struggling with my Salchow in a few weeks when I start FS2. I'm over you, toe loop! Although I suspect we're going to have an on and off relationship for a few years to come...

    The fact that Sasha Cohen was able to land a quad salchow with her more traditional take off tells you how amazing a jumper she was.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      hmmmm, well, that's not a fact. Sasha Cohen actually used the guiding foot technique and did not approach it the traditional way. Still, unfortunately, she struggled with landing even triple Salchows consistently in competition. She trained for the quad and it was reported that she was able to land it in practice and not in competition. What you see here is Sasha in a practice before Skate America in 2001 using the same technique that I describe in my video: th-cam.com/video/Adbq89r-8pw/w-d-xo.html (change the speed to view it in slow motion).

      @ Miki Ando could also land a 4S, however, not always fully rotated.

    Three months late to the video. I'm an adult skater that started skating rather late in life. I started learning the single sal about 18 months ago and had real problems maintaining stability and control with the traditional outside 3 and free foot swinging through technique. Another coach in a group session then showed me the "guiding foot" technique and taught it to enter directly from backward cross overs (I later found out she did it as she found most low level skater had very poor mohawks!). I found the new technique much easier to control. My normal coach then introduced the mohawk entry and then experimented with how much pressure on the ice i placed on the "free foot". It's great that you made this video and showed the alternate technique because back when I learned this technique there was litterally no videos on this sal technique except for ones behind a pay wall. In group classes with different coaches I still find some that poo poo having the free foot on the ice. Now I can show them your video!

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is exactly why I made the video! There are many traditional coaches that say this is not a Salchow, but they are incorrect as it used by the highest level elite skaters! I still prefer to try the more traditional approach first before this one. And with skaters that master the traditional entry, I often show them this one later. That way if they include two Salchows in their program they have more variety to show the judges!

    @queen_of_ravens ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I've been dying to get some clarification on this as I see a lot elite skaters touching the ice with their free foot. I though for a long time that their free foot was just *really close* to the ice, but eventually noticed they were leaving a tracing. 🤯 I was so confused.
    Sadly I don't think I could get away with this alternative technique in a British Ice Skating test.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It could be an issue on a lower-level test - depending on the standards required. For example, if the standards specify that the free foot cannot touch down, this entrance could be an issue. Fortunately, U.S Figure Skating does not specify the position of the free leg. But, there are some judges that still may not recognize it depending on their understanding.

    • @steveherbert9575
      @steveherbert9575 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @I use the traditional method for a salchow from a three turn. I do touch the ice with my free leg slightly when I take off but not been penalised for it. But my competition days used the old system 5.0 etc 😊

  • @nekohuntress99
    @nekohuntress99 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    on inlines we do touch the floor with the "swinging" leg and we totally go to the toe stop in the moment of jumping so it goes from a edge jump to a toe stop jump for sure🤪 obviously some athletes go to the toe stop more than other but we all go to the toe stope more or less we know that lol so the technique is similar but we are allowed to do things that would be considered kinda wrong on the ice, interesting

    •  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Figure skating on ice has pretty strict rules, which can sometimes be a bummer :(

    • @nekohuntress99
      @nekohuntress99 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I wish I could go to the ice but here in Brazil it's not very popular so the closest ice rink in Rio de Janeiro is a bit too far for me to go on regular bases so here basically if you want to do artistic skating your main two options are quad artist skating or taking on the challenge of inline figure skating although putting your hands on an artistic inline frame can be a bit expansive bc you'll have to import one (I have the Jackson Mirage one) but it's worth it if you wanna have the closest to ice experience bc quad artistic skating is a beast if it's own hehehe, but it's kinda cool to join the inline figure skating community bc it's a very new modality so things are still being figured out and not everything is set in stone yet so you have freedom to experiment with techniques a lot and find ways of doing things that work for you, obviously major things including jumps are already pretty much defined but other things are very open to experimentation. But about the Salchow technique I think the reason why we are allowed to do all of these things that would be considered wrong in the ice is bc inline figure skating is pretty hard as it is and it takes way more "muscleling" up to get things around than on the ice, so without some of these "exception" things would be a nightmare.

    My favorite triple salchow is Yuna Kim’s. She goes in with so much speed with the three-turn/double three-turn entry. It’s so fast and pretty…

    @johnmichaelmercado9166 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I do agree with the newer method being somehow better. I've been struggling with my salchow using the traditional method. It's much more "swingy" in a way. With the one using a guiding foot, it made me jump higher and made my sal more consistent. ❤️

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Consistency is the key! I'm glad you found what works best for you!

    THank you! I was pulling my hair out from being taught different methods, like going off the toe pick which the Gus Lussi tapes say is wrong. Also told once to do a complete LBI three turn and take off forward like a waltz which I was told later is wrong, then told to take off and jump without turning at all not even a pivot from the take off foot and go onto a toe pick, but you just cleared up in my head what I think I knew thanks alot

    I want to pass this along to pass my coach, as this sounds interesting, especially since I have a tendency to "spin" my salchow, even with checking as much as possible.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Feel free to share it! However, keep in mind that there are some coaches that prefer the traditional entrance. I had a coach that did not want me to use this entrance for the Salchow because some judges don't understand it. That was many years ago, and things have seemed to change with judges understanding this better now.

    excuse the question, but if you don't mind sharing...how did you hurt your ankle? or is there a video where you have told the story? I've seen you reference the injury in various videos...

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't think there was one video where I explained completely. It was one of those freak things, which is how most injuries occur. I was doing an inside 3 turn and somehow caught the blade and fell the opposite direction that I should have. That dislocated my ankle and the dislocation caused me to break 3 bones.

  • @amandaowens1008
    @amandaowens1008 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder if this will work for me. My issues is I go too deep on the inside edge to take off. Going to try this in practice.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This could help you because it helps with the timing so that you don't wait too long (and get too deep into the edge).

  • @zhangya1991
    @zhangya1991 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    is the right foot(guide foot) inside edge or outside edge?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are on inside edges - think of a backward swizzle

  • @KP-zd3hc
    @KP-zd3hc ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can’t mohawk for my life, so I’m sticking to the three-turn entry. 😂

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can use this method with a 3-turn too!

  • @rushamirul4797

    Finally, i got my answer! I have suggestion : maybe can do with another jump such axel technique i can see a different from kamila valieva leading with 1 hand at the front before snapping ❤

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember that a Salchow requires the take-off on the backward inside edge. It would be difficult to use an Axel take-off technique as that Axel takes off forward on an outside edge.

    • @kam_kc
      @kam_kc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand what you're saying. I have a similar way to do my axle (but worse) because my arms are one in front, one in the back AND straight, so it looks really bad. I consider that to be a problem, but (how I said in my question above) everytime I try to jump with my arms swinging from the back (how you are supposed to) I feel like I can't get myself up.
      Much love!

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep working on it with your coach! You will get there!

    I just have a question I got new skates 1 week ago and I got them sized I have skates on them for about 5 hours the toe box it very tight and pain full so much I have to take them off after 15 min is this normal?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everyone is different - your foot shape could be the reason this is happening, For example, Reidell skates have a tapered toe box and many skaters prefer Jackson Ultima for that reason. It may be possible to have them shaped for better comfort. Check with your professional skate tech,

      You could put foam inside, that's what I do on new boots. It certainly helps when breaking them in 😊

  • @barbarab202

    I'm so confused now. Looking at 3:12, the right foot is down on the ice. Is it supposed to be? I just started working in this with the traditional LFO 3-turn entry and thought my right leg was to come up into the H-shape, leading with heel, and NOT touch the ice.

    •  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is the guided foot technique that I explain here: th-cam.com/video/9YV6i6JZFD0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qaBPc8P3j-4RV_rr&t=327 Your heel is still in front.

    • @mangadud
      @mangadud ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ thanks so nuch for your answer! I do often hear of these freak accidents on ice. Its good to hear your recovery process as I really fear these things. Love your content btw been binge watching your videos last couple of days.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A trimalleolar ankle fracture such as what I experienced is when your ankle breaks in three separate places. Only 7% of all ankle breaks are trimalleolar ankle fractures. While they are rare, and they considered to be among the worst kinds of ankle fractures as surgery is required along with extensive physical therapy. A trimalleolar fracture can have a long-term impact and while I appear fine (most of the time), I am limited in my ability to do certain things like sit spins due to more limited range of motion. I also suffered from nerve damage in the form of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

    Is a side toe hop considered a jump n competition?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a unlisted jump so no points will be awarded for a side toe hop. However, as a transition it could contribute to component scores.

    • @ellenados804
      @ellenados804 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ if only four jumps are allowed is a side toe counted as one jump? Sorry I’m confused I guess.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Typically, no as it is not a listed jump. Things like split jumps, mazurkas, ballet jumps are not counted as jumps as they are unlisted. HOWEVER, at some of the lower levels certain unlisted jumps are required to meet the program requirements. To my knowledge, a side toe hop is no longer a required element in any Compete USA or ISI program requirements. It's best to check with your coach for your specific program and level.
