This is truly fantastic to watch. Not just for the view around old Wakefield and the memories it brings back (I lived on Woolgreaves as a child) but also for the driving standards of the day. I love the car overtaking the truck on the bend by Sandal church but I especially love the car turning right out of George street that stops in the middle of the road causing cars to swerve around it. And we thing drivers today are bad! Lol.
Great to see Wakefield back as I was a child (I was born in 1974) so I still remember the likes of Sandal Motors garage, Tesco and Standbridge lane before Asdale road (and Asda was built). I also worked at the Walnut tree for a while and it was good to see how it's changed over the years.
    Thanks for posting!!

Never been to Wakefield, but it's great to see life in the 70s again :)

If you click the settings button on the bottom right of the youtube screen you can slow it down even more

Brilliant, but a bit too quick for me, I used to drink in the Wakefield pride then walk up to Tiffanys. I remember going down the steps to the toilets across from C & A too.
Miss the brookehouse wmc at busy corner too. Good video, happy memories.

Really good video, great to see how much things have changed, is there any chance of the playbeack being slowed down to real time, having to keep pausing and winding back.
    Great though!!

+Casper C Am I imagining things? I'm sure when we lived in Wakefield (Autumn 72 to Summer 77) Lumb's Dairy had a huge plastic sign depiciting an ice cream cone on the side of their building. And yet there isn't one in my film.
There was a lad called Lumb at my school and although he was nothing to do with the ice cream family, he got a lot fo teasing - mostly along the lines of "your ice-cream's crap". And it was the most insipid ice-cream I've ever tasted - more like frozen milk. The prefects used to serve it along with fruit salad at lunch time sometimes, and one prefect would dish up a ladle of fruit chunks in cloying syrup while the next one would plonk a *wrapped* bar of Lumb's ice-cream into the syrup - so you had to fish out the soggy, slimy block of ice-cream and try to unwrap the purple paper without tearing it.

Goes past my house! (silcoates lane wrenthorpe) and where i work now too (belle vue). Really interesting seeing how everything has changed. Note to wakefield council, they should remodel all the roads to run like this again.

I wish there was a way of slowing down the film. I could easily get Adobe Premiere to show each film frame for several video frames to reduce the speed by 2, 3, 4 etc times, but there's an added problem: the motion is jerky because alternate frames of film are shown for either one or two frames of video (that's how it was telecined, unfortunately) so movement is "big steps and little steps". When I've found a way of correcting this I'll upload a new version. That will be a *slight* improvement.

This is brilliant, everything looks so much better......its been ruined now by people who don't care how things look.

The hint from 'REVRAC74' below makes it more watchable.
Play it in VLC and simply slow the play back speed.

  • @BJJPaulos74
    @BJJPaulos74 11 ปีที่แล้ว

You can slow it down by downloading VLC player, it's free. Then play the video with it, pause it, right click, go to 'playback', then to 'speed', then click on 'slower'. To slow it down further repeat the right click etc and each time you press 'slower' it slows the film down a bit at a time & you can get it to a more watchable pace.

The "modern" (2019) version of this video is now available at th-cam.com/video/-T4OkqOdL8o/w-d-xo.html. The quality is very poor at present: there are nasty compression artifacts. I'm hoping those sort themselves out (as is often the case with new TH-cam uploads) over the next day or so.
Some roads are not open to traffic now. The route into Kirkgate from Barnsley Road / Ings Road has changed. Kirkgate / The Springs is buses only. The section of Kirkgate past the Cathedral was pedestrianised in 1975. Drury Lane / Cliff Lane is one -way in the wrong direction. Northgate / Marsh Lane / Kirkgate has been rerouted. I've described these changes in captions.

The first ever ‘Hyperlapse’ video lol.

I've managed to work out how to make a version that's been slowed down by three times and is also a bit smoother, without the move-move-pause-move-move-pause problem of the original one (this artifact became very noticeable when I slowed down, until I cured it).
    The new video is th-cam.com/video/f3eZB2QNvtM/w-d-xo.html

Sadly there's no chance of getting a proper normal-speed version because my dad originally shot it speeded up, with me sitting behind the camera clicking the cable release about once a second so it's about 20x speeded up. I'm hoping to find a way to at least show each frame multiple times which will slow things down at the expense of making the movement appear jerky. Showing *every* frame n times is easy to do, but the motion is then jerky because of the way it was telecined; what I want to do is the remove every third frame (which is a duplicate of the second frame) and then show each of the remaining frames n times which will remove the current jerkiness (at present I have frames 1,1,2,3,3,4,5,5,6 etc rather than 1,2,3,4,5,6 so if I doubled everything I'd get 1,1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3,3,4,4 etc rather than 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4).
Chris B: Yes I remember Standbridge Lane before the Asda, when Durkar Low Lane was the way from Sandal to the M1 and there was a small colliery building on the sharp right-hand bend near where there were a few rubbish skips in the days before recycling centres. Overtaking outside Sandal Motors looks very hairy - I wouldn't have done it but I don't remember being scared that dad had done. That Granada was a right plonker pulling out of George Street and forcing the Hillman Hunter to swerve round him. The other month I happened to find an old petrol receipt from Sandal Motors that my dad had kept (he'd written something on the back that we'd kept) and back in the 70s a gallon of 5* cost about 35p; good old inflation.

+Mortimer50145 See BJJPaulos's advise below about VLC Player. It works. There's other free software about to edit video perhaps frame by frame in the way you'd like, but it's VERY time consuming whereas VLC is a quick and easy way for everybody to view a lot of the detail. Great video by the way, love it. Well done your dad.

There was some really bad driving in Sandal on the bend just before 'Beckets school by the Datsun driver.

Yes he overtook the lorry on a blind left-hand curve just before Sandal Motors. Mind you, Dad overtook the lorry just after the bus and with the Morris Marina coming towards us: not sure I'd have done that. I hadn't noticed before that a few seconds earlier, as we approach the junction with Walton Lane on the right that there's an old pre-Warboys road sign: a metal red triangle on top of an X cross-roads sign.

Mortimer50145 What utterly amazes me is the absence of any traffic lights or pedestrian light controlled crossings. There's one set on wood street.
I'd guess the same journey today must have somewhere in the region of 50?
