    A real treat of a video Kevin! Nice variety and beautifully shot. Loved your foraging bucket and tennis ball camp chair legs ends. Great idea. Be gentle on those knees.

      Thanks, believe it or not I found that bucket in the woods that day! The tennis balls are almost essential when it’s muddy.

    Was at a festival recently and bought a burlap type bag that had oyster mushroom spores inside from a local mushroom farm. Probably not as rewarding as foraging, but it was fun to watch them grow seemingly overnight. Tasted great in a pasta with white wine sauce.

      That’s really cool! Oysters are good with pasta. I like to dehydrate them first. Then they crisp up when you fry them.

    This is a cool vid! Great shots and all the different topics. The COTW growing up the tree was crazy. 1:38 was that bird really called a northern fucker?😉 Campfire and cook up with the tractor under the shade of the trees, that's the good life there. Cheers for the vid, had been a minute 👍 👌

    We’ve been having a massive drop of hickory nuts. I’ve been snacking on them daily at work. Not as much meat as say a walnut but very delicious

      What kind of hickory? I know the squirrels love them.

    A good mix of late summer/early fall in this one. I've been wanting to learn more about the edibles in my area but with deer season a week away it seems like that's the only edible I've been focusing on. I do like to gnaw on soybeans right before they start to turn and I found a productive patch of paw paws last week! Yummm......

      Deer meat is delicious. I really should get my license again. I have two paw paw trees that are loaded. Sadly I don’t really care for the things all that much.

    I wish I knew more about mushrooms. I’d love to go out foraging for them, I just don’t know much about them. Definitely going to keep my eyes out for that “chicken of the woods”. I’d love to try it.

      Just start with one choice edible. Chicken of the woods is great because there’s really nothing you can confuse it with.

    thanks for the entertaining video. As a previous commenter said, you might try the agawa boreal for cutting some dead wood. Interested to hear your thoughts about it. That thing is clutch because of the blade replacement. Cool to see the pheasant backs in your video. Had a deep fried crown tipped coral recently. Crispiness factor 100000...ofc it didn't taste like a mushroom with all that grease! Just getting into mushroom hunting- any book you'd recommend to learn about these things? I live in Michigan. Cheers

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, they look like good saws. The down side with a frame is you can only cut something that big, or I supposed double that if you flipped it over-which of course is plenty big enough. Coral mushrooms make for a good garnish. As for books, get one that focuses on Michigan. I have one on Pa, but to be honest I rarely use it any more. If you’re serious about it, buy the pay app Picture Mushroom. It costs like $80 a year, but with just two pictures you can identify almost any mushroom with 98% accuracy!

    Just checking back in buddy. How are you getting on? How are the knees feeling? Are you following Doctor's orders at least a little? Hang in there!

      Funny you mention it. I’m sitting on the table at rehab as I type this. Have to do 4 weeks of therapy before my insurance company will cover an MRI. Not sure if I’ll need surgery yet, but yes I am only working half the week right now. Was really hard not to take a walk this weekend. Thanks for caring, Brett.

    I recently found out that I have torn meniscus in both knees from working on concrete over the last decade. I wear Copperfit sleeves on both knees sometimes. Doing yoga can only benefit you as you grow older. Flexibility is what so many lose as we age. You're doing the right thing by eating healthier and living a more active life. Health is true wealth. I recently bought a silky katanaboy 500 as a replacement for if my chainsaw goes down in the field but if you have to use it on hardwood it's a real pain in the ass to cut with especially if you are out shape or don'tuse proper technique. Anything 6-8 inches in diameter is about the limit of what I'm willing to use it for. It was still a good investment. What model of sthil chainsaw is that you were using and is it worth the extra to buy a battery powered model? Stay blessed!

      @KevinsDisobedience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry to hear that. It feels so strange being unstable on my legs. I have tears in both as well, but my left is worse. I also just ordered two good braces. They definitely help. The battery saws are truly amazing! Here’s my thoughts on it: th-cam.com/video/lK62PwAujaI/w-d-xo.html

      @@KevinsDisobedience maybe in the future we'll be able to live longer by growing new organs and such but I believe this will only be available for the super rich. Having the chance to grow old is an opportunity some don't get to experience so I take things in stride. Pain and being uncomfortable tells me I am still alive. It's a trade off. Thank you for taking the time getting back to me. I'll watch the link to your other video. Stay blessed!

    Interesting video. I have never found Hericium species or Laetiporus sp yet down here in Australia, though they are present. Sorry to hear about your injury. Is it Meniscus?. They can be tricky.
    I dont know that living longer will provide humanity with greater insight or solutions regarding the 'Human Condition'. I dont see any real achievements in Humans living longer unless they have a quality of life to match their extended years. Nor does simply being alive during a certain point in history guarantee an individuals understanding, empathy or analysis of that particular time in History. As a Global Society right now, we have never been more divided.
    What I would say is that as Humans, we must adapt or die.....no matter what our challenges are. You are a young man and I am sure you will overcome your injuries. At 60 years old, I am riddled with them. I only had a cortisone shot in my shoulder recently and ever time I swing an axe, I sure feel it the next day.
    I used to enjoy reading Literature and Philosophy in my younger years. I found it ultimately weighed on my spirit rather than lift me. In parting though, let me remind you of Voltaire, whom I am sure you are familiar with....
    "One must cultivate ones own Garden"...
    Both in the physical sense of what we must tend to in the 'Here and Now', and also, in disconnecting to a degree from the broader problems of the world, so as to focus on our own health, happiness and wellbeing.
    Cheers🙂

      They are a bit tricky to find because their shelf life is so short. As to your response, I agree longevity without quality isn’t any better; in fact, I think it’s worse. Seeing people living in nursing homes for ten years longer than they otherwise would seems horrific to me. That said, I think you already see people who are in their 80s that have a lot of life and vitality left. I can’t see how that doesn’t ultimately help correct our myopia as a species. That’s sad to hear that reading was ultimately a net zero for you. I can’t imagine a life without books. Thanks for watching, brother. And good luck finding some shaggy mushrooms.

    Kevin and everyone reading this comment, be careful with the mushrooms!! I really like to collect them, and once I even bought an encyclopedia of mushrooms, I started reading from the chapter "poisoning", after that the list of mushrooms that I touch was literally reduced to 8-10 species + I never eat other people's mushrooms. I advise all fans to pick mushrooms to get acquainted with the list of poisonous mushrooms and signs of poisoning.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Only eat what you know, and definitely learn the poisonous ones. Around here the two most deadly are Destroying Angel and Deadly Gallerina. But no need to be afraid of them. Just learn a little at a time.

    I actually ate a hericium from a big mountain hike and it was the greatest thing in the world haha. Wasn't lions mane though. I wonder if there's much of a difference in how they taste. The time I ate lions mane it wasn't fresh and I was really underwhelmed. I bought it because it was so cheap. I usually don't like buying wild edibles but I had to try it. You got a great haul here. I've never come close to foraging that much.
    Hoping your knee doesn't give you much trouble. I believe you're the kind of guy that would be good at rehabbing it though. There are some benefits to not being able to do much for awhile. You can't be an old wise guy unless you stay seated in a chair. How often is wisdom passed down when someone is jogging? haha great video I don't forage much anymore so I like living through these hunts.

      Bear Tooth I’m told tastes about the same as Lion’s Mane, but I’ve never had any. I’m glad you enjoy coming along on these little trips. I go to Rehab today, so we’ll see how that goes.
