China Built the WORLD'S largest waste to energy Plant in Shanghai

  • China has built the world's largest waste to energy plant, capable of processing over 3 million tons of waste annually and generating 1.5 billion kWh of electricity, without the use of coal. Waste to energy technology is a form of power generation that incinerates solid waste in a specialized boiler and converts the heat into electricity through a steam turbine generator set. The technology originated in the 1970s in developed countries like Europe and the United States. China's waste incineration power generation technology has rapidly developed in recent years, impressing many western countries with advancements from fixed grate incinerators to circulating fluidized bed boilers.
Waste to energy can be divided into two methods: waste incineration power generation and waste landfill power generation. To use waste to generate electricity, various types of waste are collected and sorted. Non-recyclable waste suitable for incineration is shredded and transformed into burning balls, which are then incinerated at high temperatures to produce steam for electricity generation. For non-burnable waste, special fermentation and anaerobic methods are used to produce methane gas, known as biogas, which is burned to generate electricity. Recyclable waste is recycled efficiently.
While waste to energy offers significant benefits in terms of waste management and electricity generation, there are also challenges to consider when promoting it on a large scale. These challenges include ensuring effective waste sorting and collection systems, addressing environmental concerns related to emissions and ash disposal from incineration, managing the costs of waste transportation and treatment, and overcoming public perception and acceptance issues. However, many countries are continuously developing and improving waste to energy technologies as a sustainable solution for waste management.

Not a novelty but great, great news! Waste-to-energy has been proven to be the best municipal, industrial, and hazardous waste management technology for suitable wastes! I have worked in this area for a long time and add my experience and words to the balance, accuracy and fairness of the info provided! High temperature incineration with proper control of the 3 Ts, temperature, retention time and turbulence, easily occupies the top spot among reliable, sustainable, and environmentally sound waste management technologies!

The problem with inceneration of waste to produce electricity is that it pollutes the atmosphere through the release of green house gases.

@@user-xl1ig1bn6iIf it is dispoded on landfills it also produces greenhouse gases. Coz animals feed on plasic and confuse it for food. Dead animals produce greenhouse gasses like methane. Methane is worse than CO2 that is the only gas that escapes via high class inscinerators of course provided they work well. In case of break down they may release some dioxines. But they rarely do.

To get the most out of this kind of technology it should be combined with district heating. This is the reason why only northern EU has used this technology for more than 30 years. It is nothing strange with the technology but I think that it might have reached the level today when it can be profitable without district heating and that is a new step that opens up for expanded use.

Actually in EU there are more inscinerators. But China has more than USA. China and EU are going to build more of them. It's great China will develope this technology. Coz USA is closing a lot of its inscinerators at least those that don't have high technology and will not build more coz it is too costly. Short therm thinking. So what they have big patches of land when plastic causes water contamination. China and EU countries have free health care so it would cost govt to cure citizens
