    Easily the most zen and peaceful video set on all of TH-cam. I have to do this route with my kiddo sometime.

      It was a fun trip for sure. I had a great time!!
      Haha, neither did David Thompson when he was searching for the headwaters in the early 1800's. He thought it was a different river at first, until he paddled to the big bend where it starts to head south.

      Hello Jim. Thanks very much. Yeah it runs through a wetlands, and definitely seemed like a jungle there for a bit. It is a beautiful river, with some very humble beginnings. Appreciate you taking the time to watch, thanks Jim. Enjoy your beer.

    Wow. It is indeed hard to believe that's the mighty Columbia River! By the time it reaches Astoria it's gained some volume. I live along the headwaters of the St. Johns River in Florida and it's 30-40 feet wide in areas. Downstream 300 miles it's nearly 3 miles wide in places...same river! The Columbia definitely has a faster flow rate too. The St. Johns drops just 30 inches in elevation in 300 miles (what they call a lazy river). I like the adventurous style of your videos by the way. Where you're crushing through the brush and poling along with the paddle. Makes the viewer feel like they're out there too. Great stuff.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it starts out very small, much like a creek really. A tiny fraction of the volume that flows into the Pacific. It is a bit of a lazy river for most of this stretch, as it runs through 200 km of wetlands. A river that is 3 miles wide sounds very impressive. Thanks very much for taking the time.

    Another great video Nick. You know they make those Clipper canoes not far from where I live, Abbotsford, B.C. I hear they are very good canoes. I see you experienced smoky conditions as well on your trip, amazing how much smoke there was all over B.C. I will watch part 2 soon.

      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks very much. Yeah I really love my Clipper canoe, I couldn't be happier with it. There was some smoky days out there, but not as bad as it had been a week before I arrived. Got a little lucky. Summer was very short this year, hopefully better next year. Look forward to more videos with your new camera. Thanks, take care.

    was hoping we'd get a new one from you hooray!! Wow this is spectacular, love the smaller river through the community .... lily pads look kinda rough, reeds looked worse/ argh! couple nice campsites// looks like good weather held up but i noticed that smoke coming in on day 2.. everywhere this summer huh...that sure was a good pile of firewood though... Great Video, so beautiful.. thanks for taking us with you

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's a humble beginning for what will become a huge river. I seemed to have taken a wrong turn somewhere, those weeds were definitely not where I wanted to be. But it all turned out ok. The weather was very good, and the smoke was better than I expected. That said, no smoke would have been much better. Yep, I really wish I could have had a campfire, and cooked the food that I intended to cook. Thanks very much, take care.

    What a beautiful place to start Nick ! ya the river looked really low when ya started , and now the reeds and lilly pads that looked pretty tough ! nice camp spot and good thing you brought the twig stove ! really smokey the fires have really been bad this year
    nice day of paddling on to part 2

      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John. Yeah the river is quite low right now, made it very shallow in the beginning stretches. I must have taken a wrong turn, and ended up in the weeds. Thankfully it didn't add too much time. Yeah lots of fires this year, B.C., Montana, California... not good. Appreciate you taking the time John, thanks very much. Nick

      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey it's my pleasure. Yes the Columbia is a very slow river in this section. Interesting to see, and feel it grow in size and volume, but the current stayed slow virtually the whole time.

      Hear, hear. I had a steak, pork chops, potatoes, hamburgers, bacon and eggs, and pancake mix. My whole trip was aimed at open fire cooking, and big meals. My bad for not checking on fire bans. But it was still a very fun trip though. Thanks for watching.

    Hey Nick! I was browsing through your video again (you know, time to be putting on the river again) and wondered that at 20:15 are you giving us a panorama view of a floodplain that you are camping on? I didn't catch this before but with the wood pile debris at the mouth, then looking the stream bed at the washed-out area coming right down to the river,? Spooky! LOL

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is where I camped, it was a bit wet still, but hadn't seen running water for at least a week I'm guessing. In the spring and summer, it would be a much different looking area. I wanted to do a fall canoe trip there, with lower water and more shoreline for camping. That woodpile would have been a good source for a campfire:) Yes spring is here, I was out canoeing last Saturday, and earlier today. Both on sections I have already filmed, but I hope to go again tomorrow and take some video. The weather forecast does not look good, but hopefully. Thanks, take care

    Was wondering if you retired from TH-cam. So glad to see a new video. In planning my own trip along that river I knew there was slow water in places but never expected it to be so choked with weed growth.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a very slow river, surprised me a bit how slow it actually was. I think I took a wrong turn somewhere, there should have been a channel leading to the lake. It is a wetlands, and there are lots of weeds, but I made it a little harder on myself than I had to. Thanks for watching Kal. Take care.

  • @cfraser650
    @cfraser650 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol when you hit those weeds in the beginning I was wondering what you were doing to do didn't look like much fun.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I seem to have taken a wrong turn in there somewhere. But really it wasn't too bad. The whole "weed" ordeal only lasted about 30 minutes. If I would have left all that footage in un-edited, it would have been an R-rated video for sure.

  • @bdh3949
    @bdh3949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I hit weeds like that I usually just put up my paddle, reach forward and grab some weed in each hand and pull my way through lol. Nice job getting down that first leg thanks for the look.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm sure there are a few methods of getting out of those weedy situations. The water was about a foot or so deep, and I was able to move along not too badly for most of it. All in all, it didn't slow me too much. It was around half an hour before I found the lake. Thanks for taking the time to watch.

      @nickharland3795  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah thankfully the smoke wan't too bad, got to see a few mountains. Haha, yeah contrary to what I said in the video, obviously I did make a wrong turn somewhere. Even in low water, there should have been a channel leading to the lake... oh well. Thanks very much Woods, take care.

  • @jefflanham1080
    @jefflanham1080 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand fire bans at certain places at certain times BUT they’re too broad and one should be able to get a special permit or even license with training because I feel that too many times it’s about expressing power over the people!! What’s next, a ban on lightning??

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I hear you... they can be very broad sometimes. I was quite confident that I could have had a small campfire and not burn down the forest, but had to honor the fire ban. Being from out of province, I didn't want to take the risk.
