Thanks for sharing your findings. From videos and forums around, it seems there is no real way to have any solvent that is really not toxic. I'm currently using Sennelier green for oil, but still have to understand if it is really non-toxic. As for the Gamblin solvent free medium, I understand that is basically a fast drying fat medium (oil + alkyd) but I think I read somewhere that alkyd still emits toxic fumes?

I previously got so many comment about fat over lean that I did a video on some alternatives that worked for me. I since stopped using alkyds and the only mediums I use are refined linseed oil and the non-solvent gel. I'm not sure on the fumes. Bet you can do is look at the safety data sheet for any alkyd paint and make a determination for yourself. Where and how you paint plays a large role in this as well.

Have you tried Langridge solvent 75?

I found the spike oil was so strong smelling that it gave me headaches. I had to turn to gamsol which doesn’t have an odor..

thank you for sharing. The next step is to move away from solvents altogether. It is possible, you can do it!

Hello. What would you recommend to use as for the initial thinner foundation layers?

Iuse Zest-It to thin my paint. It is made from orange peels. These orange peels contain aromatic oils.

I would rather spend more time painting then making my own materials.

    What about varnish

I've yet to find a varnish that doesn't have some kind of solvent. I just varnish in a well ventilated room. I use Gamvar.
