Green Sea Turtle: Cleaning Up the Ocean with Art!
chrisbeaven.com/painting/green-sea-turtle/
I’m extremely excited for this next painting. This painting could very well be the beginning of paintings that give me true purpose in my life. So many different things are coming together and I’m finding connections within these animal painting that I find it hard to contain the excitement.
Yesterday Pattie and I went to the Bishop museum here in Hawaii. A wonderful museum all about the natural history of the Hawaiian people. But what really made the visit worth it was when we sat down and talked with Manny at the Parley.tv exhibit. Not only did all three of us connect in our efforts of conservation but Manny also showed us how they have been pulling plastic from the ocean and up-cycling it into useful object.
This is when I picked up a panel the exact same ratio, 1 by 2, that I’ve been working on for months. Everything clicked! I want to paint animals, specifically animals that are endangered and need our help most, and now I can attach yet another conservation aspect to it. I can paint animals, inform others of their plight, share the profit with conservation organization, PLUS, paint on a panel made of up-cycled plastic while removing plastic from the ocean, helping animals in the sea in my backyard AND educate people on how they can get their plastics up-cycled to support the efforts. It’s crazy awesome!
This painting will be featured at the Parley Air Station in Honolulu next to the Bishop Museum. A percentage of the purchase of this painting will go to the conservation efforts by Parley.tv.

The camera was set to take a very long exposure of the night sky so there was nothing left for him to do but wonder around the mountainous landscape and make sure he stays out of site of the camera. It was cold. Wearing shorts was a perfect choice while on the long hike. It was hard work and his body was sufficiently warm along the way. Now it’s a different story. Cold and slightly shivering he...

But, when he had a chance to go there his urge for hiking and experiencing nature brought him to features of the landscape he had no idea existed. The pinnacle of his trip was when he hiked to the top of a small mountain that ended in a cliff surrounded by enormous wall of a majestic volcanic c...

Thank you for your suggestions!! I just started using oils and was quite worried about the toxicity associated with using the medium. So good to know about these alternatives and will give them a shot so that i can have some peace of mind as i paint in my bedroom!

My oil painting teacher has been an artist for over 70 years. She uses cadmiums, lead white and liquin. She's 85 years old with no visible respiratory issues. But, I doubt she's ever eaten her paints nor drank her mediums.

Hey Chris, I've been spending all my money on water-soluble oils because I didn't want to get into solvents. But your oily hair-and-soap analogy is brilliant, thanks...!!! I have been racking my brain how I can use use the less expensive normal oils of which there are also much more colours available, and I think your solvent-free approach will finally make this possible for me. Thank you so much for posting this!!! 🙂🙂🙂

The lead molecule is larger than the opening in your skin so the only way to get into the body is stuff it up your nose or eat it. Cadmium molecules are also quite large in relation to your pores as well. Odorless turps still loads the air with hydrocarbons and is still not good for you. Making it orderless does not reduce the risk.

Hi Chris 👋, I’m researching safe oil painting techniques before I go out and buy a set to try. Can you tell me how you actually paint using the gel medium? Can you paint alla prima with the gel, or do you have to wait days for each layer to dry? How do you clean your brushes as you paint? Do you use a different brush for each core colour? Do you pinch into a rag to clean as you paint? Lastly, how do you deal with the rags when you’ve finished a session? Do you still need to keep oil paint/gel soaked rags in a fireproof bin if you’re not using a solvent? I’m so confused as to the actual full process and safe cleanup process. Thanks for sharing your wonderful work!

You can adhesive felt pads inside the binder clips where the felt touches the paper, and the adhesive glue is against the clip. I usually use this method to hold fragile reference photos where the client doesn't want marks. Also you can stack the felt pads if needed.

A friendly bit of advice: the most common solvent is WATER, followed by alcohols. From your usage, I think when you say "solvents" you mean aromatic petroleum distalates. So the problem is not solvents, the liquids you use to disolve pigments but a subset of them that are bio-active on organic oleolipids (fatty liquids). Soaps? Soaps work by enhancing the solvent properties of organic fats in water. They are solvent enhancers. They increase the solubility of oils in water. Thats why they are in shampoo and dish detergent. But, they also work to dissolve organic fats, like those in your skin, brain and organs which can cause damage to any body parts exposed to them. Too much time washing dishes also makes the skin of your hands dry, brittle, and inflamed - the same as petroleum distilates do. The solution is not in avoiding solvents, both your life and your art depend on careful use of solutions from solvents. Learn what your solvents do and how quickly they do it. Then live your life and your art.

I have not read all comments. But as for the first oil painters, they made their own paints. My suspicion is that the paints did not have what we have in our tubes of paint today. Their ground preparation was rabbit skin glue, oil base ground, lead white covering (this could be toxic) Even Picasso used chalk and oil preparation for his paintings, which I think would demand sizing with RSG.
