You two are absolutely delightful to watch. It seems that the cost of living in Ecuador is about 35% (on average) of the cost of living in the U.S. Your condo is a steal at $1,300. Love the video & appreciate your work. God Bless! - Mel.

Congrats on eliminating alcohol. I did that three years ago for the same reason: it really didn’t fit with my otherwise healthy lifestyle and the more I researched the more I learned how toxic alcohol is to the body. I feared my ability to have fun/relax and my social life would suffer but I still have fun and relax and have no problem being around others who might be drinking. I don’t miss it at all. I’ve saved a lot of money and my overall health and energy level as a result!

@@AmeliaAndJP Awe it's so nice to see my favorite internet couple back on my screen. For future videos why don't you show us what it's like for disabled folks in the nation? When you go to bathrooms in your building or out in public do they have the grab bars on both sides of the toilet? I couldn't see an in your condo. Do they have certain rooms set aside for disabled people that meet their needs? The US disability community did a study that the best sidewalk length for deaf signers to see each other while walking was 14'0" wide. Do any of Ecuador's towns meet that measurement? Do Asians, Muslims or Atheists face more discrimination in Ecuador than other South American nations?
Also you mentioned gay rights in at least one q & a & also met a gay couple in a supermarket (I think in at least 1 of your old videos). What is the nation like for gay travelers? Do they need to look over their shoulders more in this country than others? Do lesbian couples have to fear an increase rape rate in addition to gay bashings? Since women are paid less in most countries still today, would lesbians suffer double sex discrimination with any work pay in Ecuador? Are native born trans folk trying to leave the country for someplace better? Does the health plans cover trans medical needs? You can do deep dives into smaller communities needs/requirements with future videos if you're looking for some video ideas. Keep up the good & entertaining work!

Ridiculously reasonable. The views from your apt are spectacular and for $1300/mo you CANNOT beat that.

you can beat $1300/month in rent in EC consider that minimum wage in EC is $400/month...that same amount for rent would get you a really superb place - i.e. don't get gringoed, by gringos. They chose a real estate agent who, from what I've viewed, is an absolute douche! I hope you do better!

    • @proyectonuevo7487

It seems to me a cheap rent considering everything that the condominium offers, obviously at the level of Ecuador could be considered as expensive, I paid 300 in Guayaquil for an apartment that offered much less than that of you hehe we must consider that the rent of 1300 is very cheap compared to the rent of the United States.. And. You're trying to explain how you can live abroad with the U.S. wage And I think that's fine because with 2300 you couldn't live in the U.S.

    • @frederickmuhlbauer9477

@@frederickmuhlbauer9477 - Of course I was comparing it to rents HERE in the US. Specifically where I live- Chicago. In my neighborhood $1300 gets you a studio apt or a very small 1 bedroom without the spectacular view they have.

I love your videos thank you for sharing your stories with all of us. I moved to US from Ecuador back in 79 as a 14 year old along with my mom and brothers. My dad was already established here so we came to meet him. Now that I am in my 50s and looking at retirement I'm really contemplating moving back to Ecuador with my wife who's Mexican. My mom and dad retired back to Ecuador a few years ago they now live in Quito and each have their own apartment. We're really thinking about moving to Cotacachi, your videos have really sold us on it. We'll see what happens in a few years but I'll keep watching your adventures on viedeo, thank you from Texas USA.

Your apartment is incredibly beautiful with views that are "to die for." I know many people cringed when they heard $1,300 a month for rent in Ecuador. I lived in Key West, Florida before moving to Ecuador and I paid $1,000 a month for a very small studio apartment just off Duval Street. My studio apartment consisted of only two rooms, a very small bathroom and the other room had a bed at one end and a kitchen area at the other end. If your apartment was in Key West I guarantee the rent would be several thousands of dollars a month.

Hi guys. As always, I love your videos. The rent is correct, but compared to the prices in the USA for what you got...is cheap. I'm an Ecuadorian living in NY, and we spend in groceries every 15 days what you spend there in a month. Reason why, because I miss products from Ecuador and that is expensive. I think the same thing happened to you. Enjoy it because live is short and that's what we work for. Love you guys. Buena suerte en todo!!!

Amelia and JP this was another great video. It is really great to be able to see your actual expenses and then each of us can start to figure out how much we can save or not in each area where you/we spend money. The budget seems a lot for food but understandable given your explanations. Rent seems cheap to me for such a luxurious place but of course I have no idea about rents in other Ecuador cities. I am looking forward to your ‘apartments video’. Hopefully it will be soon. Thank you both :)

So I see most comments are about your apartment: It's unanimous that the place has breathtaking views and envy-inducing amenities. Whether it's too much or too little depends more on what your income is than how it compares to New York, Chicago or L.A. It was fun for me to compare my cost of living from my Ecuador summers of 2012-14. At that time it was about half of what yours is today, but then I was only "half a couple" ;-)

Thanks for sharing your budget, it's always interesting to see how they can vary from city to city. Your Manta home is lovely! The views are like a slice of heaven! You're so right about prices of apartments comparatively speaking. Apartments are so expensive in most areas of the states.
When I began teaching in eastern MT six years ago, I thought I'd go to my college town of Missoula for retirement. Now, I simply can't afford to live the way I wish there. My 41 year old daughter was guilt tripping me about my plan to move abroad for retirement after one more school year. She said I wanted to live in opulence (hahahaha!) instead of just trying to get by and live close enough for her so she can watch out for me as I get old. She and her fiancé live 58 miles from Chicago and so for curiosity's sake I looked at prices of apartments in her town and most two bedroom, nothing special apartments are more than what you are paying. So, good for you!
We must all live life to the fullest as long as we can!

OK, I'm going to say it. That is a LOT of money for rent!! But hey, you enjoy your life! You can always pay less somewhere else next year. Keep up with the videos!!

WOW - that's not a bad rental fee, for beach view and modern construction ! In comparison, many beach view condos in Costa Rica are renting for close to $2,000/month.

Good investment on spending money on yourself and your health. It will be a big payoff. Enjoyed your video. For $1300 a month sounds like a deal compared to my area and don't have to look at the stuff and you are saving money on transportation.

You Guys Are An Inspiration! The $1,300 / month is a bargain. You’re living a lifestyle most would dream of here ( In the US ). As always Thanks For Sharing Your Journey

JP, you don't need to get paid for cutting Amelia's hair. The payment is you get to live with Amelia ! 😍

I was in the US for a month, came back to Cuenca and was ASTONISHED that the prices have gone up in some instances 30%.

We know a lot of people in Cuenca, but none have mentioned substantial price increases. We’ve heard rents have come down as the supply has increased.

Amelia, your hair looks so nice! Love it! You are making me want to go natural . . . I'm coming to Manta for the month of August - getting tired of the rain and grey skies of Cuenca.

Wow. The rental surprised me. After seeing your “Manta rentals” video from just before your move, I expected something in the $700-900 range. We’re in El Oriente, moving next month from our initial house rental, at $500, to another, in a more “touristy” area, for a whopping … $100/month.

Thank you for all the information you shared. One of your products, the Buckwheat has a Kansas City connection as the owner spent a year there as an exchange student back in the 90's and his company name, Cusi means friend in Quicha the native language of the Andes. I smiled as I imagined your arms full of a variety of products from the Mall del Pacifico and how it has become a nice place for gringos and others during the few years it has been in existence. I will be near the Microcenter in Overland Park next month and in Ecuador in November so if there is something small you need me to bring, let me know please. Hugs for both of you.

Great Condo and building, and I think it’s a good price for luxury living. Definitely lower rent available in simpler accommodations.

I had a lot of fun watching yor video, you guys are amazing!!! When you indulge yourself with treats you definitely will have to pay a high bill at Megamaxi, (it happens to me quite often) but when you deserve it you shouldn’t have any worries. 😉. I’m very pleased you are living in such a beautiful city. I live in Quito but love to travel to Manta to visit my sister. Enjoy a lot!!

I love your apartment; the price for that view alone is a bargain!!! In your upcoming videos I hope you get a chance to show other reasonable-cost apartments like yours, with any variety of similar beach view (it would be further inspiring, and also confirm that kind of living opportunity is for real and not a lucky fluke! :).
