ECUADOR COST OF LIVING (for 2 American Expats)

  • This is our annual cost of living update for Olón Ecuador. We kept track of every expense we incurred in September and compiled them into this video and a REALLY long blog post here: liveabroadnow....
    We live a VERY comfortable middle class life on less than $2,000/month in a small rural beach town on the coast of Ecuador. Our cost of living in Olón Ecuador is nearly identical to our cost of living in Cuenca Ecuador last year, which you can watch here: • Cuenca Ecuador Expat C...
    We haven't noticed any major price increases or inflation in Ecuador before, during or following the quarantine in 2020. Some of our expenses went up while others went down, which we explain in detail in our blog post.

    I have a farm and a ranch here in Ecuador. Rural living in Ecuador is even less expensive. Our expenses for a family of 4 are less than $150 a month. Property taxes are almost nothing and we get to live in one of the most biodiverse and beautiful places on the planet. Intag! After more than 20 years living in Ecuador, I can't imagine ever going back to the states to live.

  • @johnnypunish

    It makes NO CENTS for Americans to retire in the USA. There are 1000 places around the world where it's less expensive to retire and raise one's standard of living. To be HONEST, the biggest obstacle is "fear". Most Americans have lots of fear of living outside the USA. I happen to live in Mexico for the last 22 years and LOVE IT! But sadly, I hear the "fear" all the time. I actually gave up telling Americans NOT to fear. I mean, 95% of it is NOT based in reality but the news in the USA is so bad, so awful that "fear" is real to those living in that culture. And so, yes, it's an obstacle. But for those who can riggle themselves free from that web of non-sense, the world opens up and, wow.....what a world! For me, I am debt free, no mortgage, no rent, and virtually no utilities....I have solar power and I recycle grey and black waters. I grow my own food and l have a bunch of chickens. Talk about relative freedom in an un-free world. It's paradise. But that's me. For others, their paradise will be different. But it's all out there for those who take the step and tell Fear to take a hike.

    • @knockknock1246
      @knockknock1246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Juuk I knew a condo owner in Asia who rented to me and was infuriated at the renegotiation I did for a second lease after there for a year ... Contracts. I found out what he paid for the place and understood his anxiety. He told me he put his purchase in the place as a situation of "Live and learn".. I expressed to him what I was offering for another two years was more than fair for the area and other situations... And I told him since I was a good tenant he'd almost certainly give me my entire deposit back...I got the better lease price, I got deposit back (almost unheard of in Asia)... and the place looked as good or better than when it was leased to me when I left. But since he could afford the place here he was a real estate genius...???
      I did leave some nice things there... small things... But from what I've heard people are offering 60 % what I paid now. Covid.
      Sometimes cutting your losses means what it means... When you haven't a place filled your averages can get crushed. Common sense you would think... Ruins ENTIRE economies of a country with this lack of understanding sometimes.
      As for the Covid issue...I believe people should analyze who bought and sold large amounts of properties before the..it happened... Those economies were pump and dumped.... And "savvy business people" are still demanding at least what they paid for what they bought... Or what expectations there were for renting places prior to overbuilding. It was felt by these"savvy" people ... Newcomers or present renters will want newer places so to heck with established owners as for their having lower rents due to supply and demand.. New homes, etc. When established owners saw this they sold these same "savvy" people discounted places that are now (rather should be) way discounted... And the clock ticks on their having to sell some of those places at huge losses just to maintain their other properties... Dominoes. Many places like this have incentives for VISA that include purchases of property. How angry do you think this will make people having to suffer... Living in those communities? They likely don't know... Lies... Promises aren't kept... Sad stories if starving beginning from arrogance and trust.

    I think it's amazing that you guys find living in Ecuador nice and affordable. I am Ecuadorian, and my parents are now retired in Ballenita, where life is indeed different than in Guayaquil. There is an increasing number of people from the US/Canada who find the coasts of Ecuador the perfect place to retire and that is just awesome. I would only advise you to get more informed about the IESS situation right now, because it's not great. So I don't know how much of a good idea would it be to start contributing to the public health system, specially if you need spine surgery, in which case, I would really recommend you to go to the US. I wouldn't risk it. There is a huge corruption problem going on internally, and even retired people's pensions are being threatened. Anyways, I know you're situation is all different and I for sure wish you have the best of times, but please, if you're living in Ecuador, try to get more involved in what's currently happening in the country so that you don't have problems in the future. And also, it is a nice way to show that you care about the country that's welcoming you, and you're not staying in a bubble of privilege. I mean this in the best way. Thank you so much for your videos and enjoy Ecuador !!

    RENT in different countries is relative. In Costa Rica, you can rent an airconditioned apartment in a medium sized city for around $400./month, including internet connection. You can also rent small houses for around $600./month in the same city. As usual, beach locations are more expensive - as are big city rentals. DO NOT BUY a home or condo in Costa Rica ! Real estate purchase prices are JUST AS HIGH as the USA, if not MORE - and the construction quality is substandard.

I like when you two figure out the coffee on camera. Very cute couple. My health care is 15 usd per quarter, but I go to Ear Specialist ($100 per year) and a private hospital ($5 per visit) Hahaha- Wine Budget!! We get local produced for $4 bottle- but I am so jealous!! Oh, on another subject, have seen commentary on another channel that expats drive up the cost of everything, especially housing, wherever they go, and may displace local populations. While this isn't a pleasant topic, it is relevant to people like myself who have a need to find a lower cost of living, but don't want to cause problems for others or find themselves being priced out of an area as others flock there to live.

    I grew up in Denver area (Westminster and Englewood) in the 60's and 70's. Graduated from Englewood High School in '73, and then went to Mines in Golden. My dad bought a 1900 sq.ft. home in Westminster in '67 for $19,000. It was a Hutchinson home, and those same homes now go for around $350,000 to $400,000. I live in a very nice neighborhood in Marana, AZ (15 miles NW of downtown Tucson) in a 2408 sq.ft. 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home with 2 car attached garage and six mature mesquite trees out front which I purchased in 1996 for $141,900. Our payments are around $900/month. Denver is insanely expensive. And while it was a nice affordable place to grow up in, it no longer is, unfortunately. Even Tucson now is getting more pricey, with all the outflow from California. But it's nowhere close to Colorado.

    Don't know if anyone explained about the propane tanks. At higher altitudes you unable to get the same volume of gas than you can at sea level. Hence why planes are pressurized to keep air molecules closer together so we can breathe. Also temperature is a factor. The colder you are the more volume of gas you can get into a tank, but we are talking like Russia cold to notice the big difference. Temperature and pressure affects all gases

    Another factor with propane, all of you appliances run off the propane vapours produced in the tank. The warmer the ambient temperature is, the more vapours the propane produces inside the tank. So when its warm, propane lasts longer because the liquid will produce more vapours in the tank, the colder the temperature, less vapours will be produced by the liquid, meaning you will go through more propane.

      By world averages, $49 is very high. I have unmetered 330mb/sec fiber directly to my router for less than $8 and can get 800MB/sec for $4 more. Or add 178 channels of TV for $1.78 but no one I know of watches TV since there is so much to do instead of wasting life on a sofa watching TV. Americans are so used to gouging prices that they accept it as the norm. Debt is normal in the US but not in the rest of the world. How come cell phone service costs 10 times higher in the US? The service is not better, it is often worse? Because people do not travel much to see what is really going on everywhere else. I am shocked once again every time I go back to California and how people even with good salaries are in deep debt and have no savings.
